In 2006, nearly 32,000 New Yorkers were busted for possessing marijuana -- 87 percent of whom were either black or Hispanic, despite equal drug use among blacks and whites.

Here are photos of one of those arrests. Eight cops, both plainclothes and in uniform, are making this arrest on Gay St. in the West Village. Is this the best use of police officers' time? Will this have an impact on marijuana use in the city? Is this how we want our tax-dollars spent?

at the scene of this "crime". One of the things that we "civilians" (term used by both police and politicians these days apparently because we are already under martial law and they aren't "civilians" anymore) should encourage is cameras (filming the police stops and activity--- not CCTV, Redlight Cameras, etc) and many cops on the scene. The worst situation this "criminal" could imagine is a normal unit (or worse yet an individual) NYPD cop team arresting him. That would often result in the taking of his money/drugs and a beating, and then a "10-26" back to dispatch. Or worse if he had enough money/drugs on his person he would find himself dead with a cheap .25 automatic (no prints) found by his hand......

All force is excessive

In 2003 in San Francisco I was arrested for "dealing" marijuana and psilocybin (mushrooms). Just looking at me, anyone can see I'm a harmless little old hippie woman. I discovered later that they had staked out my apartment for a week and seen nothing. I was in a "good neighbourhood". When they arrived, they battered down my door, came in running, with guns pointed straight at me, shouting. I was sitting in a chair, in plain sight.
There were a dozen police, all armed, all really big. Some more showed up later. In my cozy, friendly apartment, decorated with framed vintage posters, antiques and stuffed animals, I was immediately handcuffed while they started to tear the place apart. It slowly became apparent they were looking for guns. They may as well have been looking for WMD; and their "intelligence" was just as bad as Bush's. Some readers may be familiar with the "false outrage" act that bully-boy officials enjoy -- with knitted brows, bugged-out eyes and slack jaw they profess shock and disbelief at the turpitude of the crimes they pretend you have committed. They were shouting back and forth at each other down the hall, and walkie-talkies beeped and honked. The place was an uproar.
I didn't especially want to be arrested, but if they had had one officer knock on the door and demand to see my merchandise, he could have had it, and that would have been that. My conclusion about it all was that they love the drama, and they love the bullying, and they will turn any situation into a taped-off, flashing-lights crime scene. I believe that most "crime scenes" are entirely the result of hopped-up, adrenalin-fueled cops who make an innocent situation bad, and a bad one worse.
We do not have an excess of crime, just an excess of law enforcement.

Why don't we just legalize the stuff...

...that would solve a lot of problems such as prison overcrowding, drug smuggling, police harassment, court clogging, and a raft of family problems. Treat it like alcohol, no driving, etc. Let our cops get on to more important things. A lot of cops are social bullies to begin with, and this is just one of hundreds of similar icidents that happen every day in every state in America...

I'm surprised the cops didn't just shoot the crap out of this pair, national security?
