Iraqi Mother Killed for Protesting Honor Killings

Posted by Melissa McEwan, Shakesville at 4:33 PM on June 2, 2008.

The mother an honor killing victim is killed herself after leaving her husband.

Those were the fateful words of Leila Hussein, an Iraqi woman who was killed after telling her family's story to The Observer, after her husband and sons murdered their 17-year-old daughter/sister for striking up a friendship with a British soldier—a murder to which her husband confessed, but for which he has faced no charges and has been congratulated by police.

It was two weeks after Rand's death on 16 March that a grief-stricken Leila, unable to bear living under the same roof as her husband, found the strength to leave him. She had been beaten and had had her arm broken. It was a courageous move. Few women in Iraq would contemplate such a step.

...Leila turned to the only place she could, a small organisation in Basra campaigning for the rights of women and against 'honour' killings. Almost immediately she began receiving threats - notes calling her a 'prostitute' and saying she deserved to die like her daughter.

...[S]he was staying at the house of 'Mariam', one of the women's rights campaigners, whose identity The Observer has agreed not to reveal. On the morning of 17 May, they were joined by another volunteer worker and set off to meet 'a contact' who was to help Leila travel to Amman, where she would be taken in by an Iraqi family.

'Leila was anxious, but she was also happy at having the chance to leave Iraq,' said Mariam. 'Since the death of her daughter, her own life was at serious risk. And this was a great opportunity for her to leave the country and to fight for Iraqi women's rights.'

...Mariam said that when she awoke Leila had already prepared breakfast, cleaned her house and even baked a date cake as a thank-you for the help she had been given. After the arrival of 'Faisal', the volunteer (whose identity is also being protected), the three left the house at 10.30am and started walking to the end of the street to get a taxi. They had walked less than 50 metres when they heard a car drive up fast and then gunshots rang out. The attack, said by witnesses to have been carried out by three men, was over in minutes. Leila was hit by three bullets.

She died at the hospital, where Mariam, being treated for a gunshot wound to her arm, overheard "people talking on the corridors and the only thing that they had to say was that Leila was wrong for defending her daughter's mistakes and that her death was God's punishment."

President Bush reportedly admonished his generals that they "must be tougher than hell" in Iraq. And so they must, because we have unleashed hell there.

...freedom and democracy in Iraq in the next 5, 10, 50 or 1000 years with atrocious religious traditions like this going on? And just think – if the U.S. and U.K. weren’t there in the first place, mother and daughter would probably be alive and well today. Sad, huh?

Add another two the list murdered by Bush and Blair.

If I were the British soldier involved, I probably wouldn't be able to live with myself after this.

When I read the first story about the daughter I was so disgusted. Reading the second story about the mother really brought home the fact that this kind of thing is no aberration; it's an integral part of the 'culture'. It truly sickens me.

Where to Draw the Lines

This article points out yet again that the real conflict isn't Muslims vs Christians and Jews, but between violent, intolerant, textual literalist fundamentalists and nonviolent, tolerant, rational people of all faiths or no faith at all.

Bush is correct that it's a struggle of good against evil, but the lines are drawn very differently; he places himself on the wrong side.

I hate this war too, but we can't blame it for honor killings.

I had a misguided Republican say to me "why don't you stop hating Bush and starting hating Bin Laden." I replied "I'm a multitasker, I can hate them both."

Similarly, we can hate this war without becoming apologists for Islamic reactionism or misogyny.

One of the many things in question about the cult in Texas is the manner in which birth and death records are kept. The judge had DNA samples collected from all the children taken from the compound. Jessup's was taken in the jail. Now they can track the children and how they tie in with him. It's a start. They may not have 'honor killings' but they've got something going on that I'm sure we'll be shocked at and ashamed of. Thanks, ANNA

Be ashmed you people of Islam! You have dishonored the name of Muhammed and Islam by these "honor" killings. The men of Islam who are the perpetrators of this evil should be stoned to death!

About REAL MEN

Many of my friends and me see this as a bunch of frightened, controlling punks who need to be brought over here and feel the way in which we real American men would show them what we think of and would do to them.

These little punks don't have the balls to allow a woman to be accepted as an equal.
In fact, many of those women are undoubtedly more than equal to the little punks.
Leila certainly was.
She was courageous and knew the dangers she faced in doing the right thing.

It is with sincerity that I say that these little cowards need to be brought in front of us.
They are bullies and, there is one and ONLY one way to deal with bullies if they are to be stopped.
These punks are destroying many aspects of what most of these women are.
Although I don't know any of them personally, from my experience with those women who I have known, I do know that almost all of them are intelligent and decent human beings, at least equal to my gender.
I can't be any different there.

it is not as if there are any women or children abused or murdered by their "loved ones" in this country after all. Before the womens rights movement in this country police also turned a blind eye to physical abuse here. All stories like this do is give bigots another reason to hate and condemn a whole culture they know nothing about.

Bringing 'democracy' to Iraq

In the US declared attempts to bring democracy to Iraq, we are ignoring the most democratic process....HUMAN RIGHTS....
We are not teaching it; we are not making them legislate for it; we are ignoring the human rights atrocities in Iraq, we are not discussing it.

we have paid 'special forces' to kill and maim whomever, and they appear to be after the wrong WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION....
The MEN who believe in and carry out this murdering of women and other such archaic practices are, indeed, the Weapons of Mass Destruction .....
Why don't we get on the human rights band wagon and free and protect the women from these horrors?
We are imprisoning the wrong 'suspects' in our torture camps....
ADMITTED WOMEN KILLERS SHOULD BE APPREHENDED IMMEDIATELY ....and handled appropriately.
KILL THE BASTARDS.....

maybe that will get the attention of these Neanderthals.

Political obfuscation

We have had honor killings here in the US on a mass scale for three decades. We also have honor poverty, honor education and we even have honor healthcare. It would appear that this is the perfect medium for rhetoric and patriotic hysteria. It is certainly a good job this forum simply acts as a controlled political bellweather. Lets see what the natives have cooking today, yep mass indoctrination. Some of you must read the bundespost from the 30's, we seem to be having a rerun of the same crap.

Just a caveat regarding honour killings

Having left for Europe and then Canada at a pre-teen age, has nevertheless given me a glimpse into our Middle Eastern culture. Regarding honour killing, I am glad to see that it has become an issue and it will be an anachronism in not too distant a future, and good riddance, too. However, having said this, I would not like to see our culture replaced by the Western culture where anything goes and people are kept excessively preoccupied with sex under the pretext of individual freedom. I find what is happening in the West is geared to marketing, consumerism and diversion of attention from real issues so the status quo, the corporate plutocracy, can continue. Somehow I don't think the poverty and fake democracy that corporate capitalism brings about is any better, in fact, I think a lot more atrocities and mass oppression ensues from imposing American New World Order than the cases of honour killings we now have. Consequently while honour killings deserves to be condemned, one should be careful not to throw out the baby with the bath water.
