I Still Hate Chris Matthews! MSNBC Moron Says "No One's Surprised" Obama's Good at Basketball

Posted by Melissa McEwan, Shakesville at 12:06 PM on April 1, 2008.

Chris "Paleface" Matthews discusses the very, very newsworthy and important fact that Obama isn't a fantabulous bowler.

Chris "Paleface" Matthews, on yesterday's Hardball, discussing with Howard Fineman and Michelle Bernard the very, very newsworthy and important fact that presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama isn't a fantabulous bowler (about which Spudsy posted yesterday):

FINEMAN: … He definitely needs some bowling lessons. He should do what we used to do in Pittsburgh, which is all-night bowling for a dollar, you know, really work on your game. I think he did get [former Pittsburgh Steelers football players] Franco Harris and he did get Jerome Bettis, the Bus, to endorse him. And he's traveling around on the bus with the Bus. But if you can't do something like that, you shouldn't do it. He should have stuck to shooting hoops—

MATTHEWS: Yeah, I know.

FINEMAN: —which he's very, very good at, by the way, and which translates racially, too, especially during the NCAA basketball tournament. Don't do something you've never tried before in front of a national television audience, OK?

MATTHEWS: You know, Michelle—and this gets very ethnic, but the fact that he's good at basketball doesn't surprise anybody, but the fact that he's that terrible at bowling does make you wonder—

FINEMAN: That doesn't surprise anybody either.

BERNARD: Well, it certainly doesn't surprise anybody black, I can tell you that.
…MATTHEWS: [Watching video.] This is a killer. Look at this killer. Because it isn't the most macho form there, I must say, but who knows?

But how does he smell, Chris? HOW DOES HE SMELL???!!!

Digg!

Is it true that Chris Matthews is secret spawn of Andy Rooney or did they both get tragically stupid by drinking from the same lead pipe water system?

Who'd a thunk it?

Tweezer's claim to "fame" is an unending series of outlandish statements.

I simply can't understand why anyone with an IQ in excess of their shoe-size would waste their time watching him--Alternet is included.

Implying that all black men and therefore Barack Obama as well are good at basketball is no big deal and not racist.

It's a stereotype, perhaps a prejudice, perhaps a dumb thing to say, but its not racist.

You guys are too serious.

I always figured I could take Obama in basketball, and this new rumor that he is good makes me think twice. No, I still believe I could run circles around the Senator on the court.

I also think he is a better candidate for President than anyone left in the field, so I will campaign for him and vote for him in November.

Chill out....post Bill O'Reilly's comment last night

this is nothing to attack chris matthews over. so what. the guy is so giddy with "politics" that he's virtually harmless. the real problem is that all he and the rest of the cable "news" people talk about is electoral politics. matthews gets such a kick out of it--if i have to watch those shows i like him the best.

why not post what Bill O'Reilly said last night? talking about a "hunky jesus" contest in San Fran, O'Reilly was listening to Dennis Miller preach insulting tolerance and indifference when dealing with "these homosexual morons" when O'Reilly said, out of hte blue, "now, wouldn't you just like to see it? wouldn't you just like to see them all turn to pillars of salt?"

that's INSANE. and we're talking about Chris Matthews?

I'm even forgetting the names of those other anchors: Brian Smith?

Matthews Statements Were Irrefutably Tame and Tempered Racism
Posted by: felixcommi on Apr 1, 2008 1:59 PM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
To impute that an indvidual possesses any assumed characteristics because of their race, is necessarily racist. It is to insinuate that human diversity has fenced parameters, whereby insular groups exist with set characteristics.

Black people who play basketball may be good at it, and certainly those who never play will never be especially talented.

The problem is in making totalizing remarks. It reinforces racial divides by reinforcing the notion of innate universally-shared characteristics for racial groups.

The imputation of greater athletic competence has an interesting racist history. Much like the "large penis" generalization which has been used to differentiate whites and blacks since the late 18th century, the animalistic athletically phenomenal black has been analogously racist in its application, as the "Sudanese donkey penis" documented by white racist scientists in the late 18th century.

Matthew's remarks reinforce and strengthen and uphold racist ideology, which shirks the undeniable truth that all there is in the human family is diversity within and between "races" on every matter.

Chris Matthews politics
Posted by: Ocean tides on Apr 1, 2008 2:12 PM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I watched Hardball last night and did not see a major faux pas in his statement about Obama's ability to play basketball. Careless, maybe but not malicious.

What I do get concerned about are Matthew's politics. While sounding very Democratic and moderate to liberal at times in his views, I do get the feeling that when the rubber meets the road close to November, we are going to hear a lot of accolades about John McCain and more about the "Daddy" party (repubs) versus the "Mommy" party (dems).

It sounds to me like in his past statements Matthews seems to admire the law and order aspect of the Republican party, he might have even said that Republicans are more in the follow the leader mode while the implication is that the Dems are more chaotic tempermentally. But then the proud, liberal Democrat that I am subscribes to the belief there is an inherent order in chaos, hidden as it might be.

I want to trust that Matthews is going to critically examine the consequences of this Republican administration and then wholeheartedly support either Hillary or Barack against McCain.

I hope I'm not wrong here.

Having Played Hoops With Barack

I just want to say, he's "ok," not "very good." The man, being skinny, has sharp elbows and a predictable spin move. His jump shot's just ok. He ain't gonna be the first picked on the playground. (Sorry, Barack).

Disclosure: As a fellow Hyde Parker and Henry Crown player, I am in Barack's corner.

Now, how good do we think Chris Matthews really is at bowling?

Tweetie has to be one of the most vapid morons on television. Among many such, I hasten to add. He is a complete waste of air time, with his endless "in depth analysis" (?) of the utterly inconsequential. One idiotic remark follows another until nausea sets in and you turn it off or go to the cooking channel for something that makes sense and has some reason for taking up air time.

Ignorant slip of the tongue. I am not a fan of Matthews but I do watch his show, sometimes have to hold my nose. He is not the best that is for sure, but not the worst either. I think after so many years in politics he has become unbearably cynical. Often when these guys are on tv, at times literally holding other people's lives and reputations in their hands, they get really fat heads.

Wonder why Hillary isn't replying to his invite for his 'Hardball college tour'? Obama on Hardball today.
