John Mayer's Rape Joke

Posted by Melissa McEwan, Shakesville at 7:26 AM on October 15, 2009.

That John Mayer is a asshole is not news. Still, it takes a special kind of asshole to give an interview that warrants the title: "John Mayer Threatens to Sodomize Us."

That John Mayer is a huge asshole is not news. Still, it takes a special kind of huge asshole to give an interview that warrants the title: "John Mayer Threatens to Sodomize Us." Which he actually does. Because he doesn't like the reporter's questions, and complains about it through the entire interview, culminating in this exchange:

What concept [will your next record have]?
More political things, worldly things.

Such as?
Nothing rhymed with public option.

You don't always have to rhyme, though.
I'm going to forcefully sodomize your editor.

Charming. Almost as charming as

New York

publishing the interview, which is nothing but a stream of insults against their reporter, no less under the aforementioned headline, turning Mayer's rape joke into the centerpiece of the interview.

That dumbass editor should be forcefully sodomized he is an asshole for coming up with such dumbass questions. Mayer is a guitar player the questions should have been about music

Jeez, lighten up Melissa and Alternet. It was a joke. This is why the left (to which I whole-heartedly belong) has the reputation of being overly-sensitive crybabies. Wah-wah-wah, John Mayer's joking about rape. Oh, shut up. Was it distasteful? Maybe, but so what? Not everything has to be wholesome, PC and "nice." Let's try and hold our righteous indignation for something that really matters; there's plenty to be angry at in this world without getting upset about a one-off comment in an obscure interview by a blues/rock guitarist.

Sheesh.

Mayer was pretty clear that he was disgusted by how lame the interviewer's questions were, and that the questions were put in their mouth by an editor with no real grasp of what qualifies as a good interview.

If you're going to ask the guy about politics in his music, I suppose you could ask why his song, "Waiting on the world to change" is limp claptrap that encourages people to sit around and let change just.. happen.

The guy is just being an asshole. Had I been the interviewer - I'd have cut it short at the first answer that came out as "I'm a big-star-asshole, and I don't need to answer your questions". Which was answer number 2.

I guess if you're a music star, you fail to have opinions on anything but music, and that gives you free license to repeatedly insult your interviewer. *rolls eyes*.

Like any star that treats other people with such disdain and lack of respect - I will probably not be buying any of his music from now on.
