McCain's Buddy Brokaw's Unfair Debate Performance

Posted by Melissa McEwan, Shakesville at 8:01 AM on October 8, 2008.

I gave Brokaw the benefit of the doubt that he wouldn't let his bias show. Well, that was silly of me.

So, I went into last night's debate knowing that John McCain and Tom Brokaw are personal friends--Brokaw has celebrated McCain's birthday with him and served as his personal advocate at NBC News--but giving Brokaw the benefit of the doubt that he wouldn't let his bias show.

Well, that was silly of me.

Brokaw laughed openly at McCain's various attempts at humor, and it appeared on at least two occasions that McCain was gesturing to Brokaw behind Obama's back as he spoke--neither of which would have bothered me nearly as much if his demonstrable preference wasn't made manifest in a glaring disparity between his graciousness toward each candidate.

Brokaw thanked Obama exactly twice: Once after he answered the question about who he has in mind for Treasury Secretary ("Senator Obama, thank you very much.") and once at the very end of the debate ("Thank you, Sen. Obama.").

Brokaw thanked McCain seven times: After he answered whether the economy would get worse before it gets better ("Thank you, Sen. McCain."), after his answer to the question about sacrifice ("Sen. McCain, thank you very much."), after his response about reforming entitlement programs ("Sen. McCain, thank you very much."), after he talked about American R&D ("Thank you very much, Senator."), after he spoke about the McCain Doctrine ("Sen. McCain, thank you very much."), after he answered the final questions ("Thank you very much, Sen. McCain."), and at the very end of the debate ("Thank you, Sen. McCain.").

It was enough that I noticed it during the debate. It was also enough that Iain, who had no knowledge of the preexisting friendship between Brokaw and McCain, noticed it, too. "Could that moderator get his heed any furver oop McCain's arse? Enough wif the fank-yous!"

None of the above actually matters--Obama won the debate handily. But I thought, for future reference, it was worth noting that Brokaw seemed unable to be totally respectful toward Obama.

No wonder he and McCain are pals. Lots in common.

Digg!

Does Selecting Clinton Mean Obama's Focused on Human Rights?
I'm hoping that this selection means the president-elect is going to put some much-needed emphasis on global human rights.

It was like he was annoyed with Obama the whole time. I didn't know they were personal friends (I just thought they had more history together), but I thought it was inappropriate that they picked him. He doesn't seem very objective to me. Not to mention the fact that all 3 moderators are men. Maybe a little variety, or at least someone who's not in the "old boy's" club with McCain! WTF?

These debates are severely disappointing to me, the way they're in such entertainment format, like a game show. I hate it!

It was probably to Obama's good that the commentator and one of the Senator's were good friends. In spite of the adversity from two fronts, Obama showed himself to be poised, presidential, and cool under fire. It showed him to be the better man of the three on stage. Congratulations Barack!!!

is also a good friend of Warren Buffet, and his inner sanctum. The "news man" is a whole lot more than just that...it would be interesting to find out just how much more?

Most people make fun of Faux Newz...the shows that Brokaw moderates are just as phony, on the flip side.

Now that two bit propped up 'Anchorman' Brokow is allowed to be overseer of a Town hall- was he hoping to provoke a 'Lynching'
By the Way Tom, The 'Boom' has CAUSED this Current National meltdown. Your beloved Boomers (who are actually those born before WW2 Through about 1950. My Sisters were born by parents Who were too young to be in WW2 ('55 & 57) therefore it's effect was NONE on their Conception or upbringing. and certainly MY year of '63, had NO resemblence to the Boomers!Seems your Boomers Were all about Love & Peace until their Asses Reached the Italian Leather Highbacks in Industry boardrooms!)George W.Bush and John McCain are Boomers, Obama is NOT!WE are the 'Me Generation' as in ...

BROKAW SHOWED HIS TRUE COLORS. HE SHOULD BE BETTER THAN THAT--- WE ALL SAW IT,

BROKAW, SHOWED HIS TRUE COLORS. An obvious McCain supporter and it showed! He was miffed that OBAMA did so well and McCain didn't, which compelled him to be suddenly obsessed with the TIME!!!! He asked them to move only when OBAMA was in view. IT WAS UGLY and showed me a new side of BROKAW I won't forget. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! We all saw through that glass sealing and the bad Brokaw performance. He was the reason OBAMA got so many strategic foreign military questions. The average person doesn't even know who the political leaders even are in regions of Bosnia, Afganistan or Pakistan for that matter, let alone what the true issues are so to have asked these questions was SUSPECT! And the people were stagnant. They could have been wax figures almost. They were clearly instructed, warned not to be human on camera. I didn't like it. It was too artificial, and McCain still lost even after all that help!

Also, another point, I was curious about. The big emphasis on the economy as KEY FACTORS ON MOST AMERICAN MINDS, made me think most of the questions would be domestic. They weren't. The ratio of foreign questions versus Economic and domestic question were suspect to me. Did they think anybody was fooled? How many caught that little diddy? I certainly did!!!

The treatment Barrack received clearly showed BROKAW was miffed that OBAMA did so well and McCain didn't, which compelled him to be suddenly obsessed with the TIME!!!! GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! We all saw through that glass sealing! I have lost some respect for Brokaw after seeing this tactic.

OBAMA wiped the floor with MCCain, again and again. I enjoyed it and my popcorn.

Hurry Nov 4th, lets clear this slate!!!

Arrogance

The arrogance of McCain matched the arrogance of Brokaw. He interrupted Obama on several occasions to tell him that he went over the time limit. Brokaw is ineffective in his role as moderator since he appeared to be more interested in the confines of his little box of time, rather than the substance of the debate. He's a creep and has lost his usefulness.

To expect anything else from this industrial media owed system is too naive to believe.
Each of the 'moderators" have been Republican oriented media personalities; lehrer of PBS,Ifill of PBS; Brokaw of ABC and next Shiefer of CBS.
If there was to be another "debate" it would be moderated by Foxnews.

The fix is in.

I doubt that the geezer bias has a positive impact for McCain. They are all part of the past, and as McCain's insightful running mate says, we're looking ahead to the future. It's hard to see any of them there.

Brokaw & McStupid - Common Ground
Posted by: Magginkat on Oct 9, 2008 9:33 AM

Brokaw & McCain have something else in common. They are both beady eyed creeps. Honestly, I know looks are not supposed to count but what the hay can one say when that's the most noticable thing about them? Heaven knows that neither one is interesting to listen to.

To quote Jeff Schweitzer at Huffington Post:

Let's just say what everybody is thinking, but too polite to say out loud. Senator McCain has become the creepy old uncle that embarrasses the family at weddings and holidays. He rants incoherently, repeats himself, lies about the past, and mumbles answers that make no sense. The kids lower their eyes, squirming in embarrassment, while mom and dad pretend that Uncle Mac just said something interesting. Well, we are not sitting around the kitchen table at Thanksgiving; we are electing a president of the United States. Too much is at stake to let the crazy uncle near the liquor cabinet.....

I noted everything you say here about debate; never once did McCain face Obama directly, even calling him "that one." This from a senator to a more-than-equal senator who always addressed him as Sen. McCain or John. Your article was right on target, and I appreciate that.

It was unconscienable for Brokaw to moderate this debate. I have never liked him but I wanted to smack him during this debacle. Obama would have been within his rights to refuse Brokaw as the moderator here.
I never saw so much deference paid to a complete moron like McCain. It was so obvious that Brokaw and McCain should have gotten a room. What the hell was the network thinking? Is Brokaw such a power there? Lets hope that the next debate will have a more level ground. Otherwise forget it.The only saving grace was that Obama was the solid winner anyway. How could anyone in their right mind prefer Grampa Diapers over the brilliant Obama?

I can no longer respect Tom Brokaw and MSNBC should be ashamed of themselves for giving him that much clout. He should be taken off MTP--he has no place taking the seat of Tim Russert. Brokaw is jealous or envious of the audiences both Matthews and Olbermann have now, and they get quoted and talked about waaay more than Brokaw does now.
