Al Gore Had a Plan to Avoid this Economic Crisis 8 Years Ago

Posted by Melissa McEwan, Shakesville at 1:56 PM on September 26, 2008.

Silly, nerdy, wonky Al Gore with his dorky lockbox ... oh wait ... he was right ... oops.

In the middle of the night last night, I awoke from a dream about Al Gore. It wasn't really a dream in the traditional sense, so much as it was a memory. I was recalling, from somewhere deep in my subconscious, one of his debates against Bush in 2000, during which Gore was talking about how he was going to take the budgetary surplus created during the Clinton presidency and put it in a lockbox to protect our social safety net.

And Bush was sneering at him.

When I woke up, I remembered how Al Gore was viciously mocked for his "lockbox" campaign theme, everywhere from SNL skits to mainstream debate coverage: "He must have used the word 'lockbox' about 20 times." Even after he'd lost, the media harangued him about his lockbox: "Well, maybe the beard should go into the lockbox!"

Al Gore's lockbox was routinely treated like the butt of a joke. Silly, nerdy, wonky Al Gore with his dorky lockbox!

Just sayin'.

Did I describe that as a dream, the thing I had last night? No -- it was a nightmare.

Digg!

Does Selecting Clinton Mean Obama's Focused on Human Rights?
I'm hoping that this selection means the president-elect is going to put some much-needed emphasis on global human rights.

...20 years ago to avoid this mess. So what?

Let it go already, Gore's already shown how savvy he is in his new career as climate change poser boy. He's making millions!

Thats why the Clintons - esp Hillary Hated Gore.
Seems so far he may still be the only one smart enough to get off that careening locomotive.
Must have had a 'come to Jesus' when he began looking into Glbal Warming- Saw the errors of the Corp Complict DLC- Killing our Economy by dissolving the FreeMaket, bowing down to Corp interest- relaxing regulatory oversight and Reckless Gambling in the '90s'. Not to mention the 'Survial of the fittest' NAFTA agreement.
think may be Al decided to return to being a REAL Democrat over the last Several years? He has yet to admit the Privatization, thus Profiteering in Energy is Counter Productive to 'Energy Independence'. If we owned our OWN Energy as a national- WE would be the ones, not only Profitting But Controlling it.
Since '00 Al Gore has earned far more respect from this Ol' Dem, but even though I voted for him, I did not Love him as a Candidate for president at the time.

Too bad he lacked a plan (or spine) for actually winning the white house in the first place.

Its time to stop pining away for President Saint Gore.

While reading this article and the comments, the numbers of the Gross National Debt and the Irak war rose by more than a million Dollars. What insaniry by the Bushits and company. But afterall they profit from it while John and Jane Doe dont know how to pay for their living. Neocon democracy at its best.

The only thing that will get Obama a win in November is the financial meltdown--if he plays his cards right and if voters overcome their misgivings about him, whatever they may be.

And if he does win, don't expect him to carry you in his coattails. His top advisers have connections with Wall Streeters who would benefit from any federal bailout money. He sings the tune of his paymasters like any other politician.

The young Obamans out there will have to wait and see. The older ones should know better, but have gotten swept away in their desperation for positive change. Until voters stop feeding the same beast that is devouring them, the carnage will continue and they and their loved ones and hopes and dreams will be consumed too.
