Does life begin at fertilization? Implantation? These may seem like theoretical questions to most Americans but Coloradans will be voting on precisely when they think life begins come November. And if they agree with the ballot initiative being presented, they'll vote to confer full human rights onto fertilized eggs.

Every Republican Puritan knows when life is important. Its importance starts at conception and ends at birth.

Birth control (and this has really been defined, even by the left, as essentially a woman's responsibility, NOT a man's) doesn't suit Conservatives/Corporatists/Primitive Mystery Religionists of any stripe (as well as progressives, too), because it infringes mainly an a man's sexual prowess and HIS view of fertility as a measure of his worth in society. In that context, also, it inhibits the "right" of a "chosen people", i.e. Americans, Jews, Muslims, whatever (notice I use "Americans" because of our mistaken belief in our own "exceptionalisn", whether we are Apocalyptic Millenialists or Joe Six-Pack) to be fruitful, multiply, and kick everyone else's ass into slavery.

Gotta keep breeding so as to have a good stock of slaves and intelligentsia servants to choose from, then murder the rest....at an unspecified time after birth.

Well if each fertilization is alive shouldn't each fertilization get food stamps, income tax exemption and food stamps, etc depending on parents's income situation. Do CO taxpayers really want to pay for this. If they don't pay isn't that age discrimination. But what about maximum # of persons permitted in apartment. will someone be in violation of a lease as soon as fertilization occurs

We, the human species, are about to become an endangered species!!! We have given our nation to the BEAST of division!!! While, Americans, were jockeying for positions of privilege, over others, the family units were divided, because a country with strong families, can't be defeated!!! The families, have been replaced by the corporations!!! We as a species, are but cattle, to these corporate interests!!! HOW LONG BEFORE FAMILY IS OUTLAWED!!!HOW LONG BEFORE ALL BABIES ARE MADE IN FORD BABY FACTORY???How long before we have a new McDonald's half way plan---HALF BERGER/ HALF BURGLAR??? How long before we have public "DEATH MATCHES" IN THE COLUSIUMS??? How long before you can buy and sell "ORGANS/ IMORTALITY", on EBAY??? Have we not become as the Bible states: man against man, woman against woman, neighbor against neighbor, brother against brother!!! The state of Israel was put in place, in order to play out the book of Revelation!!! Do you "NOT-SEE" WW iii, knocking at the door??? Martial law, breathing down your necks??? We have no one but ourselves to blame for this!!! Our division, divided, these once "UNITED STATES"!!! GREED/ CAPITOLISM, cheapened/ destroyed, the "EARTH" by putting a price on everything!!! THIS CORPORATE BEAST/ ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, HAS NO REGUARD FOR LIFE OVER PROFITS, AND OUR GOVERNMENT SOLD US ALL INTO SLAVERY, WHILE WERE SQUABLING EACH OTHER OVER WHO WAS FREE!!! NOW NONE OF US ARE!!! UNITE, UNITE, UNITE, IF IT'S NOT TO LATE, QUIT FIGHTING AMONST OUTSELVES, LIKE A BUNCH OF SPOILED CHILDREN, THAT'S ABOUT TO GET THE BIGGEST SPANKING, IN THE HISTORY OF MAN, BECAUSE WE REFUSE TO HONOR THE SABBATH MILLINNIUM, AND PLANT THE PLANET!!! WE HAVE REAPED IT, IT IS TIME TO SOW IT!!! THE BEAST HAS BUILT A HIGH TECH TOWER OF BABLE, THE UNIVERSAl SPACE STATION, WHERE THEY PLAN ON RULING AS GOD FROM ABOVE,(ISIAH 14:12-14), ARE YOU READY FOR THE ALIENS, THAT HAVE COME TO (EAT YOU)SAVE YOU FROM YOURSELF??? ARE YOU READY FOR THE MARK OF THE BEAST??? OUR DIVISION, HAS ALLOWED IT TO BE!!! SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST, MAN, HAS NOW RETURNED BACK TO THE ANIMAL KINGDOM!!! PREPARE, PREPARE,PREPARE!!!

The life of a "POT SEED" STARTS WHEN A COP FINDS IT!!! Then when they germinate them, they well charge you with a full grown plant, for each and every germinated one!!! The seeds have to die, in order to be reborn!!! life starts at germination/conception!!! life is the leading cause of death, and killing it before it's born, will not stop it from dieing!!! Protecting us from ourselves, because we might get sick or die, is an abortion of our constitutional right to "LIFE, LIBERTY, AND THE PERSUIT OF HAPPINESS"!!! But we can't have a brave new world, if we don't have a master race!!! CHAMPIONS: no time for losers!!! NO OLD PEOPLE; NO SICK PEOPLE; NO FREE THINKERS; NO CRIMINALS; ONE RELIGION/ CONFORMITY!!! Hitlers plan: REVISITED!!! IF WE DON'T ALL CHOOSE LIFE, LIFE AS WE KNOW IT IS OVER!!!

Well Done part 1 of 2

This was an excellent short visual lesson on this issue. It got right to the heart of the matter, science has not determined the moment of life and the bible does not specify this either. Life at conception is a Christian belief. This can't be enforced on a woman whose religious belief does not support this view.

Not all fertilized seedlings make it to actual birth. The majority do not. These would need to be considered deaths and the funeral industry would be booming. I wonder if they have any coffins small enough to cushion a fertilized egg sloughed off during menstruation. Maybe that's our next pet rock money maker! Nah, bad taste!

It is just so grandly ridiculous. I read that Bush was trying to pass a law that places birth control in the class of abortion methods so that Pharmacists and Doctors can refuse to distribute it based on their religious beliefs. My health care providers can honor their views just as I can honor mine. It's an equal rights kind of country like that.

Exactly what does Colorado hope to achieve with this issue? To outlaw sex unless we get a permit before proceeding? Will we have pregnancy detection meters in place to identify potential murderers before they walk into a doctor’s office so they can be escorted by a pro-life advocate? How far can this absurdity go people?

How long do you think it will be before the McCain/Palin administration start providing assistance to all us ignorant women to hold funerals for all the babies we shed never suspecting we were spontaneous murderers? How many kids would I have right now if every fertilized egg I carried these past 20 years became an actual baby? Oh, now that's one scary damn thought! I'd definitely qualify for food stamps then!

Do these idiots even realize how many low-income mouths there would be to feed, provide health care to, clothe, and educate if they got their wish and all abortions ceased? And they bitch now about the costs of public assistance programs?

I guess this means that every one of these patriotic Christians will step up to the plate and adopt one of these dear babies saved at a rate of 1.3M each year. I wonder if they realize that many of these babies will be of a different shade than them. Can the love a brown Mexican baby from a dirty immigrant they hate with all their hearts? Or a crack baby dark as midnight from the depths and despair of the ghetto when they hate their parents as lazy, shiftless criminals? I shiver at the prospect of conservative compassion these most helpless of new citizens would be subjected to.

Is it more compassionate for a drug addict or alcoholic to abort a pregnancy as early as possible or to give birth to a special needs child to be placed in the hands of a believer in spare the rod spoil the child parenting who hates the child’s race enough that they wish them dead? Especially the ones who are defective from zero health care and inadequate nutrition during gestation. A slobbering forever infant who's shit grows more offensive by the year that can't hold a conversation. I'm sure this will be a thrilling parenting experience and a total walk with Jesus. A daily joy. They'll even sing songs about it in church. How happy they are in their burden of love. I can see it all now, can't you?

The Blonde Lady Wins It Hands Down!

Gosh, this video convinced me that the arguments that fertilized eggs are not human beings are weak in the extreme. To have to make a straw man out of the other side in order to win is a sure sign of intellectual sloppiness.

Pregnant women sure act as if their conception is meaningful--I'm the mother of 8, and I can assure you they were all people to me at conception. Natural "sloughing" is not the same as acting to cause sloughing on purpose--that kind of distinction is Law 101. And the law doesn't impose beliefs? What if I believed incest was a right, or polygamy? The law would tell me, "tough; doesn't matter what you believe; this is wrong." The law is not just an arbiter, it is a teacher.

Thanks for giving me a video I can show to my kids to demonstrate how intellectually bankrupt the pro-abortion side is.

Gullible Fundamentalists

I find only one thing wrong with the arguments presented in the video. It is wrong to think that the personhood of a fertilized egg is a doctrine invented by the Christianoid fundamentalists. In fact, it was first invented by the Catholic church, for whom the increase in the population of their followers meant more butts in pews on Sunday (and other days) and more money in the collection plate. Thus it was a doctrine (or rather dogma) motivated directly by economic concerns. The Protestants who separated from the Catholic church over doctrinal positions that differed from Biblical teachings inadvertently borrowed a number of Catholic positions without apparently realizing it.

The scriptural position on the beginning of personhood is stated quite clearly and quite early in Gen. 2:7--"And the Lord God formed (man) from the dust of the earth and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and (the) man became a living soul" ("a breathing life", a "nephesh chai"). Please notice that this verse records two actions on God's part: 1) the forming of the body of the man and 2)the bestowing of the breath of life. Clearly only with the completion of both these actions did the man become a living soul. The text does not say that God formed the body of the man and the man became a living soul and then God gave the breath of life. This should be clear to even the most dimwitted reader. Yet somehow it isn't.

And as for that old chestnut so loved by the woman haters, "Abortion is murder; the Bible says so"; that's a neat trick for the scripture to say that abortion is murder without using the word "abortion" which does not appear anywhere in the entire Bible. Check any concordance, the word is not used in the Bible at all. Clearly, God's opinion is that human life and personhood begins at birth. Once again the "butts in pews, dollars in the plate" theory wins out over actually reading the book that the Christianoids claim to base their faith on. Bucks win over truth every time, don't they?

With love under will

the Bible supports abortion rights

Genesis 38:24. Tamar's pregnancy was discovered three months after conception, presumably because it was visible at the time. This was positive proof that she was sexually active. Because she was a widow, without a husband, she was assumed to be a prostitute. Her father-in-law, Judah, ordered that she be burned alive for her crime. If Tamar's fetuses had been considered to have any value whatsoever, her execution would have been delayed until after their birth. There was no condemnation on Judah for deciding to take this action.

Exodus 21:22-24. If two men are fighting and one injures a pregnant woman and the fetus is killed, he shall repay her according to the degree of injury inflicted upon her, and not the fetus.

Author Brian McKinley, a born-again Christian, sums up the passage as:

"Thus we can see that if the baby is lost, it does not require a death sentence-it is not considered murder. But if the woman is lost, it is considered murder and is punished by death."

Halacha (Jewish Law) does define when a fetus becomes a nephesh (person), a full-fledged human being, when the head emerges from the womb. Before then, the fetus is considered a "partial-life". The fetus has great value because it is potentially a human life, it gains full human status after birth only.

Abortions are not permitted on the grounds of genetic imperfections of the fetus. Abortions are permitted to save the mother's life or health. With the exception of some Orthodox authorities, Judaism supports abortion access for women. Each case must be decided individually by a rabbi well-versed in Jewish law.

The Babylonian Talmud (Yevamot 69b) states that: "the embryo is considered to be mere water until the fortieth day." Afterwards, it is considered subhuman until it is born. Rashi, the great 12th century commentator on the Bible and the Talmud, states clearly of the fetus 'lav nephesh hu--it is not a person.' The Talmud contains the expression, "the thigh of its mother," i.e., the fetus is deemed to be part and parcel of the pregnant woman's body.

This is grounded in Exodus 21:22. That biblical passage outlines the Mosaic Law in a case where a man is responsible for causing a woman's miscarriage, which kills the fetus. If the woman survives, then the perpetrator has to pay a fine to the woman's husband. If the woman is killed, the perpetrator is also killed. This indicates that the fetus has value, but does not have the status of a person.

There are two additional passages in the Talmud which shed some light on abortion. They imply that the fetus is considered part of its mother: One section states that if a man purchases a cow that is found to be pregnant, then he is owner of both the cow and the fetus. Another section states that if a pregnant woman converts to Judaism, that her conversion also applies to her fetus.

Some Jewish authorities have ruled in specific cases. one case involved a woman who becomes pregnant while nursing a child. Her milk supply would dry up. If the child is allergic to all other forms of nutrition except mother's milk, then it would starve. An abortion would be permitted in this case, a potential person, would be justified to save the life of the child, an actual person.

Conservative, Reconstructionist and Reform Judaism are formally opposed to government regulation of abortion. They feel that the decision should rest with the woman, her husband, her doctor and her clergyperson. Some Orthodox authorities agree with this stance. Polls have found up to 90% of American Jews supporting abortion rights.

The New Testament is more permissive than the Old. Paul claims Jesus told him three times, "my grace is sufficient for thee" (II Corinthians 12:8-9), and Christians misinterpret this verse to mean they're free to do as they please--ignoring Jesus' and Paul's other teachings.
