Another good catch from Media Matters:

On the November 14 edition of his CNN Headline News program, Glenn Beck interviewed Rep.-elect Keith Ellison (D-MN), who became the first Muslim ever elected to Congress on November 7, and asked Ellison if he could "have five minutes here where we're just politically incorrect and I play the cards up on the table." After Ellison agreed, Beck said: "I have been nervous about this interview with you, because what I feel like saying is, 'Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies.' " Beck added: "I'm not accusing you of being an enemy, but that's the way I feel, and I think a lot of Americans will feel that way."
Beck was interviewing Ellison about the Democrats' plans for Iraq.

It is a fair question

It is a problem in all western countries. Many muslims hold very high level jobs, and as we can see in the UK, they are often members of organisations that have been proscribed as terrorist organisations. It is fair to ask if they can be trusted and if they really are able to keep a distance from the terrorists.

Ellison does not occupy a politcally appointed position that requires a security clearance, and his credentials as a patriot have already been throughly vetted by his constituents during our electoral process. Suggesting his faith presupposes membership in a terrorist organization is myopic, ignorant and discriminatory. Should all Christian congessmen be asked if they support assasinating abortion doctors and the fire-bombing of women's clinics? Indicting all members of an religious organization with the crimes of their most radical element is proof that you have a meager understanding of what the real problem actually is. This is not a fair question, but a baited one designed to provoke and appeal to morons such as yourself.

"Mr. Kennedy, how do we know you are not just doing the Pope's bidding?"

"Mr. Inouye, how can we be sure you don't want to represent Hawaii just so you can bomb Pearl Harbor again?"

"Dr. King, aren't you just trying to overthrow America on behalf of Africa?"

"Mr. Reagan, isn't it true that the Screen Actors Guild is a Communist organization?"

Maybe we could have an Inane Question Contest.

Those are my entries.

I can't get too worked up about this, if only because he qualified the question about 8 times before asking it. Having said that, the Rep-elect could have nailed him for the double-standard (associating all members of one faith with that faith's most radical elements), but instead he grinned, and said something defensive about how there's no need to question his own patriotism. Pity.

FIRE HIM! That was NOTHING but biggoted pap and he should be ashamed he ever put it out into the public.

I wonder.. would he tell Bush or any other WHITE CHRISTIAN candidate that he is "nervous" because they need to prove that they aren't working with people who bomb abortion clinics or "Christian" white supremecist groups, or Christian groups that seek to have an American theocracy???

FIRE HIM! This question COULD have been asked in a tactful way because it is a legitimate point.. but the way this was asked is disgusting.

A) You can't prove a negative.
B) Why should anyone "prove" their patriotism? And what does that really prove, anyway? And by who's definition?
C) To CNN reporter: Prove to me that you don't have your head up your a**.

To even think of asking such a question, even with multiple clarifications, is despicable. He would have been better to ask "Have you had any negative feedback from constituents about the fact that you are a Muslim?"

That line could be asked of a Christian, and maybe would be, in the right context.

It seems to me the real issue he was pressing here is that because 1) he's a practicing Muslim, and 2) he's a Democrat, then he could be "working with the enemy"

When did McCarthyism rear it's head so blatantly again? Except now it's Muslim's instead of Communists...

My greatest fear for the US is this: Another attack on American soil. If you think things are crazy now, just imagine how bad things would be if there is another attack of any kind...

Don't people know the simplest rules of logic any more?

You can't prove a negative. It's up to the people who affirm a positive - that this man is working with the "other" - to prove THAT.

That's why in any civilized legal system it's not up to the accused to prove they didn't do it - it's up to the prosecutors to prove their case.

I wonder the reaction if it was asked of the Jewish members of congress to prove they are not working with the known spies at AIPAC.

Or asking the HUNDREDS of Jewish members of Cabinet and Congress over the decades if they have any links to Mossad ( Israeli Inteligence agency)

"Evidence linking these Israelis to 9/11 is classified. I cannot tell you about evidence that has been gathered. It's classified information." -- US official quoted in Carl Cameron's Fox News report on the Israeli spy ring and its connections to 9-11.

After all, Fair is fair.

I've seen EXACTLY this kind of behavior time and time again. Coming from the south, I've cringed as I've watched people stutter and qualify themselves to justify asking a racist or bigoted question born out of ignorance. These same people, once the minority left the room, would revert back to casually using epithets or other offensive and derogatory language. I've seen it again and again. And I cringed watching Beck because that's exactly how he's acting. All that stuttering you see? That's because he's nervous. Watch closely - he's about to reveal just how prejudice he really is and he's scared. He's scared because he knows he's outing himself as a jackass.

Get rid of him! And get rid of whoever decided he'd be the best person to do the interview. It's obvious he has way too many personal issues to be qualified interviewing a Muslim.

This is a perfect example of the sort of backward, false, disingenuous "journalism" practiced by the right. You float a baseless accusation, ("'Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies.'"), then you simply blame it on "a lot of Americans." It matches Fox's "many people are saying" clarification they use repeatedly in their reporting with little or no facts to back up these "many" people. You continually float the idea and hope it sticks with a large chunk of your viewers.

It seemed to me that jerk (must be related to the chimp) inferred that Congressman Ellison was elected because Minneapolis has a large Somali population. While that is true it is far from large enough to have much effect on a local election. Mr. Ellison won with a very respectable margin. Not surprising since he had already disinguished himself in the Minnesota legislature.

If CNN were forced to hire someone as far to the left as Glen Beck is to the right, who would they hire? I can't think of anyone by name. I guess somebody from the CPUSA would qualify or perhaps some Trotskyist splinter group could be as far off center as Beck. Can anyone imagine CNN giving a regular show in prime time to such a person? I guess what I am trying to show here is how far right our main stream media has tilted. The center has become the far left.

Any decent journalist could have framed the question better, such as:

"Some Americans have said that Jewish-American leaders have divided loyalties on the Israeli-Palestinian issue. Likewise, some Americans may wonder if your Muslim faith will cause you to have any divided loyalties on foreign policy issues. What would you say to such sentiments?"
