The top U.S. envoy to the UN in Afghanistan was fired after he accused the head of the mission of covering up massive fraud in the presidential election. Peter Galbraith alleges that nearly one out of three votes for incumbent Karzai were fraudulent.

Digg!

Galbraith was not a "US envoy to the United Nations in Afghanistan". He was a UN official with American citizenship.

Certainly not to bring Bush style "democracy" I hope.

Fuck it, ...time to leave.

Galbraith's belief in elections is misplaced

I think Hamid Karzai is the best man for a nearly impossible job, and to think Afghanistan can be an elective democracy like a modern European country is just not realistic. I recommend Prince Turki al-Faisal's comments in the Washington Post today ("A to-do list for Afghanistan").

Afghanistan needs stability more than "democracy"

To what extent is the push for free and fair elections a matter directed as much, if not more, to the politics of the countries currently providing the forces fighting in Afghanistan? Afghanistan needs stability. Iran says NATO should have sent tractors rather than tanks.
