The New Yorker’s Seymour Hersh reports that late last year, “Congress agreed to a request from President Bush to fund a major escalation of covert operations against Iran.” The “Presidential Finding” was designed to destabilize religious leadership and gather “intelligence about Iran’s suspected nuclear-weapons program“:

But the scale and the scope of the operations in Iran, which involve the Central Intelligence Agency and the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), have now been significantly expanded, according to the current and former officials. Many of these activities are not specified in the new Finding, and some congressional leaders have had serious questions about their nature.

“The Finding was focused on undermining Iran’s nuclear ambitions and trying to undermine the government through regime change,” a person familiar with its contents said, and involved “working with opposition groups and passing money.”

Update: U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker, reacting to Hersh's story on CNN's Late Edition, said: "I can tell you flatly that U.S. forces are not operating across the Iraqi border into Iran."

Which can be a lie, but may be true implicating that the ops are performed out of Afghanistan.

The strike wave will come in from Azerbaijan, Kyrgystan, the carrier group, Israel, Afghanistan and Iraq. It will involve NATO and Gulf allies. It will be so swift and happen at night, Iran will not know what hit them. It won't be shock and awe, but a giant Godzilla stomp on Iran.

Iran is a country that can barely keep its planes flying. It may have Russian anti-aircraft defences, but they won't last the first half hour. Remember: Israel shut down Syria's defences (the same that Iran has) and was able to bomb their site with ease. I am glad they are wasting their resources and energy digging 'graves for the enemy' - it will give them somewhere to put the Revolutionary Guard.

It should be noted that the US is helping to support the Iranian group Jundallah, (the Iranian People's Resistance Movement), according to a former CIA officer. This group is vicious, according to a CFR analyst who spoke with Hersh, and HAS ALLEGED TIES TO AL QAEDA.

Now WE are involved with a suspected Al Qaeda-linked terrorist group. Should we start bombing ourselves now?!

....and we all have been calling this. Although we suspected mid-October. The US and Israel, along with Hagee's congregation must be in full swoon by now. If this occurs now it will be seen as an overt act of extreme aggression by most of the World so I find it difficult, yes funny okay about it being difficult, that the Murderer in Chief and Olmert could actually go away and wash their forever blood stained hands and this is done without severe reprisals. Of course the N. Korea Appeasers Ball could have been a way to get us in and not out of a Nuclear War, or the End of the World as we know it, N. Korea, China, Russia, lots 'o places to take off/land, harbor. I hope Turkey doesn't allow Incerlik to be used. This is site perfect.
Whatever, if it happens maybe I won't have to wake up and fight every damn day, I doubt this will occur. It is Fucked up enough, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, I think the Psychopath in Chief and his minions would find it quite nice to dump this in the Incumbents lap. If Barack, he screwed him, if McInsane they will say great War Time President, for a Traitor.

Blustering ourselves into war

Even if all this bluster is just intended to coerce Iran into concessions, it is dangerous. In August 1914, the European powers lost control of events and blustered themselves into war.

...very interesting discussion. Actually, it kinda pissed me off. There's no stopping these a-holes, Democrats and Republicans, from starting a war with Iran.

Look for a full scale invasion of Iran in the very near future.

We are so f*cked as a democracy.

First off let me mention how appropriate your last name seems to be.

I heard the same assurances as this statement "I can tell you flatly that U.S. forces are not operating across the Iraqi border into Iran." about the supposed WMD's and nuclear program in Iraq. Pardon me if I find any official statement by a current US government official as suspect and unrelieable.

I also noticed that you only mentioned the border with Iraq. What about the border on the other side of Iran. Did you forget about Afghanistan(check with any atlas) and that you also have troops and intelligence agents in that country. So are they running the ops from there? Or will we get another flat denial?

How long has Israel been making nukes and nobody says a damn word or demands inspections and sanctions. How long has Israel been fighting with their neighbors and nobody says a friggin word about the humanitarian crisis going on? I guess anybody that could say anything and have it stick is afraid of being labeled as "anti-Semitic". Goddamn spineless pussies!

Enough with the bullshit, it's time to call it like it is! If the semi-theocratic, make- believe-democratic state of Israel is making threats to their neighbors, oppressing its populace, making nukes without the authority to do so, it's time for a preemptive strike and regime change!

Don't bother calling me anti-Semitic, I got friends that are Jews. ;-)

Mr. Hersh isn't wrong about this stuff. He knows what he's talking about. He's been trying to warn us about this for years now. He had it pegged over two years ago.

We're in Iran "softening up" the clerical targets and Israel will do the actual bombing, with us doing "back-up." These bastards who occupy the White House have every intention of trying to steal yet another election through fear and intimidation of the electorate here in the US because THEY HAVE NOTHING ELSE!

It's McStain's only hope. And since he has agreed to continue to do the bidding of this administration, they will provide the "cover story" to make it happen.

I hope the people of the United States aren't that stupid... although I certainly won't hold my breath.

the secret world of the truth

Years back, after Bush I’s gulf war, I lived near Playa del Rey and used to frequent a drinking establishment and excellent foodery there frequented by a cross section of LA’s up and comers, called Mo’s. One night we were all loaded on Guinness and Murphy’s and a german accented diving contractor was regaling me with a bit of his life’s past story. He was an ex-navy seal and his team had been in the war as a clandestine desert advance reconnaissance and laser target drop squad for the “smart bombs” that the navy and air force were planning on raining down on the Iraqis. Each proposed target to be exploded had to have this laser device on it, or the smart bombs were just dumb. He described in our drunken talk, how they were dressed as Iraqis and no Iraqi suspected anything with regard their activities. They were in country for more than 6 months prior to the invasion performing these tasks. All secret shit. They were the ones, he said, who saw what became the ‘highway of death”, and first directed the fighter jets to bomb and strafe the columns moving on the road. Once the invasion’s front lines hit the area they were in, they showed themselves to American troops and were immediately arrested and detained while their status was certified. He said getting the army to know who they were from the navy was never accomplished and the navy didn’t admit anything, ever, and that he and the team were transferred to naval jails instead. It took weeks of debriefing before one day they were just released back to duty. There should be no surprise to Americans that secret and denied border crossings are going on daily, or that teams of secret soldiers are always in country doing whatever to undermine that county’s abilities to defend itself from American designs. Everything is figured out and everything imaginable is in the works. Naïveté has to disappear from the popular mind after so much has been done in the name of America and exposed. It’s a function of denial by the populace. From our high horses, after all this time and all these wars in our history, we should be able to look at the trees in the forest without shock, and the hiding of our eyes.

Bombing raids to come

I live close to Egland AFB where they have recently begun conducting routine bombing practice sessions almost daily. I strongly suspect that we shall be up to ears in Iran sometime in August or September, so that the next Whit House occupant can suffer the consequences. Like the days when little spoiled George used to spill his milk on the floor just to see the maid clean it up.

My hope is that Sy is wrong, but if he isn't it seems to me impeachment proceedings should at least be started even if there is not enough time to proceed if this admin does attack Iran.
