Dutch Intelligence: U.S. Strike on Iran Likely 'Within Weeks'

Posted by Joshua Holland, AlterNet at 11:00 AM on September 2, 2008.

Intelligence agency shared info on potential targets with the CIA.

There has been so much smoke over the past few months -- so many leaks, so much speculation about a strike on Iran -- but the question remains whether there will be fire.

From the Jerusalem Post:

The Dutch intelligence service, the AIVD, has called off an operation aimed at infiltrating and sabotaging Iran's weapons industry due to an assessment that a US attack on the Islamic Republic's nuclear program is imminent, according to a report in the country's De Telegraaf newspaper on Friday.

The report claimed that the Dutch operation had been "extremely successful," and had been stopped because the US military was planning to hit targets that were "connected with the Dutch espionage action."

The impending air-strike on Iran was to be carried out by unmanned aircraft "within weeks," the report claimed, quoting "well placed" sources.

According to the report, information gleaned from the AIVD's operation in Iran has provided several of the targets that are to be attacked in the strike, including "parts for missiles and launching equipment."

"Information from the AIVD operation has been shared in recent years with the CIA," the report said.

On Friday, Ma'ariv reported that Israel had made a strategic decision to deny Iran military nuclear capability and would not hesitate "to take whatever means necessary" to prevent Teheran from achieving its nuclear goals.

According to the report, whether the United States and Western countries succeed in thwarting the Islamic Republic's nuclear ambitions diplomatically, through sanctions, or whether a US strike on Iran is eventually decided upon, Jerusalem has begun preparing for a separate, independent military strike.

It's impossible to know whether these are strategic leaks designed to compel Iran to abandon its nuclear energy (and possibly weapons) program or legitimate indications that a bunch of lunatics in Washington, Tehran and Tel Aviv are rushing to start another bloody conflagration in the Middle East. Let's hope it's the former; the latter would be disastrous on so many levels.

Digg!

against Iran?

Isn't the Dutch operation classic example of State sponsor terrorism?

Bush and Cheney will gladly start another war even if just for their own political purposes to support McCain's electoral prospects..

This may ignite a larger conflict which even if Obama is elected will dictate his term and administration and mitigate any ope for change and reforms..

Failure to Impeach Bush and Cheney or hold Impeachment Hearings to keep them at bay may be recorded by history as one of America's greatest failures..!

I heard the same thing in an interview with a Russian Duma member

He was some kind of Deputy Minister in the Duma. In the interview he said that Washington has 2 goals:

- Attack Iran before the November elections.
- Prevent Obama from becoming President.

This guy has access to knowledge we don't. And the interview was not with American media. It was South Asian. So he was not posturing to scare an American audience. I sure hope it's not true. These neocons are insane however and I wouldn't put anything past them.

You would think that the Deems would do anything to prevent this attack which would define Obamas/ or Mc Cain's first term. You would think that they would get together and form a non -attack congressional resolution. My guess is that the Deems are also on board to attack and will not stop Bush/Cheney. Lots a of luck......... Demo brats. Vote Nader.

this article is another reminder that the Bushies can do a whole lotta damage in 4 months! It is the time to remain vigilant and not get side-tracked by this election, as the world continues to become an ever-increasingly dangerous place.

This ain't over by a long shot. These fuckers will do ANYTHING to see that Obama doesn't win the White House.

I believe there are enough sensible, truly patriotic members of the military establishment who will tell the administration to get fu**ed.
The CIA, I'm not so sure. It may be that a reference to unmanned vehicles being used refers to a non-military force. God help us all...

...is Bush/Cheney declaring martial law and staying in power themselves.

I don't like Russia's Putin. But I believe him when he said that the US encouraged the Georgians to attack so as to create a crisis, therefore helping John McCain.

Why can't Bush/Cheney/McCain just rig the election rather than starting WW3? At least simply rigging the election would save hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of lives (especially if nukes are used against Iran)!
Oh, what's the difference? They will rig the election too.

More than a million Iraqis and Afghans are dead, and another 5 million displaced because the Democrats went along with Bush's crimes.

Now Iranians will die because of Democratic support of Bush.

This could have been stopped a year and a half ago, but the Democrats decided to allow it to continue.

Poor America. She used to be a great country.

...and here comes WWIII that the Bush family keeps talking about and wants so much to take place.
Yup this is what the Pope, my religion, wanted all along. And then he wants WWIV to be against Russia. So someday that will be another war we can all look forward too watching or becoming part of, as we die.

Then he can take over America and turn us into one of his third world banana republics, that he loves so well.

...for the BIG ONE coming anytime between now and January 20.
Local cops everywhere are just itching to join the fun. Martial law will be declared before the courts are able to get involved and give law enforcement the smackdown it needs. The borders will be further restricted so get out now.
Police state
National emergency
Iran war
Terrorist strike
Stolen election
A new, new Pearl Harbor
Economic collapse

Not that far-fetched, eh? It's no longer coming, it's here. These things have already happened.

the Lieberman children and grandchildren join the military to fight for our freedom. The Romneys too.

How about the military elegible Bush family offsprings and son-in-law, Henry Hagel?

And don't forget about Cheney's son-in law, Phillip Perry?

Add in Luke Russert, Andrew Rove and the three Kristol offsprings and the military elegible chickenhawks and their children there would be enough for a whole battalion?
