Who Are the 10 Closeted Gay Republicans in Congress?

Posted by Guest Blogger at 5:10 AM on June 15, 2007.

Howie Klein: Openly gay Democratic Congressman Barney Frank has said there are ten closeted conservative gays in Congress. He's outed a few, but who are the remaining hypocrites?

This post, written by Howie Klein, originally appeared on Down With Tyranny!

This evening I went to the L.A. County Library's author's series, ALOUD, to hear Daniel Hurewitz, who wrote Bohemian Los Angeles and the Making of Modern Politics and Stuart Timmons, who wrote Gay L.A.-- A History of Sexual Outlaws, Power Politics and Lipstick Lesbians. There was a great deal to savor and enjoy but what inspired me to run home and get to google was a mention of Frank Shaw, who was elected mayor of L.A. in 1933. "Unfortunately, he would eventually go into the history books as having led the most corrupt city administration in Los Angeles history" and he was the first U.S. mayor successfully recalled from office.

What brings him up these 70 years since that recall was his behavior while trying to deflect the public approbation resulting in his unconscionable corruption. He turned the L.A.P.D. loose on the 'til then unmolested gay community, the first time-- though not the last-- they would be scapegoated by an ambitious and crooked politician.

Before heading over to the Library I saw a New York Times story about a less socially divisive reaction to gay people, not in California, where we are currently burdened by a corrupt and Neanderthal Republican governor, but from Massachusetts, where the state legislature struck down attempts by right-wing loons driven insane by hollow interpretations of Bronze Age superstitions, to outlaw same-sex marriage.

"In Massachusetts today, the freedom to marry is secure," Gov. Deval Patrick said after the legislature voted 151 to 45 against the amendment, which needed 50 favorable votes to come before voters in a referendum in November 2008.
Massachusetts is the only state in America with full marriage equality. I guess it isn't a coincidence that Massachusetts also boasts one of only two openly gay members of Congress, Barney Frank (whose district, by the way, has a smaller percentage of gay people than the state in general).

In their May issue OUT Magazine featured "The Power 50" (they're obsessed with inane lists) and as part of that they interviewed Barney: "Out On The Hill-- Coming Out Didn't Stop Barney Frank From Becoming One of America's Most Powerful Politicians." One question stood out; actually, no questions stood out. One answer did though.
OUT: Are there closets full of closet cases on Capitol Hill?
Barney: "Sure. There are probably five or seven in the House and at least three senators.
Next question? Nope; they just let it drop. So, I had to turn to "Washington's Most Dangerous Man," my pal Mike Rogers to try to get to the bottom of this. Mike's web site, blogActive, makes a habit of exposing the worst of the hypocrites, the ones with the consistently homophobic voting records who also participate in closeted gay sex, the only kind Republicans approve of.

Mike is ultra cautious. He wants multiple sworn statements from participants and clear pictures before he'll out anyone, no matter how viciously anti-gay they are. Mike totally blew the cover of Virginia wingnut Ed Schrock, now retired, and for years has been helpful in getting out the information on Mark Foley (F-FL), also retired, and three who are still hiding in their closets, David Dreier (R-CA), James McCrery R-LA), and Larry Craig (R-ID).

Craig is a senator and surely one of the 3 Barney was referring to since he outed him on the Bill Maher show last year. And the others? Well, most people in DC who know about these things feel that Miss McConnell (R-KY) doesn't just act that way; he's as gay as any panicky right-wing closet case you never want to meet. Ditto for Lindsey Graham (R-SC). That's the easy part. Everyone knows about McConnell, Graham and Craig. What about all those House members?

Well, that's tougher. Dreier hardly even counts as being in the closet any longer since it's so widely known that he's gay, even in his own district... although no one ever speaks about it out loud. And McCrery thinks he inoculated himself by marrying his secretary and stashing her away somewhere deep in Louisiana. We've had some speculation about ex-high school wrestling coach Denny Hastert but the male prostitute who says he had sex with him was too embarrassed to be publicly identified. And people are pretty suspicious, for good reason, about Patrick McNutcase (R-NC). And the other 3? Mike's gone mum on me; but I know he's got some hot investigations he's tying up. Of course, Larry Flynt is trying to get to the bottom of all this too.

Digg!

Howie Klein was president of his freshman class, drove to Afghanistan and Nepal, became the president of Reprise Records and started a blog called Down With Tyranny!. He's always hated tyrants.

Hypocrisy is of course odious. But I'm not sure gossiping about a McCarthy-esque list is really the way to go here. We all have harmless peccadilloes that we'd rather were kept as our little secret (mmm tranny porn, I mean, um, never mind).

Screw these self-loathing assholes. They made their own bed, now let them furtively fuck in it. The progressive movement doesn't need their help to move ahead.

... I would consider 'outing' a shameful violation of someone's privacy. However, when the violated person is someone who in turn has been busily, and hypocritically, acting to favor discrimination and to foster hate, I don't have any qualms about outing. Two words, folks: Ted Haggard.

. . . on managing to reinforce, yet again, a common stereotype about gay men: that we’re all a bunch of limp-wristed, effete, girlie-men who refer to each other as “Miss” and other feminine pronouns. "Well, most people in DC who know about these things feel that Miss McConnell (R-KY)..."

While your main point is well made regarding the hypocrisy clearly demonstrated by the behavior on the part of the politicians involved, this post – along with others in this same vein on Alternet (and other Web sites) – continues to fail to recognize a very simple truth: for the people involved, their sexuality is in no way their identity – they are more concerned with pursuing, amassing and exercising their personal power within the political arena, which, if successful, leads to financial and material wealth for them and their constituents. Power – and the money that comes with it – are all these people care about, to the exclusion of their integrity (such as it is), reputation (within political circles), and mental/emotional health (obviously).

I definitely do not understand the intention behind posts/articles such as this and the work of Mike Rogers, but it seems to me that with all the other issues currently facing the LGBT community in particular, this country in general, and the world as a whole, the time and energy going into these so-called “journalistic” pursuits of “outing” people who are choosing to live their lives as they see fit in order to pursue their personal goals (however twisted they might be) could be better spent elsewhere.

Speaking as gay man, I think my bottom line is this: with everything else going on today, I don’t think anybody really cares about a couple of closet-cases up on Capital Hill - I know I don't . . .

Who cares? We're constantly being distracted by things that don't matter. So, what does matter. Example: Alberto Gonzales still has his job. That says alot more about us than who's gay. Iraq: They need more time. Guantanamo: closed yet? New Orleans: what's new there? Please stop filling space with things that belong in the tabloids. Thanks, ANNA

I honestly could care less who is in bed with whom and what they do there. Sometimes it IS a fun read (c'mon we all clicked on the link, didn't we?) but for the most part, it is none of my business.

What is the point of outing someone when they are not being a hypocrite about it or harming someone like Haggard and Foley? Being gay in itself is not a crime and should not be used to help bring someone down. Even if they are a Republican.

Compartmentalized?

Do you all think their gay-hating lawmaking is seperate from their selves?
"Family values" politicians with secret mistresses deserve to be outed (Gingrich, Hyde, Livingston) anti-abortion zealots who pay for their wife's abortion deserve to be outed (Bob Barr) and anti-gay lawmakers who are gay deserve to be outed. Those who attempt to make the rest of us live by laws they themselves refuse to follow are hypocrites and worse. They project their desire to lose their desire for the forbidden onto the rest of us, and somehow believe that if they can just make enough laws they themselves will finally stop breaking them.Therapy is appropriate, allowing them to torment society is not.

I think the point of this piece is the utter hypocracy of being a gay republican. ( here, I'll identify as "straight but not narrow") It's always been a mystery to me how Barney Frank ( or any other "out" GLBT person ) could be a republican.

If someone is so self loathing that they actively work against legislation that would benefit the GLBT community while belonging to it themselves, they don't need to be in a position of power, they need to be in 24/7 therapy.

as they see fit in order to pursue their personal goals" ought to do it somewhere other than in the US House and Senate WHERE THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO BE PURSUING THE GOALS OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

I don't care what they do in their bedrooms as long as they don't screw over me which they have done by giving Bush/Cheney a free hand while they go there merry way destroying this country.

On would expect that these "closeted gays", consdering all that they could lose, would have a level of concern for the rest of us when deciding who/what to support.

SO, TO HELL WITH THEM.

First I shall address The Agreement for use form and then the Outing of Republican Gays (which is after all a blatant contradiction of terms)
One cannot agree to make thoughtful statements about anything without including emotional content hypocrites! You are a coward, that’s Ok as I am a coward too. If I were not a coward I would have called for an Impeachment of George W. Bush on January 1st 2000. When the rank fatherless son wrested the presidency away from his Contender by the use of the American Legal system to do what fixed votes could not!
Hatred used in a manner to cleanse the soul is not necessarily a bad thing; it is when that dark emotion is used as an excuse to further human Violence by proponing reactionary’s that it becomes dangerous and hypocritical. Frankly I am disappointed though not surprised to see that hypocrites rule everything in this country including this site.

Republican Gays? Are you kidding me? Shame upon you and Fie upon this life that it should even notice or use ones sexual orientation to evaluate political performance (I am puzzled with myself on that last comment, those two words {political and performance} should not be used in the same sentence.). Where is Thomas Paine when you need the uppity blighter!?

Examine this social system openly lit by knowledge, work and without fear of consequences like: "We will throw you into file thirteen if you swear!” and you will see the monster churning in its sleep within the Serpents Egg!

Open you eyes people this miscreant and his cronies have stolen your Constitution! It is all but too late already; your namby pamby confused passive/aggression has opened the gateway to the very hell you claimed to be avoiding! Impeach this Madman and his entire cabinet now! Also, call for an investigation of all these so called democrats who stood by dumbly and let the Patriot Act and then HR3930. This was a Criminal act! If we overlook them we must over look Bush and his Cronies you got that people!?

Barney Frank is really a heterosexual!!

How does one "prove" his is not gay, or vice-versa? The charge is very similiar to the 'red scare' era of having to prove yourself 'not guilty' instead of the state/society/accusers proving you are guilty. I guess Craig could have live-sex with a woman (maybe over the internet) but even then it could be alledged that he is only 'faking it' or is 'bi'. I could accuse Barney Frank as being heterosexual and he can't prove me wrong.
ps: there are does of perverts and gays in both parties, but the Republican party attracts more of the gay crowd it seems. Read about the Larry King cover-up.

A gay republican is like a black Klansman. I am so sick and tired of the lying hypocrites that run our government. I don't care if they are gay but when they are gay and they say they are not (and vote with the ridiculous right) then they are liars. What I care about it the fact that they lie. If the Democrats had any balls, which they don't, there would be NO funding for the bush war and impeachment proceedings would have begun long ago. I seriously doubt that my country will ever recover from the damage done by the Bush dynasty.
