Rick Santorum Offers Up Some Racist Dating Advice

Posted by Tana Ganeva, AlterNet at 12:39 PM on June 2, 2009.

The Republican gave some dating advice, then took the opportunity to say that African-American men aren't interested in marriage.

Last night, Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., was tapped by Fox news to discuss the crucial, timely matter of Obama's Saturday night date. Santorum covered the relative advantages of various date destinations (Broadway or the corner bar?). He philosophically mused about what makes a marriage special (it's, in fact, the mundane!). And, he also took the opportunity to casually propagate some terrible racial myths and stereotypes (via Salon):

Number one, I think it's great that the president has a date night with his wife. He's a role model. He's a role model in particular, whether he likes it or not, in the African-American community.

And you have an African-American community, particularly in the poor inner city areas, we're looking at out of wedlock birthrates in three quarters to 75 percent (sic) of children being born out of wedlock. Marriage is an institution that's a bridge too far for too many African-American woman and is not desirable among African-American males.

I know this doesn't need explaining, but just for fun: Here Santorum taps into centuries-old stereotypes that paint black men as sexually deviant and irresponsible, and hence to blame for the existence of the black underclass (as opposed to blatant as well as structural racism, the lack of support for all poor people and families, a legacy of violence and discrimination, etc. etc.)

Marriage is an institution that is "not desirable" for African-American men? Really?

Santorum also slips up by saying "African-American women and men", without qualifying the statement with some sort of reference to class status -- thereby implying that African-Amercans are naturally averse to marriage, regardless of class, social status, or education. This also nicely dovetails with classic racist myths about African-American sexuality.

Anyway, nice to know that social conservatives can deeply embarrass themselves and the GOP even when talking about something as trivial as the President's date night.

Here's the rest of Santorum's wise take on modern relationships in case you need some dating advice:

I think he has to realize that flying to New York is self-indulgent. Go down to the corner bar and have a drink, a shot and a beer. It does not matter where you go with your wife, is that it's with your wife. That's really the point... I would make the argument, the simpler the date, the more normal it is.

It connects to people. Here is what you do. Here is how you do it. And it is not going to Broadway. All right, once in awhile, you do something special. But it is mundane that really makes the marriage special, but because you are with your wife the mundane isn't mundane. It's special.

Face it, he knows nothing about dating. Probably wasn't much fun back when he DID date. Rick is so scared that someone somewhere is having fun that he can't even concentrate. Analyzing a couple married for 20 years out on a date doesn't make sense. It speaks for itself. Alot of married women would have traded places with Michelle Obama
Saturday night. Rick should direct his remarks to the married men out there. ANNA

When we implement prejudice against one minority, we endanger everyone.

Santorum has been opposing same-sex marriage and bad-mouthing GLBTQ people for years.

Now he is going after people of color, with the same concepts and claims he directed at GLBTQ people. His job has been to test the waters for conservatives - what he gets away with at any point in time, becomes talking points later.

So, guess who's marriages will be put to the vote next?

Seriously now. The president can't go anywhere without a minor feat of security logistics and at least a small security entourage, it's just the way it is. So because of this he has to limit his recreation and entertainment to what he can walk to? What sort of fucktard logic is that?

Obama was on our TV last night(British) and he said that the things that gave him most pleasure was having an evening meal with Michelle and the girls and being a family together. What seems to enrage right wingers the most is that,"he is so damn normal!" how dare a black man act so white, they, no doubt would be happier if he was down in the Whitehouse garden smoking a joint with the secret service guys.

Afro American males have a high rate of being in prison (years for non violent crimes). Many of them just slave labor for industrial profit.

No prisons should be private or for profit. It encourages abuse. This might be why we have the largest population of prisoners in the world (more than China).

Afro American women are forced to raise the family on their own. If the males are in prison or can't support a family how do they marry?

It's hard to raise a family on low wages. Actually we see the high divorce rate and wonder why amoung all races.

"Marriage is an institution that's a bridge too far for too many African-American woman and is not desirable among African-American males."

I'm sure this has nothing to do with high unemployment numbers and the low probability of being able to financially support that family. No, it must be due to the lack of character in the black male. Feel better white America?

Living in a white man's world where women, particularly black woman, are not appreciated, nor loved fully--but consistently put down and abused and marginalized nearly from the day they are born. Having been through and seen what I've seen in the course of nearly 50 years on this planet, I have to say --and I don't uphold racism in any way, shape, form, or fashion -- but Santorum is right in saying that black men (ad majorum) are incapable of making a commitment to their wives and holding to it. He's right. In this particular case, it is not racist; it is a fact. But there are reasons for it that lean back into the American institution of racism AND personal defalcation on the parts of black men. In short, I have found that most of them are personally in default and error when it comes to making a marriage and how to make it work. Yes.

Has this President spent a full week in Washington since he took office? How is it that he wanted the job so bad, and now has problems with the security details?

This President believes he is king and that spending 650K to take himself and his wife to NYC is fine with his subjects, because he made a promise to her. Many would say it might have had something to do with the new article in Globe. Now that is a fine example of role modeling.

The job of the President is serious, he believes he is an American Idol, he is not. Mr. Obama should stay in Washington and do the job he was elected for, and save date night for when he foots the bill for 650K.

TWO QUICK OBSERVATIONS:
Posted by: AZLBRAX08 on Jun 3, 2009 6:39 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
1 - I'm just guessing, here, but I suspect that the percentage of US citizens getting married is probably dropping all the time…regardless of ethnicity…as people break free from "religious" bondage and realize that they don't need some sanctimonious twit's permission to choose to make a life together. Obviously being "legally" married doesn't make much of a difference: just look at the percentage of divorces!

2 - I'm all for the Obamas going out on a date. Hell, after 25 years, I still take my Beloved Mate out whenever we can afford it. Just one question, though: did Mr. Obama pick up the entire tab for his date…or, did the US taxpayers? The price of fuel for US1 to fly from D.C. to NYC and back must have been exorbitant!!!

Having Been a Santorum Constituent ...
Posted by: Brb007 on Jun 3, 2009 8:53 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
...for his entire tenure as a Senator, it is my humble opinion that this man is the epitome of a red necked, white supremacist, with the most archaic ideology that I have been witness too since the 60's.

While I admire his ability to father many children and keep his idyllic 1950's type nuclear family together in an almost picture perfect, Ozzie and Harriet public presentation, this man truly needs to get out of his bubble a bit more and experience the realistic environment and issues that face most average, blue collar families in America today.

He was not re-elected based on his out of touch ideas and his clinging to antiquated and unrealistic ideals for our great Commonwealth. He was not serving the people. He was too busy, up until his final moments in office and several years after the Bush Administration admitted there were no connections between Saddam and 911 OR WMDs, maintaining that Saddam was indeed in on 911 and did indeed have WMDs, which he just knew hadn't been found yet.

I am always amazed that the MSM find and use people like Santorum as their commentators. It seems that elected officials who are no longer worthy of election, crooks, white collar ex-cons and disgraced politicians seem to be their favorite choice for guests spots and/or anchor positions. When are we, as a country, going to EXPECT MORE from our media, our politicians and our Government?

I noticed a headline in one of the tabloids,

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
while I was at the supermarket today. There was a picture of Obama and behind that a picture of Michelle. The headline said something like, "Obama's GAY secret". My thoughts about that were that the Right Wing Wackos have spent the last 2 days WHINING about the Obama's date and now the tabloids are calling Barrack, GAY. So the only conclusion I can REACH is that it is GAY for a straight MAN to LOVE his OWN wife and children, to CONSIDER his family's FEELINGS and to SHOW his LOVE, AFFECTION and RESPECT for his wife in "public".
On the other hand, it's MACHO and MANLY to disrespect your wife, cheat on her, treat her like a slave, have no consideration for her in, or out of, the public EYE and to leave the "little woman" home with the "brats" while HE goes out on a drinking binge with his buds.
