Southwest Airlines is apparently now telling its female passengers how to dress. Kyla Ebbert was reprimanded and nearly kicked off a flight for daring to wear a tank top, miniskirt, and cardigan. (This picture is of the outfit she was wearing at the time. Scandalous, no? How dare she walk around in 100-degree weather wearing that?!)

They walked out onto the jet bridge, where [flight attendant/fashion policeman] Keith told Ebbert her clothing was inappropriate and asked her to change. She explained she was flying to Tucson for only a few hours and had brought no luggage.
"I asked him what part of my outfit was offensive," she said. "The shirt? The skirt? And he said, 'The whole thing.' "
Keith asked her to go home, change and take a later flight. She refused, citing her appointment. The plane was ready to leave, so Keith relented. He had her pull up her tank top a bit, pull down her skirt a bit, and return to her seat.
Guess we know what airline Wendy "Modestly Yours" Shalit is going to be flying from now on!

The San Diego Union-Tribune columnist clearly thinks Ebbert's treatment was unacceptable, but then he throws up his hands:

Who knows where the lines are drawn these days, particularly when it comes to dress? If you watch television, or visit the mall, or take in a game at Petco Park, you'll see women dressed in ways that, 50 years ago, were pornographic. Today they are stylish.

nutjobs, and angry feminists. Southwest was created, or at least, made successful by having alluring, nubile stewardesses in 'hot pants' and, initially, giving away free whiskey and drinks and encouraging a fun, festive atmosphere. And, businesswise, igoring 'hub and spoke' system, offering cheaper fares, and promoting a fun atmosphere. However, frequently criticised by angry feminists (as if the stewardesses were forced to work for Southwest) over the years the image, and value, has been toned down. No we get to the point that the deadly combination of religious nutjobs, closeted sexually repressed Republicans, and angry feminists have got airlines even forcing 'modesty' on passengers. We also have 'no low, sagging pants' regulations in some of our cities!! Personally, I would like to see EVERYONE, male and female, better dressed on airlines (jackets for men, no open toed shoes for men, dresses for women, and showering, brushing teeth, no brought on food for both) but I realise that's never going to happen.....

The article doesn't make it clear if the picture is actually of Ebbert, or of someone wearing the same outfit. If it is Ebbert, the totally frightened - terrified? - look on her face is very telling. Who knows how much power and authority rightwingnut, religious whackos assume they have. Maybe she was envisioning what her punishment might be.

i hope ms. ebbert went straight to the southwest desk when she arrived back home and made a report of this outrageous behavior! how dare that employee tell her what to wear! if the picture is truly representative of the outfit she had on, i can't see that it is in any way offensive, except perhaps to a member of one of the amish community. please! get a grip! i am not a fan of a lot of what i see people wearing, but this hardly reaches the nadir of immodesty that passes for female attire. somebody needs a reality check!

Ms. Ebbert's outfit is attractive if a little revealing. She's dressed like a casual Ann Coulter. Hey! does that mean we can have ANN thrown off the plane? Yeay!!!

One of the past joys of flying were the honnies. I remember being picked up by a Singapore Airlines attendent during a stopover in Hong Kong. She paid for everything. Then the feminists and the unions started to crack down. The haggered and the ugly were brought in. The uniforms became drab and unadventurous, and the whole flying experience became one of screaming children, stale farts and line-ups.

But at least the passengers could wear what they wanted. If the attendents couldn't be sexy, at least the passengers could. But this sounds grim and driven by a family-only agenda. Next time I fly on a private jet, I will make sure to let this lady know and we can pick her up and take her wherever she wants to go.

If I did that to my students (and many of my female students wear much more outrageous outfits) I'd get sacked-rightly. The steward's job is to get passengers seated and make sure safety regulations are followed. I cannot see how passenger safety can be threatened by a miniskirt. Was he afraid she'd give someone a heart attack? I sure hope that the company seriously reprimands him.

BEAUTY ASSAULT- mild form of rape

What few people know, and beautiful sexy women NEVER discuss because unfortunately (and I hope this changes) absolutely no one cares, is that beautiful sexy women are psychologically assaulted by strange men way too frequently. The man slams her about something that puts the man in a position of judgmental authority over her, to intimidate her and put her in a position of defensive subjugation, JUST SO HE HAS AN EXCUSE TO GET INTO HER AURA OF PERFUME AND BE CLOSE TO HER AND TALK TO HER. Decades ago when I was beautiful and sexy I even had a guy ram my car so I'd have to hang out with him and talk and wait for the police and he could learn my name and where I lived. I'm not kidding. Anyway, as I read this example of what people are pegging as a religious disgust with sexy beautiful women, I see it as Keith wanting to do a what I call a Beauty Assault-harassment crime against this woman. Since you can't make a law against it, but ALL female victims of this sort of in-your-face sadistic grab on women's dignity, space and right to BE, all you can do is call guys who do this creepy affront to women, some word that targets the truth of what they are, a label that signals what PREDATORY CREEPS they are, men who don't have the charm, respect, integrity or balls to meet a beautiful sexy woman, so he wants to emotionally punch her with a humiliation smackdown to get her attention. SICK. I’m tired of society focusing on the victims. Stay focused on the crazy male who is the Perp, and kick his ass. I hope the lovely young woman will never diminish her radiance and attractiveness to appease psychotic woman-hating/fearing males or religious nutballs, and that the noble men of our society will stand up for her and protect her right to be lovely.

you know, I once got incredible service from an airline...

I got on the aircraft with a sweater for a transAtlantic flight. Midway, I took my sweater off which apparently revealed the 'hidden' tie-dye Phil Lesh t-shirt.

Suddenly, the *entire* cabin staff became hostile.

I had one attendant snarl at me, because I had been sleeping & didn't immediately respond to her question.
...because I was sleepy & slightly hearing impaired...
She snarled, "what are you STONED?! STUPID? or just RUDE, where were you raised?!"

funny. when I was wearing the sweater, she treated me like gold.

you know what I've noticed?

That like during the Vichy Regime, the more dominated people perceive the reduction in their own Rights & Environmental Control... , the more intensely they seem to NEED to tell bystanders that they're dung...

aka, FOLLOW WHATEVER RULES & 'Values' I CAN DREAM UP...

have you NOTICED how **hostile** people are getting in service industries & simple social situations?

this social "CAPITULATE TO MY VALUES" crap has got to be addressed, & when I tell people to knock it off, they get absolutely crazy.

something to think about... the more HELPLESS some people feel, the more they tend to desire to dominate others...

Spread Love...
... but wear the Glove!

Taking the last joy out of Summer

The more I suffer in global warming induced hotter Summers, one of the few pleasures left for me is the way many attractive women dress this time of year. OK, call me a MCP, last I read it's still legal to look - as long as you don't lear. Anyway, I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of passengers on that flight would have had NO problem with the way she was dressed.

As was pointed out in the full version of the article, 30 years ago Southwest hired "sexy stews" (to steal from Mike Myers' Austin Powers character). So, this challenge of passenger dress is more than a little hypocritical.

this type of anti-freedom behavior should never go unpunished.
I hope you will write Southwest as I will and NEVER fly their airline.

Dress Codes on Planes is Ludacris

Who are we to tell people what to wear on a flight when we hardly see the people in their claustrophobic cubicles anyway? Nobody is walking up and down the runway putting on a fashion show. Clothing is clothing no matter how outrageous, and we see it all the time in public. There is nothing professional about a plane ride; it's supposed to be casual and laid back. Everyone is separating when they get off, and nobody even has to speak to each other. To ask someone to change or get off the flight and hop another, should be reported like it was. Who would actually fly that airline again? It's bad business for them when word gets out. I wouldn't have moved until the security came.

Business' Rights

A business has the right to refuse service to anyone, here however, I agree was a bit extreme, but it is still their right. Freedom of expression is not even an issue here, but the over reaction of the stewad, which is all that happened here, needs to be looked at again. I also think that people need to get off their soapbox screaming about rightwing nutjobs messing with their airlines. Who are you to immediately know that the steward was a "rightwing religous nutjob?
