Republican Governor Says the GOP Should Be 'Just Like Eminem'

Posted by Ali Frick, Think Progress at 9:58 AM on June 8, 2009.

Considering Eminem has been criticized for sexism and homophobia, perhaps he is already serving as a model for the conservative movement.

On Friday night, Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) gave the keynote address at the College Republicans National Convention. Perhaps seeking cache with his young audience, he referred to a stunt at the recent MTV Movie Awards, and suggested that the Republican Party should be “just like” the rapper Eminem:

Opening his remarks with a reference to NBC’s “Inside the Obama White House” special, Pawlenty told the gathering of about 200 students, “I haven’t seen something that staged since that half-naked Austrian fell onto the face of Eminem at the MTV music awards.”

“Eminem was mad,” he continued, to laughter and applause. “And so, just like Eminem getting dumped on, we’ve got to kind of regroup. We’ve got to continue to fight. And we’ve got some things worth fighting for.”

Considering Eminem has been criticized for sexism and homophobia, perhaps he is already serving as a model for the modern conservative movement.

Digg!

Be like Eminem? You mean put out the same exact album every time out? Yeah, the GOP does tend to repeat themselves. Especially if Palin is their candidate in '12, they will be exactly the same.

But yeah, this was a really poor attempt to try to show "the kids" you're still "hip". Trying to look cool and going against a party with a President as connected to pop culture as Obama is is a bad idea.

Nothing says Republican like being a drug addict, assaulting someone with your gun (and no bullets), being sued by your own mother, verbally abusing your wife and writing songs about brutally killing her.

Well.. at least his homophobia fits perfect with admitted Republican beliefs.

"“I haven’t seen something that staged since..."

Bush's carrier landing? Bush's photo-op serving plastic turkey to soldiers? The numerous similar media events with Bush?

Wasn't Eminem in on the joke?

So that means that the Republicans should go along with whatever Obama proposes. Sounds good to me.

Something like 9 out of 10 rappers have been accused thusly. Would you say all those rappers are "Serving as a model for the conservative movement"?

The GOP already IS like Eminem: not all that many people like or care about either one of them.

To change "Just like Eminen getting dumped on" to "Just like Emimem" is absolutely Rovian. Both Ali and Alternet can do a lot better than this shit.

Most of them are witless haters. They probably only listen to the mean parts of Eminem. I went back to college at 47 at UC Santa Barbara where there is a "nest" of them nearby at the Reagan Ranch. I learned there that they are vile, immoral, and corrupt human beings, and wield power in the party because Karl Rove took over the organization while HE was in college.
