Last November in D.C., I met former House Rep. and Senator Mike Gravel at a conference for PROGRESSIVE Christians.

He was calm, softspoken and funny.

In 1971, Gravel waged a successful one-man filibuster for five months that forced the Nixon administration to cut a deal, effectively ending the draft in the United States.

He is well known for his connection in the release of the Pentagon Papers, the secret official study that revealed the lies and manipulations of successive U.S. administrations that misled the country into the Vietnam War.

Gravel is an ardent supportor for direct democracy (The National Initiative), a national sales tax and abolition of the IRS, immediate withdrawal from the war in Iraq, and a single-payer national health care system.

After the democratic candidates debate and in a pre-emptive statement issued on March 16, CNN, WMUR TV and the New Hampshire Union Leader declared their intention to exclude Democratic Presidential candidate Mike Gravel from their tri-sponsored debate on June 3rd.

An online petition made a difference and on May 1st., Sen. Gravel was invited to join the June 3rd debate and has accepted.

No other currently declared Republican or Democrat has earned my consideration.

and think on his feet without a script and a transmitter in his jacket. It takes a sharp and nimble mind (and a sense of humor)--something we haven't seen for a long time in high office, but which are excellent attributes for a leader.

I don't own a television, so I can't see the debates (but strongly support streaming them, royalty-free) and thus wasn't very familiar with Gravel, but this session makes me want to know more.

Such a shame that the media already has written him off, putting Gravel and Kuchinch--the two most straightforward and sharp in the field--into the political limbo from which few return. Maybe if he too became a "contender" he'd become mush-mouthed and cautious, but I like what I hear right now.

That wasn't so much a debate but another press conference.
Gravel and Kucinich seemed to be the ONLY ones that actually have visions of ways to improve the status quo and not continuing with what I like to call "business as usual polictics".
The good ol boys/girls(for Mrs.Clinton) club served up the same back slapping bullshit. Reminded me of watching CSPAN in the House or the Senate.
Biden looked around and said "I see a bunch of winners". But there was mostly a bunch of weiners.
The GOP debate confirmed the pickins are slim. I really didn't expect much from the koolaid drinkers.
Gravel and Kucinch stood alone ready to make changes.
All the others just suck.
All the media hype that follows Obama and Hillary as the "front runners" is bogus. If you watched them both pander to the black community in Alabama with fake southern accents. It was like watching a televangelist testifyin'. Hillary with her southern sing song delivery or Obama using more "black"inflections both made me want to puke and the crowd still aplauded. Stupid is as stupid does.

Has everyone or shall I say, anyone, noticed that the major media news really only speaks of Clinton and Obama as Democratic Presidential hopefuls? Are you wondering why this might be?? If the media is controlled by conservatives and they are giving somewhat positive coverage to these 2 candidates, what does that mean? Me? I'm a little scared right now of these 2.

I agree that Gravel and Kucinich are terrific candidates, but take a look at Ron Paul also. He wants to repeal patriot act, get rid of federal reserve, CIA and IRS. He also wants our troops home yesterday.

First time I really saw him was on the debate. People laugh, but you know, he makes sense...a plain spoken man who not only tells it like it is but has a sense of humor, too!

A prior poster ( sorry, don't remember name ) is right. Gravel really held his own with Colbert. He sounds educated, too. Can you imagine Shrubya knowing anything about the Spartans ? ( except, perhaps Michigan State ! )

He may not have a popsicle's chance in hell, but he ( or someone like him ) may be just what our country needs right now.

Plus the fact, did you see him admit a couple of mistakes ? THAT alone puts him miles above Bush already.

This man is a breath of fresh air and I for one will give him some money just to hear him speak truth to the people. This is what it will take to get our country back and yes Kunisch and Gravel would be the best ticket we could have. Gravel is a little older but he has a mind 100 times sharper than our current idiot in chief .Of course MSM and the neocons will deny both men a platform but we have the Internet now. I think it made the difference in 2006 so lets do it for 2008.

Vote for whomever the polls suggest and you'll get more of the same: bought by and sold-out to the big corporate money slingers. If you seriously want to see change, and get rid of the DC back-slappers, then vote for a non-cookie cutter politician. Your choices are few, but these few can and will turn this country around, including healthcare, war, you name it!
