This is really beyond the pale. And really, if the “What election sexism?” Democrats can’t see how over-the-top this is, I don’t really know what to say.

Progressives should be better than this.* I haven’t been a Clinton supporter, but the misogynist crap she’s gotten throughout the election has made me a whole lot more sympathetic towards her. There are a lot of questions to raise and a lot of skepticism to be had about both Democratic candidates — we can do that without resorting to sexist and racist crutches. And we can cut the whole “She’s tearing the party apart!” nonsense. You know what tears the party apart? Insulting and attacking the party’s base by launching racist and sexist attacks. Drawing big fat lines between Clinton and Obama, as if either he or she were the bad guy — and in doing so, giving John McCain (the real bad guy) a great big pass.

For thoughts on sexism in the election in general, I refer you to Rebecca Traister and Amanda Fortini.

Contact the TNR editors (letters@tnr.com) and tell them to stick to the issues — not sexist caricatures.

Thanks to Linda for the link.

*And yes, I realize that TNR is not “progressive.” But it’s (pathetically) seen as moderate to left-leaning. And it’s only one example of the nasty misogynistic attacks that have been directed at Clinton.

others think that her sex is a liability.

are our genders relevant? biologically, quite. intellectually, yes, but with qualification. is this misogyny?

it's more about how 'i' see women/hillary than anything else, just as it is with everyone else's perceptions of women and hillary. misogyny? maybe. if you push it.

To what new low is Jill Filipovic even referring to? The article above doesn't make it clear. The TNR cover? The cover story? I read it and fail to see anything misogynist about it. Where did Filipovic's rant come from?

So many people keep spreading the lie that any one who doesn't like Hillary is a misogynist. Is that supposed to garner sympathy votes for her? See how far that weepy, teary "she's a victim" ploy gets you. That certainly won't win a vote based on "sticking to the issues."

(Similar lies: All those who dislike Obama are racists. All who like McCain are racists and misogynists.)

Guess what? Some us who don't like Hillary, dislike her for what she does and what she says. We make no gender-based dismissal of her. But if our valid criticisms of her and her campaign can't be refuted, then the tactic of her fans is to cry sexism, misogyny and chauvinism. Who's calling the most attention to her gender here, Hmm?

As for "insulting and attacking the party’s base", which candidate just insulted the 3 million strong, mostly Democratic stronghold of Moveon.org? It wasn't Obama, McCain or their supporters.

Misogyny?

Seems to me that the real misogyny is in thinking ANY and ALL criticism toward Clinton is Misogyny.

She's campaigned and acted like a complete jackass since losing the first "Super Tuesday". The most offensive and obvious was the comment about her and McCain being "ready" and Obama having a speech from 2002. There have been plenty more examples.

She's morphed a 30% lead and $160 Million into a losing campaign. That shows her leadership.

This isn't constructive. Stay in the campaign to talk about the issues or stfu.

Guess what? I don't like her and don't trust her and won't vote for her. I am a woman does that make me a misogynist? I don't think so, and it follows for anyone who feels the same about her including TNR writers!

I'm confused -- where is the sexism or gender-related slams in the microscopic thumbnail picture of Clinton shown here?

Since you provided no link to any other information, I can only assume you don't like the picture they chose? But what does that have to do with her gender?

It sounds to me like you're basically saying any criticism of Clinton is sexist.

What statements in particular from TNR are you talking about?

This article was basically a big waste of my reading time, and I've been one to call out any and all sexism in this campaign (hello, Chris Matthews, I'm talking to you!). I think we have to be very careful not to slide down the slippery slope of treating Clinton BETTER than a male candidate because she's a woman -- which is ALSO not a feminist position.

Both flags have been waved by the cheerleaders of each candidate and both of them miss the fact that there are a million reasons to like or dislike a candidate...while I think obama could use a bit more experience I believe Hillary's experience will lead the country in the same direction it has been going...sucking up to lobbyists to the detriment of the people.

While Obama may not seem to have a knockout punch to stop hillary, at least I know that as a biracial kid of a single mom, he is obviously able to fight successfully to get where he is today. While Hillary may be able to stand on her feet during a long fight I do not see people being willing to unify behind her, nor do I believe she has "earned" anything...it is called public service not public reward!

You're right: the fact that Clinton is a venal, conniving, delusional reprobate has nothing to do with her gender. But the fact that she is a woman does not mean that she can get away with anything, no matter how venal, conniving, and deslusional it may be. As a seasoned reprobate, she is using her gender, like everything, as a political ploy -and a means to an end.

If you think this is sexism than you are dismissing the main objection to Hillary. I don’t like the people and corporations she associates with and takes money from. I don’t like her intellectual judgment. I don’t like the lies the misrepresentations, the half-truths and the republican/Rove style politics Hillary endorses and carries out. It’s that simple!

what misogyny? How could you write a blog like this and not provide any examples? I mean, you talk about that one TNR article, but you don't provide any quotes or referenced passages from the article to prove your point. You also don't talk about any past examples of misogyny used against clinton. So, what are you talking about?

More blatantly obvious than the so called sexism at play in this election is Clinton's use of racism. Hillary's campaign has been ridiculously racist from Bill Clinton's "Jesse Jackson" comments in S. Carolina to Hillary's reminding people of Obama's connection with Farrakhan and Rev. Wright. Do you realize the only reason to bring up Farrakhan is to cause white people to be scared of Barack because he's black? It's true. Why else would she do that? I'm sorry, but Barack has been discriminated against way more than Hillary during this campaign. Also, Barack has nothing to do with the sexism being used against Hillary. However, Hillary is fully supporting and pushing for the racism being used against Barack.

When she is running a vicious, devious, and DLC-led campaign that has stopped short of nothing ... let's review: her spreading the rumors that Obama might be a Muslim, her insinuating that McCain would be a better President than Obama, her hypocritical ties with the corporatists Mark Penn, Wal-Mart, etc. Unbelievable! and I'm supposed to instead of looking at the important issues: like her shameful refusal to apologize for her vote to authorize the invasion and now occupation of Iraq or her now incredibly destructive hawkish rhetoric of bomb-bomb'ing Iran to basically continue Bush's militaristic idiotic policies? Instead of looking at those things, you want ME to focus on some silly "mysogyny" non-event? You have reached a new low, my friend. You should be ashamed of yourself!

who listened to Hillary on Olbermann's show on Monday night. He followed up with a question later for clarification to be sure he had heard her correctly when she said, or implied, she would use nuclear weapons against Iran and risk WWIII if they attacked Israel. I heard her comments, and I interpreted it the same way, as did the other commentator on Olbermann. Am I a misogynist for saying that a woman this irresponsible and reckless is not fit to be president? Am I a misogynist for saying that a woman who runs ads designed to scare people or that indirectly imply Americans are cowards who should vote for her to feel safe is a despicable human being in the same mold as Bush or Rove? If so, then I am a misogynist who will urge Obama to run and win as an Independent candidate if Hillary and her lapdog husband get the nomination from the Democratic Party. (Also, I wish the pundits would quit saying Hillary won in Texas. She lost Texas under their primary system!)

Hillary has carried states she was expected to carry, but not the ones she thought she would. The four state area of the NE - NY, NJ, PA, and OH - are all similar in demographics and it is her primary place of residence. They traditionally vote a straight party ticket in her demographic groups no matter who the candidate is, so who wins in a primary does not reflect how they will vote in a general election. California is always a battleground, but these 5 states do not make up the balance of the country and how they vote in primaries does not reflect how they vote in general elections. Hillary's continued presence in this race is dividing this party into two feuding portions, with those undecideds getting increasingly disgusted with both candidates, which is exactly what Hillary wants. Her attitude now is destroy the party so that she can act as the great healer in 2012, and let McCain win in 2008. Even McCain supporters were routing for Hillary yesterday in PA because they know she will divide the party and is easy to beat come November.

If what I have just written is misogynistic, then so be it. But it is based on observation and fact, so I guess even the truth is misogynistic in this country now because the Clinton's say it is!
