Shocking: "Keep Your Legs Crossed, Sluts" Sex-Ed Strategy Fails

Posted by Jill Filipovic, Feministe at 8:41 AM on December 30, 2008.

The U.S. government has spent more than $1.5 billion on abstinence programs. What a terrible waste.

Shockingly, the "Keep your legs crossed, sluts!" sex-ed strategy is an epic failure.

Teenagers who pledge to remain virgins until marriage are just as likely to have premarital sex as those who do not promise abstinence and are significantly less likely to use condoms and other forms of birth control when they do, according to a study released today.

The new analysis of data from a large federal survey found that more than half of youths became sexually active before marriage regardless of whether they had taken a "virginity pledge," but that the percentage who took precautions against pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases was 10 points lower for pledgers than for non-pledgers.

I suppose abstinence-only education has one thing going for it: It threatens that sex will bring disease and unwanted pregnancy, and for abstinence-pledgers, that threat is more likely to be realized.

The U.S. government has spent more than $1.5 billion on abstinence programs. A lot of that money goes to local anti-choice and religious groups, which provide curriculums telling students that sex tears the petals off of their beautiful roses and that AIDS is spread by sweat and tears. Let’s hope Barack Obama cuts off that gravy train quick.

Digg!

Guess what, people learn it on their own. Pamphlets are an effort to prevent people from learning about sex in the first place. It's a fools errand and a waste of money. ANNA

... you know who to invite to the party if you want to party hardy.

Look to the promise ring boys. Look to the promise ring.

And to be a total pig, given the creep factor in things like virgin balls, it is likely that 'daddy' has already broke her in for you.

Right is Refractory to Reason

Evidence has been accumulating for more than a decade that ignorance-based sex education is ineffective, but that hasn't kept the religious right from demanding it. The sorts of people who think the universe is 6000 years old, that humans and dinosaurs co-existed and that George W. Bush is a good president are obviously refractory to reason, quite gullible and subject to manipulation. Televangelists and Republican strategists figured that out a long time ago.

What these Holy rollers want these kids to believe is that they are the ONLY generation who ever considered sex before marriage.Please.
Considering the Age of these 'virgin Pledges'. Let's see about the Teenage years in the '70's,Before AIDS. Being 45, I assure you that generation was screwing it's brains out, smoking Pot daily and Trippin' to Led Zeppelin.
What I find hyterical is listening to friends of 30+ yrs pretend they were so Pious when talking to their kids. Esp since I know better, and remember their 'Great White Buffalo' one night stand.
But at that point pregancy could be averted, STD's curable and marriage beginning to not be a forelong conclusion.
If parents want to truely save their Children any 'heartache' they encountered at that age, they MUST be honest. If they want to dissuade them from using Drugs, tell them Real life experiences. If they want to possibly Save their Lives from disaster from either Sex or Drugs, they had better arm them with enough information to be useful..'No' may cut it with toddlers but Only 'Why' can cut it with Teenagers.
My daughters Grandfather is a Product of an Unwed Mother.so laying such a harsh judgement about pre marital sex only casts an Unflattering Light upon her Great Grandmother. That information was helpful in spring boarding into the conversation about sex.An Uncle was a herion addict, this opened up the conversation about drug use...Again with humane Logic, Not persecution.
Parents have relinquished all such conversations to the Educational system or the Church....This does not build an Interpersoanl relationship with your child, It only creates distance.
If you want your kids to Be Honest, Then, as Parents, You must be Honest.Try sharing some of your less 'Stellar' life experiences with your kids, they need to know your are only Human too.

This is actually comical. This administration has once again attempted, through its' own arrogance, to alter the course of human history, with money, mistruths and an adherence to a false allegiance to "morality". How many other misguided actions can they perpetrate? Boys will be boys and girls will always make sure the boys know it.

I am disgusted with this total waste of tax money which is being used to fund religion and the Republican mis-education of children! The Focus on the Family empire which has a base here in South Carolina known as the Palmetto Family Council has just announced that they have received $1.5 million of our tax dollars to fund more of this insanity. I thought that these Republican fools could at least teach their own children about sex rather than having America fund it! Is there a new definition of "conservative" for Republicans?! I have written Senator's Jim DeMint, Lindsey Graham and Congressman Wilson to stop this total waste of money. I'm still waiting on a response!

It's all emotional blackmail

This issue and many others are being driven by emotional blackmail.

You don't want abstinence only education for your kids? Obviously you are pro-promiscuity.

Refuse to support pro-life policies? Then you must be for late term abortions for all.

You don't think the Humane Society of the United States should be making animal laws? You must be an animal abuser.

It's a pretty long list; these are only the ones that spring immediately to mind. Any time you are given only 2 choices on an issue, you can figure you're being railroaded into giving up more civil rights and more control over your life. Ang the more emotional weight attached to the 'undesirable' choice, the harder you should look at it.

Just say no to emotionally driven policies and politics.

Planned Parenthood -- another scam using our money

Just saw this -- another unncessary use of
our tax money:

Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, made over $1 billion in income during the 2006-2007 fiscal year, according to its annual report. The non-profit group went from an income of $972 million in 2005-2006 to $1.017 billion this past year. Planned Parenthood said the increase “highlights our advancements in providing and protecting trusted healthcare services and medically accurate sexuality education.”

The report reveals that Planned Parenthood is performing more abortions now than ever. In 2005, Planned Parenthood provided 264,943 abortions, and in 2006, it was up to 289,650. In addition, the organization’s “excess of revenue over expenses” funds doubled from $55.7 million in 2005 to $112 million the following year.

Planned Parenthood also admits receiving more than $336 million in government grants and contracts from the state and federal levels.

abortion has dire effects for women

How about these studies? Women are not
being told the truth about abortion and
the harmful aftereffects"

Thomas Strahan, a researcher with the Association of Interdisciplinary Research, recently reviewed over 26 studies relating to abortion's impact on the socio-economic status of women.
These studies show the following:

Women who have had abortions are at greater risk of suffering emotional and psychological problems which may interfere with their ability to concentrate, make decisions, and interact with others, thereby reducing their level of job skills and employment opportunities.

Post-abortion women are more likely to engage in drug and alcohol abuse, often as a means of "numbing" negative feelings stemming from the abortion. This will in turn effect their ability to function in the workplace and may inhibit their ability to enter into meaningful relationships.

Women who have had abortions are more likely to become pregnant again and undergo additional abortions. Nearly 50% of all abortions are repeat abortions. These repeat abortions do not represent "satisfied customers." Instead, post-abortion women often seek replacement pregnancies to make up for the aborted child, but find themselves faced with the same social pressures which led to the first abortion. There is also evidence that some women undergo repeat abortions as an act of "self-punishment" or as attempt to "harden" themselves to negative feelings stemming from their first abortion.
Compared to their peers, teenagers who have had one abortion are 4 times more likely to have a subsequent abortion. Almost 20% of teen aborters have a second abortion within a year, and 38% have a second abortion within 5 years.
Women who have had abortions are more likely to subsequently require welfare assistance, and the odds of going on welfare increase with each subsequent abortion.

Women who have repeat abortions tend to have an increasing number of health problems and greater personality disintegration, which increases the likelihood of their needing public assistance.

Post-abortion women have greater difficulty establishing permanent relationships with a male partner. They are more likely to never marry, more likely to divorce, and more likely to go through a long string of "unsuccessful" relationships. This inability to form a "nuclear family" reduces household income and increases the probability that the woman and her children will require public assistance.

Women who have had repeat abortions are more likely to desire children and are likely to carry one or more subsequent "replacement" pregnancies to term. This means that many repeat aborters end up becoming unmarried mothers, the very fate they tried to avoid when they had their first abortion. Only now, they also have to deal with post-abortion psychological and emotional scars.
These studies lead Strahan to conclude that "the repeated utilization of abortion appears to lead not to economic prosperity or social well-being, but to an increasing feminization of poverty."

In light of the evidence, it is hard to see how abortion has served to empower women. It has not made them richer, or happier, or more successful. Indeed, it has served mainly to achieve all of the opposite effects.
Yet abortion will continue to be defended as a "woman's right" because it is such an important political symbol of the emancipated woman's right to "control her own body."

Perhaps it's time to worry less about the symbolism of legal abortion and more about its reality. Abortion does not free women. It simply enslaves them in a new way.
