After being caught in the racist slur of calling Spanish a "ghetto" language, Newt Gingrich tried to correct the record. "What I meant is," said Gingrich speaking to FOX News' Alan Colmes,"we ought to have a program of intensive education so that every person who comes to America learns English as rapidly as possible." Gingrich then went on to explain in his inimitable pedantic way that "ghetto, historically had referred as a Jewish reference originally. I did not mention Hispanics, and I certainly do not want anybody who speaks Spanish to think I'm in any way less than respectful of Spanish or any other language spoken by people who come to the United States" (Think Progress has the whole story).

What a shandeh this Gingrich remark.

The problem with Gingrich's example is that it gets the history of the Jewish ghetto completely wrong--backwards even. Historically, Jews who lived in the first ghettos did not suffer the social stigma brought on by a lack of language education, but from the political consequences of too much language skill.

Most scholars agree that the word "ghetto" originates with the 16c Ventian verb gettare meaning "to cast" (as in foundry casting of iron)--as such because the first Jewish ghetto in Venice was located on an island that once housed iron casting factories.

Rather than complain about the Jews' inability to speak the local languages, authorities in the vicinity those original Italian ghettos often complained that the Jews were fluent in too many languages--that they were nervous about being able to control the Jews because they were much better at language than the local population. It wasn't until the 18c when people started to accuse Jews of not being able to function in society because they couldn't speak the local tongue (German).

In other words, if we follow Newt's example of the Jewish ghettos, the moral of the story should not be that foreigners need help learning languages, but that the immigrants among us are actually smarter at language than the rest of us.

And this makes sense. After all, to function in a new country, immigrants have to work twice as hard as the rest of us to keep up linguistically--often times being fluent in a minimum of two languages.

If Newt had spent even 5 minutes in an immigrant community in America he would discover himself completely at the mercy of a group of polyglots much more capable than the average American. Being an immigrant, in fact, is most often synonymous with language fluency as rapid language facility is often the key to Immigrants being able, in a relatively short period of time, to function in two cultures simultaneously--to hold a job, navigate a new set of laws, and so forth.

Sorry, Newt. It looks like you are obviously not smart enough to think these things through.

Maybe the former Speaker of the House is the one who needs some education to bring him up to speed--not the immigrants that he is so desperately trying to smear as somehow lacking the education to function in American society.

Maybe we should propose night classes for Republicans so their racism at least has some sound logic behind it?

Hey, Newt, gotcha, gotcha, gotcha! Of course it took a tortured revision of common usage to show that Hispanics do not have ghettos to do it, but, I'm sure we got ya.

Groan.

In my many years of working side by side with recent immigrants (mostly Central American, but now often African), I have never ceased to be amazed at the willingness they generally show towards rapidly adopting the English language. Not to mention their capacity for switching between their native tongue(s) & ours. These are adults, mind you, well past the age considered ideal for adopting a new set of language rules (i.e. the first few years of life). One woman I work with is fluent in Arabic & French, & in the roughly one year we have been co-workers has come damn close to being fluent in English as well. For instance, she's fascinated by the English catch-all slang word, "yeah", & we often discuss it's myriad usages.

Certainly, there are exceptions. Some people have "hang-ups" about learning a new language, regardless of how necessary it might be to their chances at success. Gee, I probably could be counted among these people, since I was once on my way towards being fluent in Spanish, but haven't done much recently to brush up on my skills! One could argue that, as a Foodservice worker, I'm hurting my career with my laziness in this area...

The bottom line here is that people like Gingrich are dead wrong. Their fear of change is blinding them to a basic reality;
People who are recently arrived in this country are already involved in an "immersion language program", so using this concept as a litmus test for citizenship (& one would presume future weapon against it, based on arbitrary "compliance" guidelines?), seems highly suspect. It's setting up yet another hoop for immigrants to jump through- only problem is, they already have.

He was talking about COMMUNAL SEGREGATION from the larger culture/group

Gingrich was talking about the COMMUNAL SEGREGATION practices used by Jews, Hispanics, etc. throughout history.

Historically, these people (if living in a diaspora situation) have historically imposed 'ghetto' walls around themselves and their communities in order to maintain group solidarity, a way to keep their communities 'pure' and prevent them from being 'soiled' by 'outsiders.' There are even still today MANY neighborhoods in Florida, New Jersey, or New York (state & city) that many people would call 'Jewish ghettos,' i.e. neighborhoods in which upwards of 90% or more of that area's population is Jewish. Ditto w/ Hispanics, Blacks, and others.

Jewish ghettos in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Venice as mentioned were far from being the crime-ridden, drug infested places we imagine when we hear the word 'ghetto' today -- in fact, in most cases these ghettos and the people in them were more prosperous than the surrounding communities.

Remember when he said women soldiers can't be in combat because they get "infections"? What he calls an infection is what the rest of us call a menstrual period. How about the time he said "the right to bear arms" was the reason Poland was able to free itself from the communist yoke? While it was under Soviet domination, no average Polish citizen was allowed to own a gun. It was strictly nonviolent protest which ended communism in Poland. For someone with a Ph.D., Newtie can be off-the-chart stupid.

WHY IS AMERICA AFRAID TO LEARN NEW LANGUAGES?
Posted by: thetruth07 on Apr 6, 2007 1:49 AM

People in countries worldwide speak more than one language. We know that English is the main language of the U.S., but why are we so stubborn to not want to learn different languages? I don't get it. If everything is supposed to be going "global" then what's the harm in learning more than one language?

BE is not a method whereby a student is taught Spanish instead of English. BE is a method of getting someone who knows nothing of English and becoming better at reading, writing and speaking the language. Unfortunately, in some places, I mean school districts, this very thing has not been taught accordingly. Instead some teachers have been guilty of instructing with too much emphasis on speaking, learning, writing, Spanish correctly.

In short, the abusers of this program have created a negative impression of what just BE is supposed to achieve. I wish my wife were here to provide more clarity on this point, she is in fact a BE teacher with a Master's degree who is more qualified to provide an opinion.
