The road to World War III

Posted by Jeffrey Feldman at 9:00 AM on April 19, 2006.

As nuclear war becomes casual conversation, concerned Americans should talk about finding a "new road" to avoid "World War III"

This past weekend, I watched the Chris Matthews show in horror as a guest panel of high-paid journalists chit-chatted about an American nuclear strike against Iran. Is it good timing or bad timing for a nuclear strike? Is a nuclear strike legal? Is it appropriate? Would it cause political harm or raise political capital? Do it now? Do it later? The discussion was so casual, a viewer tuning in midway could have easily mistaken it for a conversation about mah-jongg or golf. Nuclear war, bandied about with a complete lack of gravitas, and without so much as a hint of concern about a White House frozen in the headlights of its own runaway foreign policy.

The key point left unstated by Chris Matthews" guests: A nuclear strike against Iran will crash America and the Middle East head on into World War III.

And that is exactly what Iran seems to want.

The "Road" To World War III

The missing frame from the current discussion of Iran' uranium enrichment program is precisely this idea of World War III. Before it is too late, Americans must join together and move the debate to this new frame, which has two key elements.

The idea that the Bush Administration is "heading down a road" or "driving in the wrong direction" is a basic and clear idea that must be repeated. So far, the debate on Iraq, and by extension on Iran, is caught in a vague discussion about "plans" and "policies." We are on the wrong highway, and it is time to get off. Whether we are Democrats or Republicans or somewhere in between or outside those two categories, we can all agree that the road our foreign policy is driving down will not get us where we want to go.

I want to emphasize this point: That U.S. foreign policy is on the wrong road is not a partisan issue.

The second element of this frame is the phrase "World War III," which must now be used in the media and in political debate in order to focus people's attention on what is really happening in the world. Again, this is not a partisan issue.

When discussing Iran, we must as a nation be willing to stand up and say, "We will not be led down the road to World War III."

The band of U.S. generals that have recently called for Donald Rumsfeld to resign have not been as effective as they could be because they did not frame their criticisms using the "road" metaphor and by invoking the specter of World War III.

What does this mean in actual debate language?

It means that when we are asked to consider the situation in Iran, concerned Americans should respond by saying, "Look, if U.S. foreign policy continues down this road then we are headed for World War III." Plain and simple.

The alternative is to keep talking about nuclear war as if it is something normal and casual--which appears to be the approach taken by the likes of Chris Matthews.

In our America, we should never allow nuclear strike to be discussed as if it is something other than the most horrific possible action. And since the press, the Congress and the White House have already veered off course on this debate, it is the responsibility of citizens to drive the debate back to solid moral ground.

What is being missed here is that W. has roped in his lackey Manmohan Singh, the prime minister of India, into his insidious plan to bomb Iran. Just yesterday the Indian PM made noises about India not wanting another "nuclear power in its neighbourhood".
With Pakistan already in the US bag, a nuke strike on Iran is now all the more a real possibility.
The fireworks are not too far off, folks. Enjoy the show!

Has anyone factored in the Chinese and Russian nuclear response? I’m not hearing about the Asian coalition formed after the first gulf war that rivals that of NATO. If you mistakenly think just a simple puff of bombs into Iran will be all there is to this think again. The Chinese and Russians if we can remember back a few years ago to their remarks and declarations of retrofitting weapon systems. The Russian statements of a leaner meaner missile offensive strike capability second to none. The Chinese just two years after the first gulf war telling us of advanced anti ship missiles and torpedoes that put their antiship missiles used in the Falklands in the realm of slings and stones. These and other comments spread over a few years and considered alone are nothing. But put them together under a coalition of countries stepped on spit at and in your face treatment from the USA and get a very mean bunch of hatred. Now add in a few side options of China holding a huge amount of United States treasury bonds. That can be used to knock credit card Joe off his feet and well the picture gets a little more realistic. All that is needed is to gloat someone into a corner say maybe Iran running its mouth off to a fool set in his ways and poof no more arrogant USA.

Maybe the Bush administration wants to destroy the world by means of World War III, so that they won't look so bad when it's destroyed by global warming. (either way, they're to blame!)

You people are crazy.

The leader of the U.S., Russia, China, etc... must have a strategy for any situation. This idiot from the New Yorker who published the info on Nuking Iran had such little info on the plan, and of course the Sharks that are in the media turned it into "George W. is going to nuke Iran". I also think people forget who we are dealing with hear. Mr. Ahmadnejad is an irresponsible leader, who has made outlandish statements about Israel, and the U.S. We need to keep a close eye on what he is doing, and if he will not let the international community see that his nuclear intentions are peaceful, we should assume they are not. If again, the international community will not, we should go it alone.

Knowing what I know from the past regarding radical Islam, if we wait for them, we will keep waiting with no resolve and only violence. Nuclear War is no joke. However if they get it we will end up there anyhow. There is no negotiating, with them. Iraq's 27 resolutions proved this. Will it take 100 Iran resolutions and a mushroom cloud over Tel Aviv, or NYC for everyone to wake up?

Hello I am new here and wanted to say Hi.
Now back to what every one is discussing.
Well, the way I see it is “Dammed if we do Dammed if we don’t.”

We will be at War with Iran, but I would hope that before that happens the Bush administration waits and builds a strong collation with our Allies around the world.
I am also concerned what the Russians and Chinese will do if we attack Iran’s Nuclear program.

Contingency planning is one thing, what Bush is doing is another.

Consider: After having trashed the Non-proliferation Treaty, Bush has had us developing new bunker-buster nukes that are "relatively low-yield, and therefore safe for civilians". Yeah - like the new mercury levels are 'safe'. Also consider: the propaganda out of Washington and their pet media outlets almost precisely matches the runup to the Iraq invasion. And aside from being unable to pronounce the power source of the weapons, BUSH IS TOO STUPID TO UNDERSTAND THE DANGERS, he won't listen to "reality-based" facts regarding physical or geopolitical consequences, and he needs a boost to keep what he sees as his "War President" place in history.

BUSH - DOESN'T - LISTEN - TO - FACTS. He thinks they are susceptible to spin like everything else. He thinks nukes are 'just another weapon, but bigger'; he'll blithely push The Button, then be totally surprized at the results.
