Are Men Smarter Than Women? They Sure Seem to Think So

Posted by Jeff Fecke, Shakesville at 12:03 PM on January 28, 2008.

A new study says that men over-estimate their own intelligence and under-estimate the intelligence of women.

Here's some news that will stun none of you:

Are men smarter than women? No. But they sure think they are. An analysis of some 30 studies by British researcher Adrian Furnham, a professor of psychology at University College London, shows that men and women are fairly equal overall in terms of IQ. But women, it seems, underestimate their own candlepower (and that of women in general), while men overestimate theirs.

Furnham studies perceived intelligence, and it unsurprisingly shows men overestimate their smarts and underestimate the smarts of women, and women do too. Furnham says, "Men are more confident about their IQ. These studies show that on average, women underestimate their IQ scores by about five points while men overestimate their own IQs. Since these studies were international in scope, the results were essentially the same whether women were from Argentina, America, Britain, Japan or Zimbabwe."

Does this surprise anyone? It shouldn't. Women in most societies spend their lives being told that they are simply not as capable as men, while men spend their lives being told that they are leaders and doers. Of course people think men are smarter than women. It's the definition of prejudice -- people buy into the notion that men are superior at everything except cleaning and taking care of the home and the kids. (Even that notion is meant not to buoy women, but to demean the very difficult and important job of cleaning and taking care of the home and the kids.) This feeds into our warped concepts of gender norms, and causes women and men alike to devalue the ability of women to compete in the workforce. Another big win for the patriarchy.

Only if we keep chipping away at this bigotry, one teaspoon at a time, will we reach the just and fair future, where men and women see themselves as they are, where men do not over- or underestimate women, and women don't either.

Girls outnumber boys in the following areas: National Honor Society, Phi Beta Kappa, College attendance, Medical and Law school, just for openers. The disparity continues to grow and was recently referred to as a "crisis" among young males. Girls discovered school. Does that mean we should get all smug and arrogant? No. But we should give credit where credit is due. Now, beat up on me. Thanks, ANNA

I bet the same dynamic that takes place between the estimated intelligences of women and men takes place between those people of, say, the Third World and Americans. Americans probably overestimate their own intelligence relative to the general intelligence of those uneducated brown masses of the developing world. The same probably would be true between different races, ethnicities, income levels, political persuasions, etc.

we [males] were beaten over the head with women are smarter and more mature. had a feminist (i assume) professor that treated the females with more respect. males asked a question and received a why did you ask that dumb question type attitude. females ask a question it was the most intelligent question ever. few days later i dropped the class. later on dropped of school. i could go on but i know the type of crowd im dealing with so why bother.

Yes, well I have nice a penis and two testicles. I am a male Homo sapien. I would like to just say that I do not think males are smarter, OK? When people say males think X about fill-in-the-blank I often find myself in disagreement with what it is they are saying I believe.

It's no win for society when women are better able to compete in the workforce

"This causes women and men alike to devalue the ability of women to compete in the workforce."

An equally fundamental problem in our society to misogyny and sexism is a competitive and privatized workforce. The drive for money and prestige in the workforce leads to many ills, such as an unlivable minimum wage, staggering inequality, rising work hours, the breakdown of families and communities, an increasingly inactive and unhealthy population, and stressful lives which leave no time for engagement in political and community affairs, as well as creating a cultural environment ripe for nationalism, prejudice, and social isolation.

The very concept "competing in the workforce" signifies a massive social ill that faces us as gravely as misogyny. In my opinion, the changes brought on in part by feminism over the years have led to a privileged class of women who succeed in a corrupt workplace environment, and has not done enough to challenge this massive social ill. This article, to me, is a shining example of this flaw.

It's analogous to social work vs. social organizing; or firefighting vs. fire prevention. The former are both really important, but nothing will change unless we engage in the latter.

...who doesn't think women should even vote because fewer repugnicants have been elected since women got the vote. By all accounts and healthy book sales this woman is intelligent but she has no problem promoting the idea that a woman's place is in the home, subservient to her husband who obviously has the better judgment.

This is just one variation on the theme and one which hopefully lies at the far end of the spectrum but it is very relevant to the presidential elections this year. Just because progressive women are ready for a woman president, have been ready for a long time, doesn't mean that this applies to all women.

The problem is that both men and women don't understand that in this respect they're both being "played". They're manipulated into the situations because they are game pieces. And most don't even recognize they are being used.

WHEN MY FIRST WIFE WAS DIEING FROM SILICONE BREAST IMPLANTS

we did a SPECT-PET scan of her brain. We, they, found that the brain stem was oxygen starved. I asked her doctor what that really meant right now. He answered, "It will probably reduce her IQ by 20 points." While I was digesting that he added, "Don't worry that will still leave her smarter than you are."

I never was dumb enough to disagree. She died in 1999.

Who is the dumber sex?

Think about it...dumb men get smarter women to marry them all the time. The women become their sex slave, waitress, mother, accountant, bill paying service, cook and bottle washer, maid, nanny, whipping post, errand girl, etc., all for no pay.

All that the women get out of it is a constant yeast infection, a bunch of kids, loss of bone density, fat and a lot of lip.

Now, 'splain to me which one is dumber again?
