According to a Daytona Beach News-Journal article, via Pam, a woman walked into a doctor's office, was checked out by a physician's asst. as her regular doctor wasn't around, and left with "literature condemning homosexuality as 'sinful and sexually impure.'"

Her sexuality was in her file but if the physician's assistant used that information to push her personal non-medical agenda then I've got to agree with Pam when she writes: "Some licenses need to be revoked in this case. There's nothing else to it."

When she opened up an envelope Pope-Wright left at the checkout counter, she was shocked to find photocopied pages including Bible verses that denounced homosexuality and asserted God can help her change. "The information that Ms. Pope-Wright gave to Ms. Beiler was derogatory and offensive, and completely disrespected her right to dignity and privacy," the complaint says.

It's also important to point out that another doctor "deflected Beiler's concerns when she complained to the office."

In other news of the intersection of medical/pharmaceutical incompetence and American talibanism, three women are suing Wal-Mart for refusing to stock the morning after pill in their pharmacies.

(Special thanks to this CNN article for drinking at the right wing framing trough and calling the women's backers "pro-abortion rights groups"-- fools. The Washington Post version of the same AP report calls them "abortion rights groups."). (Pam's House Blend)

The American Taliban

With laws recently proposed in several red-neck, fundamentalist hate-mongering states that would make it legal for pharmacists and doctors to refuse to fill presecriptions based on their "moral beliefs" and allow doctors to refuse to perform certain medical procedures that they find "immoral" (such a fertilization of lesbians), it is no surprise to me that some doctor's office receptionist is handing out homophobic literature to patients. If these laws pass, you will begin to see signs posted on doctors' office doors that read: "Homosexuals Will Not Be Treated Here". Progressives should start using the talking point "American Taliban" repeatedly to describe these bigots everytime they try to push their agenda down our throats. If it works for Rove, it should work for us too.

Deja Vu

I was blessed by having two progressive, sexually liberal parents as I grew up in the 50's. As I went from 6 to 16 they were there to guide me in sexual matters and make me aware of the crazy way America dealt with sex. For those who are younger please understand this was an era that was awash with sexual hypocrisy and repression. Gay bars were regularly raided and harassed by police. Oral (and other forms of) sex, both hetero & homo was criminalized in most states, even among married adults. Great author's (James Joyce, Henry Miller, DH Lawrence, etc.) were banned because of sexual content in their books. Inter-racial relationships could lead to ones death.

All this was being done under the rubric of Christian morality, or to save innocent children. Behind all of this repression was the need to repress women, to demonize homosexuals, oppress people of color and control the masses. While people of ordinary means found it nearly impossible to divorce and/or get abortions, the wealthy elite screwed as they wished, with little public approbrium.

Beyond their greed and lust for power, the faux conservatives and the fanatic fundamentalists are children of the 50's, like me. They long for those "halcyon" days when things seemed so simple and morality appeared concrete. I believe too, that they require this repression because they need assistance in suppressing, or feel loathing for, their own desires.

Karl Rove appears to be gay. Ann Coulter would no doubt be comfortable in Nazi drag whipping some recalcitrant slave. Connie Mack is having an adulterous affair with the ex mrs. Bono.

Can we doubt that an administration and party that bathes themselves in political hypocrisy, has been trying to drown their own sexual longings via repressing others? By giving credibility to a venal and power hungry Christian rightwing minority, who in fact blaspheme the teachings of Jesus, they encourage people to behave like that nurse.

It is so sad that the arena of public discourse has taken such an awful, hard-hearted viewpoint. I have been on this site for a week and hearing terms like Nazis, bad guys, sexually repressed are so completely unconstructive.

This is the truth. This article wants to make it illegal for Christian professionals to actually LIVE OUT their faith. Why is that? Couldn't one always go to a liberal doctor? Liberals live out their secularism (no less a religion) and raise hell if anyone stomps on their civil liberties. If you were drafted in the army and had to serve on a firing squad, would you expect that you would be excused from the duty because of your moral position on the Death Penalty. The example is congruent. You don't have to embrace or agree with Christianity, but you cannot, according to the Constitution (life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness...oh yeah, and freedom of religious expression), tell a person how he may or may not live out that faith. It is as draconian as the alleged enemy you seek to defeat.

As for Wal-Mart, while I am not the biggest fan of the pirate of retail, the fact remains that Wal-Mart recognizes that carrying the morning after pill, would alienate a HUGE sales base...low to middle income conservatives. In a democratic, free-market society (free-market...you know, like organic coffee) a retailer has the right to run their business any way they want and to refuse service to ANYONE. Its the American way.

Hitler's "doctor death" tried (unsuccessfully, of course) to "cure" people of having brown eyes.
