CBS censors Bill Maher

Posted by David DeGraw at 3:41 PM on September 18, 2006.

When Bill Maher wanted to discuss religion on a CBS News segment ironically titled 'Free Speech,' they said it was a "deal-breaker" and they would send over a list of "acceptable topics."
Bill Maher: CBS 'free speech' BS

In the video clip to the right, Bill Maher discusses what happened when he was invited to speak on a new CBS Evening News segment called 'Free Speech.' As it turned out, according to Maher, his comments on religion don't fall under their view of free speech.

Bill Maher: "Well, I asked if I could talk about religion, and that was a deal-breaker right from the beginning…. They said, 'We'll send over a list of acceptable topics,' for our segment on free speech."

However, Rome Hartman, executive producer of CBS Evening News, denies that this ever happened:

"Bill Maher was never told that he couldn't discuss religion in a 'Free Speech' segment. In fact, 'Free Speech' has already addressed religion and we expect others will in the future."

We'll have to see how this one plays out. As an interesting side note, the 'Free Speech' segment has thus far been dominated by rightwing views.

Media Matters reports:

"As Media Matters for America has documented, the first nine days of "Free Speech" segments have thus far featured nationally syndicated radio host Rush Limbaugh, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R), and former Bush aide Michael Gerson, but not a single Democrat or progressive…. CBS' alleged treatment of Maher stands in stark contrast to the network's reported treatment of Limbaugh, who bragged that he agreed to do a 'Free Speech' segment only after CBS acceded to various 'promises and conditions' he set down."

Full transcript of this video on the flip side.

Check it out and pass it on.

MAHER: Well, TV certainly has a lot of women. We saw three of them who where in the news this week: Meredith Vieira, Rosie O'Donnell, Katie Couric. Now, I have to say -- I want to say something about what's going on on that CBS Evening News broadcast, because -- full disclosure -- they asked me to do one of their -- they have some -- a special feature which they call "Free Speech," which I thought, great. Free speech. I thought it was a little condescending to be like, "Well, we're giving you free speech."

MICHAEL McKEAN: It was our idea.

BILL MAHER: Yeah. Let the other 500 channels have egg on their face -- we're providing free speech to America. But I was very flattered, because, I tell you, CBS News -- that's Edward R. Murrow, and [Walter] Cronkite, and Mike Wallace. I have them on a pedestal. But it's anything but free speech, and this is why I'm bringing it up. I'm not trying to rag on them, but, I mean, if CBS News doesn't understand what free speech is, what am I supposed to expect of Fox News?

GLORIA STEINEM: But, what happened to you? Did they --

BILL MAHER: What happened? Have you seen the broadcast?

GLORIA STEINEM: Yeah.

MICHAEL McKEAN: Yeah.

BILL MAHER: There was nothing -- Katie said at the beginning --

GLORIA STEINEM: Well, what happened to you? Did they not let you say what you wanted?

BILL MAHER: Well, I asked if I could talk about religion, and that was a deal-breaker right from the beginning.

STEINEM: But, that's -- that's ridiculous.

BILL MAHER: And they said, we -- ex -- that's my point. They said, "We'll send over a list of acceptable topics," for our segment on free speech. And, Katie said, at the -- she introduced this on her first broadcast by saying, "Expressing your opinion is one of the privileges of living in this country." Well, sorry again, but I thought it was a right, and not a privilege. I thought -- and, again, I only bring this up because they're treating it as a privilege. And, if CBS News doesn't get the difference between a privilege and a right, we're in a lot of trouble in this country.

Digg!

CBS is just like the rest of 'em. All together now, "Boo liberal media!"

the first nine days of "Free Speech" segments have thus far featured nationally syndicated radio host Rush Limbaugh, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R), and former Bush aide Michael Gerson, but not a single Democrat or progressive….

Oh, wait a minute...

.. but what do you expect from our corporate Ministry of Information? Censorship is freedom of speech.

I can just hear it now... "well, you see.. its ABOUT freedom of speach. That doesn't mean it is actually made WITH freedom of speach".

Lost All Respect

I lost all respect for CBS News as an institution when the CEO started dating, and later married, Julie Chen (the Early Show newsreader who also hosts Big Brother). How would you like to be the Exec producer of a show and know one of your underlings is sleeping with your big boss?

It's no that one incident- that was just the final straw. It started with Larry Tisch and went steadily downhill from there. Here is a good look at what happened at corporate and how it turned News into newz (infotainment).

Back when CBS News was the envy of everyone else, they spent 5 nights of PRIME TIME and all of their correspondents to report on the US military since Reagan was proposing the largest peacetime buildup in US history. Can you imagine even a cable news channel devoting that amount of time, effort and expense to a single subject of national interest-- especially in prime time.

Katie Couric is not the problem-- she is just another symptom of a problem birthed a long time ago. CBS News is just lights in a box...

MAHER, DROP THE INOCENT ACT!

Is Maher really that naive that he expected CBS to be any better than the rest?! The media hold free speach and freedom of expression in contempt, as one would expect.

However, it is worth stressing that the US is unique in that it has laws protecting free speach, no other country has them. I lived in the UK (whom, perplexingly, the left in this country tend to idolize) for 4 years, and the situtation is much worse there than here; a fact I know from personal experince. I will grant that mainstream journalists (e.g., Channel 4's John Snow) do have a fraction more self-respect than ours do; but, admiting this fact, there is still a very clear line that you do not cross (if you want to keep your job) -- there are many things that "it wouldn't do to say."

Dear Bill Maher: A right IS a privilege, moron

First of all, Bill Maher needs to brush up on his grammar is he doesn't know that a privilege is a right. (I can't believe I'm agreeing with CBS).

Secondly, I doubt anyone wants to hear his spiel regarding religion. Talk about a ratings killer.

And last but not least - go away, dude!

His whole point was to bring up and remind folks of the difference of free speech being considered a right verses a priviledge. And it seems some of the idiots here who have posted should learn a thing or two about teh precepts of America before expressin their opinions.

I praise anyone who brings this messsage to the public. It needs to be brought forth to each generation - repeatedly. Because, like the idiots above, they missed the piont entirely. And it is idiots like them that have allowed this country to go into decline.

The point he is making in that piece is that our society is treating free speech now as a priviledge and that we need to do something about it.

But of course, we always have slackers who have to make insulting comments about the messsage bearer to justify their irresponsibility in not doing anything about it. Those who posted above appear to have done so because they do not want to be held accountable for their inaction.

And THAT attitude is the filth in this nation that is resulting in its decline.
