Rep. Wexler Confronts Condoleezza Rice on Bush Administration's 935 Iraq War Lies

Posted by Matt Corley, Think Progress at 12:06 PM on February 14, 2008.

Rep. Wexler pressed Rice to explain the inconsistencies, asking "isn't it true that you had intelligence that cast doubt on your repeated claims?"
Condi Rice vs. Robert Wexler

Last month, the Center for Public Integrity and the Fund for Independence in Journalism released a study finding that the Bush administration made "at least 935 false statements" preceding the invasion of Iraq. Condoleezza Rice, who served as National Security Adviser at the time, made 56 false statements.

During a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing yesterday, Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL) pressed Rice to explain the inconsistencies, asking "isn't it true that you had intelligence that cast doubt on your repeated claims?" "No, it's not true," replied Rice tersely.

Wexler then pointed out that Rice was lying when she said it was "not true" and that there had been "intelligence that cast doubt" on the administration's pre-war claims:

WEXLER: I simply asked if you had intelligence that was contrary to the intelligence that you reported repeatedly to the American people...

RICE: Congressman, I would...

WEXLER: ... that Iraq did have weapons of mass destruction.

RICE: Congressman, I would suggest that you go back and read the key judgments of 2002. I think that will answer your question.

WEXLER: Yes. And the answer to the question, Madam Secretary, is that, in fact, there were contrary reports. You chose to weigh the reports.

In 2001, Rice argued, "We are able to keep arms from [Saddam]. His military forces have not been rebuilt." In the lead-up to war, she began making the opposite case.

In her response yesterday, Rice conceded that there was "disagreement" in the intelligence community about "whether or not" Iraq "had reconstituted their nuclear weapons program." But in 2002, Rice emphatically stated there was no doubt about the intelligence:

RICE: We do know that he is actively pursuing a nuclear weapon. We do know that there have been shipments going into Iran, for instance -- into Iraq, for instance, of aluminum tubes that really are only suited to -- high-quality aluminum tools that are only really suited for nuclear weapons programs, centrifuge programs.

In fact, the potential use of the aluminum tubes was one of the main points of disagreement within the intelligence community. According to the New York Times, "almost a year before" Rice made her statement on the tubes, her "staff had been told that the government's foremost nuclear experts seriously doubted that the tubes were for nuclear weapons." "Ms. Rice knew about the debate," the paper reported.

Digg!

This "woman" is a source of shame for all Americans - black, white, male, female.

Such a craven liar she is. But she loves her little president and that tells the whole story.

Wexler has the guts to stand up and ask direct questions and challenge the answers. For what it is worth: I totally support this move and hope many more challenges to the WH administration will follow.

we KNOW they are all a bunch of liars. When do we start convicting them and throwing them in prison?

Speed this process up. It's obvious as all hell that the guys at the top are guilty. Get to the fucking punchline!

Aluminum tubes are "only really suited" for a nuclear program??
Geesh, be creative, Rice. I can think of many non-nuclear uses for aluminum tubes if I put my mind to it. So could anyone else who isn't a moron.

And, just think, this kind of bull from the administration is again being supplied to us via the Mainstream Media in the lead-up to a new war in Iran.

As for Wexler's questions. I would be happy about all this... BUT we all know this will go nowhere, as there will NOT be ANY consequences for anybody for telling the many serious lies that led to war.
So, therefore, yawn. -- If Rice was afraid of any consequences, then the administration would have found a way to keep her from testifying.

rice repeatedly used the "UN" war and sanctions on iraq to use to legitimise her claims that the world in general believed sadam posed a threat.
this is a lie. the no-fly zones she speaks of as proof of Iraqi desire to do harm to americans were illegal and unsanctioned by th UN. this was stricktly the US breaking international law and the UN not doing anything about it (now it is being used as proof of the world's beliefs).

rice also reffered to un resolution with regards to WMD's inferring that this meant the UN believed he was hiding something. Also another lie (she's on a roll)
in 1997, weeks before the US lead UN sanctioned committee looking into WMD's in iraq was about to finish up and submit a report to the UN with regards to Iraq WMD's, the US ended the study (they have this perrogative since they were the ones to floor the request in the first place).
Scott Ritter and others on that committee have made clear the report would have been negative, thus ending sanctions, and any possibility of No-fly zones and illegal bombing missions.

it's crazy the senator did not pick up on this, as it strips all of her verbose defence of her actions and her choices with regards to weighing evidence.

The good about this article is that it references the quotation from Rice in 2001 that Hussein had been prevented from rearming and the overstated 2002 quotation by Rice as well. The bad about Wexler is the fact the he and the other Democrats are complaining and not indicting. They need to indict her with a special grand jury and impeach her for her crimes. Wexler's talk sounds nice and tough and principled, but it means nothing without an indictment. Complaining is not courage. Indicting is courage.

The saddest part about this public hearing is that it was not made very PUBLIC. News like this should have been BLASTED all over the airwaves as was the case of Anna Nicole Smith.

No bars were held back when the super model died last year. From sun-up to sun-down, the airwaves rocked the nation with Smith's death. Before any physical evidence was even apparent, the media had already prosecuted those around her.

Why is it that the media has ALL the say on what the American people get to see and hear? If the corporate media were doing their jobs, the story on Rice should've been on the news sun-up to sun-down; with legal commentators discussing the serious reprecussions of her so-called testimony. These are stories that AFFECT real lives...American lives, and Iraqi lives.

Truth of the matter is, the lie machine was so well scripted that the mass deceptors have forgotten where the lies began and where the lies ended.

Rice should be indicted, as well as the rest of her brood of irrational dictatorial leaders, beginning with Cheney.

Sadly, because this story did receive so little airtime, not much will come of this. Perhaps a pat on the back for doing such a good job at presenting the lie as the self-proclaimed righteous people they are. Sad.

Thanks for sharing this article. At least the news survives to some degree.

Wow, Just like Mutual of Omaha's "Wild Kingdom!"
I watched this exchange and was impressed by Rice's ability to puff her self up and put on a show of indignation. All while evading the question. She is a quick thinking, slick talking, arrogant shill. Her display was that of many wily liars who, when confronted with facts, emit an odor of false sanctimony, while thrashing about in an attempt to escape the trap set for themselves when they lied in the first place.
Her response to Wexler's question brought to mind various defense mechanisms displayed be creatures in the wild when they feel threatened. Some play dead, some emit a foul or noxious odor, and some raise up in order to make themselves appear bigger and more threatening than they actually are.
All C Span lacked was Marlin Perkin's voice over (with Wexler playing the role of long suffering partner Jim). "I think he's trapped the wily snake now. No matter how she struggles to free herself the simple trap baited by her own words, spoken years ago, is inescapable."

So what? The bushies have themselves barricated behind an impenetrable dunghill of lies, bribery, blackmail, obfuscations, and misdirection so vast that if it were a material object, it would easily be visible from the moon. Even if justice comes within striking distance of any of the bushies, the pardon will be employed as was in the case of libby. We'll have to wait until the bastards are out of power until they can be nailed, and this may explain the reluctance of Speaker Pelosi to initiate anything now.

She really believes she didn't lie to the American people and any one with any sense knows that she did. She's rewriting history by deadpan lying again!! I hope after this election we never see her in any office again. If she is appointed by any head of state, it's because they're in need of an expert LIAR to aid their nefarioius plans!

The hearing where she was forced to say "Bin Laden determined to stike in U.S. said everything that needed to be said. If she ever had a soul it was sold long ago. Cheney, shrub, rumsfeld, wolfowitz, and condi all belong in Gitmo or Abu Graib. They are war criminals. Will we recover our lost humanity just in time for their due process? Damn shame if we didn't let them have a good full dose of what they have wraught on so many others, but undoing every thing they have done is the only way we will (if ever) recover our standing in the world. The attempt to rewrite history has already began, seen Andy Card or Karl Rove on the MSM lately? "History will be a better judge"? Much easier, Mr. Card, than admitting you were a part of a debacle that compares only to slavery and native genocide? The fact that these crimes were committed on foreigners instead of on this soil might make it better for you, but the arabs will be "hating us for our freedom" for generations to come.
