Gay Sailor Found Dead on Military Base in a Suspected Homicide

Posted by Matt Corley, Think Progress at 11:00 AM on July 2, 2009.

The sailor, August Provost, said he was being harassed, but didn't report the harassment because of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell".

Yesterday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the body of openly gay Seaman August Provost was discovered in a guard shack at Camp Pendelton. A “person of interest” in connection to the suspected homicide is now being held in the Navy brig at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. According to Provost’s sister, he had recently complained to his family that “someone was harassing and bothering him.” According to the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, Provost likely didn’t report the harassment because of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”:

The Navy would not comment on whether Provost’s orientation had anything to do with the death.

“While ‘Don’t ask, Don’t tell’ is in place, anybody in the military who is a homosexual has no place to go to get assistance or counseling,” said Ben Gomez of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, an advocacy group for gays in the military.

Perhaps if there was no DADT, his death would have been prevented.

I wonder how they are going to keep this quiet.

And I'm sure this isn't the first time this has happened.

The murderer is no doubt going to be shown to be a religious wingnut opposed to anyone who is gay serving in the military.

Sadly, ditching DADT may not help...

As opposed to DADT as I am in theory, I worry that if it's abolished and gays are allowed to come out, it will only make them targets for the gay-bashers who otherwise might not have known about their sexual orientation. Look at the numerous, disgraceful incidents of rape and harassment of the women in our armed forces by our own male soldiers. Talk about being damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I am straight but very sad that because gays have had to go underground for years....they are treated like lepers who have to hide and play societies' game. Once we accept sexual orientation for what it is....just a sexual orientation....we, as a society, can remove the stigma that makes radicals so abusive and almost proud of victimizing. It is pathetic how
just by one's sexual orientation, one is defined!!!!PATHETIC!!!

when isn't murder a hate crime?

I notice this story is tagged as a "hate crime". What if the killer were a jilted homosexual lover? Are heteros the only sexual group that have the capacity to hate?

John McKeller, President of Homosexuals Opposed to Pride Extremism (HOPE) has publicly stated he staunchly opposes gay activism and the "marriage" of two men to be lawfully considered the same as the union of man and woman.

I don't hear anyone accusing McKeller of hatred or homophobia. The Human Rights Commission wouldn't take a second look at such a complaint.

You can't denounce only certain groups of people for being intolerant or hateful because that only makes the accusation disingenuous and unjustifiable.
