Karl Rove Is No Genius, He's a Failure

Posted by Cenk Uygur at 5:00 AM on August 14, 2007.

Cenk Uygur: Rove didn't just break the Republican Party. Rove also leaves behind a broken president, a broken army, a slew of broken laws and a broke country.

This post, written by Cenk Uygur, originally appeared on The Huffington Post

In the end, Karl Rove was wrong. Dramatically wrong. Running to the base worked in the short term, but might have killed the Republican Party in the long term. If there is going to be any permanent majority, it's going to be the Democrats, not the Republicans.

And who do the Republicans have to thank for that? Karl Rove. When asked about Rove's departure, John Edwards said, "Goodbye, good riddance." He might as well have been speaking for the whole Republican Party.

A permanent 51% majority? That is an idea so devoid of logic, it is amazing that anyone ever took it seriously. Even if you believed its underlying premise - which you definitely shouldn't have - the smallest demographic shift would undermine this "brilliant" strategy. There is nothing permanent about 51% in politics.

Rove was always so optimistic about elections, including 2006. Part of the reason for this was because he knew the fix was in. He knew that his minions had worked hard to cage voters, to give less voting machines to heavily Democratic districts, contested minority voters and done every little dirty trick in the book. And to be fair, they also worked hard to turn out their Christian army of voters. The kind who don't question their candidates and vote like robots for anyone their pre-paid preacher tells them to.

So, Rove figured that Republicans would win any close election. But what he didn't figure on is non-close elections. And that if you drive hard enough toward your base, then you won't have any more close elections. He thought there would be no price to pay for appealing only to the most conservative, narrow-minded, theocratic, xenophobic and militaristic people in the country. He was wrong.

Thanks to Rove the Republicans have lost the middle. And they have lost it for a long time to come. This will do untold damage to the Republican Party. So, there is great irony that the man Democrats loved to hate will come to be known as the scourge of the Republican Party.

But Rove didn't just break the Republican Party. Rove also leaves behind a broken president, a broken army, a slew of broken laws and a broke country. He spent heavily in districts and programs that he thought would help Republicans. He spent up the good will of the US abroad and Republicans at home. He's like the unscrupulous captain of a sinking ship getting off the boat before it goes under and takes everyone else down with it.

Now Bush is left on the boat without his brain, without any political capital and without any supporters. Plus, he has a madman roaming the decks looking to spear another Middle Eastern country loaded with oil. If Dick "Captain Ahab" Cheney is the only one steering the ship now, God help us all. Because there is some chance it might even get worse.

But politically speaking, if the Democrats had any sense, they'd be sending Rove parting gifts. Thanks for the memories. The only thing better than Rove leaving the White House would be for him to work for one of the leading Republican contenders. Please, please run another campaign where you try to appeal to only the Republican base. See how that works out for you and your "permanent majority."

Digg!

Rove was hardly a failure, from the NeoCon point of view.

He did precisely what he was tasked to do: guided into power and protected the President who would take the heat while the Vice President presided over the redistribution of trillions of dollars belonging to the taxpayers -- and whomever the US could borrow more from (a trillion from China, for example) -- to the multinationals who are the guiding force of the administration.

He was eminently successful!

Rove never was the brilliant mastermind they made him out to be. For years he was given a mystical dark aura like he's this powerful Sith Lord or something, working his evil magic behind the scenes, by a lot of liberals and folks on the left. Well there is some truth to that.

Now that I consider the legacy of The Toad of Darkness it reminds me of the need to be just as critical of those who your often times on the same side as.

You can fool some of the people all the time, and all the people some of the time, but you cant foll ALL the people ALL the time.

Repugwicans have done exactly what their philosophy directed. Make the Rich Richer, the Poor Poorer, and destroyed the middle class. The new Repugwican Feudalism.

Monarchy of the Rich.

People are waking up after 30 years of Repugwican rule, and they are not happy with what they see around them.

CAUTION. We take our eyes off Rove and his minions at our peril.

GOP eyes California's electoral pie
Strategists push a 2008 ballot initiative that would slice up the state's 55 votes for president,

Strategists estimate that if this initiative goes through in California, the Democrats cannot gain enough electoral votes elsewhere to win the White House in 2008.

Rove worked to kill the 2 party system

He wanted a permanent repulbican majority " by any means necessary".
He politicized The Justice Dept. and the GAO. The US Attorney scandal is all about how some US Attorneys were not using their offices in support of republican electoral ambitions. Other US Attorneys did use their offices in that manner: see Wisconsin and Alabama. These Attorneys were not fired.
At the GAO, Rove gave power point demonstrations to the administrators instructing them on how they should use GAO resources to further republican goals and to reward republican campaign contributors.
He was trying to institutionalize the republican party in America the way Mexico's ruling party is institutionalized there.
His ambitions are profoundly anti-democratic and dare I say: Un-American.
In a time of war when the entire country rallied behind the President, Rove used 9/11 as a political wedge issue. He questioned the loyal opposition's patriotism, love of country and accused us of supporting the terrorists when we questioned the need for an imperial presidency or debated the merits of their "unitary executive theory".
He supported warrant-less wiretapping, rendition and torture.
I suggest that democrats run against everything this man stands for and that he along with Alberto Gonzales should be depicted as de facto running mates of every nation wide republican candidate. Let's tie them all together in the public view. Let's do that now and keep doing it.
Rove tried to hijack democracy in America. That story needs to be told over and over again loud and clear.

ROVE DID WHAT HE SET OUT TO DO

My question is, why did he quit now? Maybe it's 'death by 1000 subpoenas"? Many people believe that the Dems have screwed up, I'm not so sure. They've managed to weaken the Republican foundation, including Karl Rove. Impeachment would never work, not enough votes. But there are ways of making people resign. Bush can be as arrogant as always but his party is coming unglued and so is he. I wonder who's next? Thanks, ANNA

Bush and gang have achieved almost everything they wanted to do, except, so far, to destroy social security. They have used government to consolidate all the power into becoming a dictatorship of a very few people, who have become very rich. They have set themselves up to crush dissent and will never leave office. Only a revolt by the military from either the top or bottom or both can stop the Decider. The German military knew this and made an attempt to stop Hitler, but failed.

...with the author. Rove was a huge success, he did what the Bushie Rethugs wanted done which was to form single party rule of America long enough to achieve certain specific goals. He did just that.
What is going on, has gone on for the past almost seven years and will go on for a long time to come, even possibly forever is what Rove accomplished.

He successfully knit together the right wing theocracy, both Catholics and evangelical fundies, into a very successful fighting machine; and that machine, now let out of the box will continue to do damage to America on behalf of the Repukkklicant party.

He merged the right wing theocracy with all of the ultra right wingers such as the still functioning southern confederacy movement, all the white supremacist groups, the neo nazis and skinheads and the KKK to which he gave new life.

Rove coalesced all the hate groups in America and made them a fighting force that will not stop.

He wedge-issued America into fractured pieces/groups and set Americans against each other.

Scalia said it when he called for the END of the rule of law and the END of democracy in America. Rove did all of this and did it very well. That is what the Rethug party and it's enablers are all about. It's called the dictatorship of the rich. And the rest of us will pay dearly from now on, thanks to Rove.

That is called The New World Order aka PNAC. We will all serve that order as it will become the center of our lives and deaths.

If the American people don't wake up very soon there is no hope. And they do not seem to have awakened yet, or maybe just a tiny bit. The 2008 election will reveal all.

Rove has done enormous damage to America as we are no longer one nation and quite likely will never be again. He has not only severly damaged the Democratic Party and thus our two party system of checks and balances, but he has nearly destroyed our democracy, our democratic values and institutions, our now badly shredded US Constitution, the very fabric of our society such that it is rapidly crumbling. And he got the right wing theocracy of crazies to do it for him, as they continue to carry out his war against the America of 'we the people'.

And what he did for dubya he will do the same for Jeb Bush who is awaiting his turn to continue on the very same path as his brother. They are by no means done yet.

The hate groups are and will be with us for a long time to come, especially including the two religious entities that are at the very core of and the ones so totally dedicated to this of ruleof the rich and the destruction of democracy in America, the ME and quite possibly the world.

These groups have control of the war machine and can nuke the entire ME into one huge sheet of glass and then steal their oil. And America will become another Saudi Arabia or Mexico or Russia or China.

The hate groups that Rove has welded together will not stop their narrow minded ideologically driven and completely self serving agenda, no matter who and how many have to die for their cause.

I truly don't see anything on the horizon that bodes well for the future of America.

Thank you surfreality for realiizing this and pointing this out:
"By the bye, is that you playing ratings fairy on all the above posted comments? Some one out there doesn't like the discussion we are having. Some one is a Rove wanna be... Could that be you?"

Maybe if we feed him/her a "Hi Rove Wannabe" cracker in each of our otherwise on-topic posts, his/her method for seeking recognition will be fully acknowledged, therefore rendered totally ineffective until he/she gets tired of playing a losing game. Or we can each take a moment to respond
Reply--5 or Reply--4 to every good comment where we do not actually wish to reply.

This is an excellent analysis and in a nutshell describes what the "faith-based" initiative program is really all about....

Sadly, many progressives will vote in a similar robotic-like fashion based upon one or two issues...

I believe that Rove should be prosecuted for what he has done to our country and its citizens. We are lesser as a result of his actions. He has made a mockery of ethical behavior and following the rule of law. Reckless not brilliant is the proper designation. He would never find a job in my company.

I never thought Rove was a genius - I thought he was the kind of thug common in Southern politics. His mistake was taking a small town act to the big leagues. Ultimately, power will find its own level and our power structure wasn't going to tolerate this petty megalomaniac for long. Look what a disaster this administration has been.

I agree with the people who said we need to watch out for his next move. Never turn your back on this snake. Our best bet is for Congress to put him behind bars. He can't run for office if he has a felony conviction.
