Rush Limbaugh 177, Barack Obama 0

Barack Obama tried to charm them, Rush Limbaugh tried to bully them. And the results are in. Round 1 goes, by unanimous decision, to Rush Limbaugh. Not one House Republican voted with the president on the stimulus package, even after his "charm offensive."

These guys are the barbarians at the gate, there's no charming them. President Obama went to visit them, he invited them over to the White House, he had drinks with them, he stood by while they bad-mouthed congressional Democrats, he adjusted the bill for them, he cut out the contraception education and he added tax cuts. In the end, what did he get for his efforts? A big fat doughnut. Nothing.

Not one House Republican voted for his stimulus package. 177-0.

On the other side, they went groveling over to Limbaugh, tripping over themselves to court his favor and take his tongue-lashings (how grotesque does that sound?). In the end, he got them all (and all the national attention -- which was his true goal).

Now, Obama might be playing a chess match here. He might be positioning himself politically to be able to say to the American people, "Now look, I tried to be bipartisan. I did all I could. And they did not budge. They are obstinate, partisan and obstructionist." He would have an excellent case to make.

Maybe he is that smart. But I believe he was also partly naïve enough to believe that he could persuade them. That they would listen to reason. That they would be swayed by his compromises. That's not how they roll.

The maddening part of all this is that the stimulus package, in my opinion, is bloated, vague and rushed. Does anyone really know how we are going to spend $819 billion? Let alone how we're going to pay for it? Has anyone done the analysis on whether spending $142 billion on education by the federal government is efficient or necessary? Could we have made do with $132 billion?

Instead, the Republicans went the same old tired route -- more tax cuts. They have not had an original idea in at least 30 years. Look, we tried endless tax cuts under Bush. Did that seem to do the trick?

Why not argue for spending the money in a constructive and judicious way? Why not pick a project to get behind and say we should concentrate on that for job creation? It could even be green energy because they could argue it is to reduce our dependence on foreign oil for national security reasons -- and it creates new, sustainable jobs. They would get huge points for being bold and actually caring about an issue for a change. But that would be constructive. And the Republicans don't do constructive.

What Obama said to the Muslim world in his inaugural address, he could have just as well said to the Republican Party: "People will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy."

Digg!

When you bring stale hamburgers to a BBQ, you get no takers. Obama should have at least read the damn stimulus package before he tried to sell that pig to anyone.

He did what our government has been doing for decades, peddling shit! And he did it right out of the gate. Is this what we are to expect of him..

Just go with the flow and not read a damn thing!

There is no way he could have supported all the pork that was in that mess of a plan. If he really wants to appear like a stong leader he should publically take Pelosi and Reid to task for developing such a mess!

Thank you GOP for finally having some brains!

Americans demand alot more

On the banks of a stream, the republican scorpion asks the Demo. frog to carry him on his back across the stream. The frog asks: "How do I know you won't sting me?" The scorpion replies: "Because if I do, we will both die." Satisfied, the frog agrees and they enter the stream. In midstream, the frog feels a sharp stinging sensation in his neck. As his paralysis starts to set in, he looks at the republican scorpion and asks: "Why?" The republican replied: "it's in my nature."

So what do you say to the Demo frog ? Would telling the frog about how, just when Peanuts gets ready to kick the football, Lucy pulls it up and goes home, how about telling him to get his act together and "go it alone."

and yet it passed.

whooda thunk it?

Its called being the MAJORITY. I realize democrats are not used to dealing with that situation... and haven't gotten used to it in the 2 years they have been in it.

like I always say about them... elected as the majority, rule like the minority.

The Dems are accustomed to losing and the Rupubs forget what it's like to lose. It will take time for all to adjust and for the Repubs to "reach across the aisle" and "act in a bipartisan way". It is their responsiblity to come to grips with the new arrangement and make an effort to listen to what the new boss has to say. There's no going back. Thanks, ANNA

$819 billion of rushed wastful spending

I can't exactly blame the Republicans for not voting for the bill.

You said it yourself that the bill doesn't seem to be a good bill.

I think it shows our government still lacks leadership.

You mentioned projects to get behind and build, I wholeheartedly support that.

I would like to see him announce a 10 year Apollo project to implement a Maglev powered LeviCar system, a fiber optic gigabit to the home municipal nationwide internet network, off shore wind farm grids, and a new more energy efficient electrical grid.

Yet all we see is government throwing money around, a little more than normal, on the pet projects we normally fund.

He is so desperate to turn around the recession that he is not thinking. Money well spent that doesn't immediately improve the economy is far better than money poorly spent that ends the recession.

Government has few opportunities to pass gigantic unnecessary spending bills, they should spend it on something good if they are going to spend it at all.
