Should congress ban the sale of Playboy and Penthouse at U.S. military installations? Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga) thinks this is a big enough problem that he needed to introduce legislation to promote a ban on such men’s magazines as “porn”. Soldiers aren’t too happy about it…

Commentary By: Richard Blair

I heard some chatter about this issue not too long ago, but didn’t pay much attention to it at the time. Looks like it’s become a big issue within the military, though:

GRAFENWOHR, Germany — Legislation that would restrict the sale of certain men’s magazines on U.S. military bases around the world would be bad for morale, according to soldiers at Grafenwöhr.

U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., has introduced legislation that would close a loophole in the current law that allows the sale of some sexually explicit material on military bases by lowering the threshold required to deem material “sexually explicit.”

A Department of Defense committee that reviews materials sold on bases ruled last year that magazines such as Playboy and Penthouse are not pornographic. But Broun’s Military Honor and Decency Act includes language that could make those magazines eligible for the ban…

…Broun, a Marine veteran, told Newsweek recently that the magazines sold in military exchanges are partly responsible for a rise in sexual assaults in the military and other problems…

Being a veteran myself, I’m not quite sure where to start on this - but how about - STFU, Rep. Broun. You are part of a congressional coalition that is responsible for supporting the continuing quagmires in Iraq and Afghanistan, and taking the men (and women) away from their families for extended chunks of time. Maybe that has just a little something to do with sexual improprieties among the military? Or perhaps because the Army and Marines have had to lower recruiting standards so low that someone with a felony on their record can now serve?

At the same time, is Broun planning on banning Playgirl and Cosmo? Just asking. Personally don’t consider either Playboy or Penthouse “porn”, and I think it’s a very short trip from banning those two magazines to Maxim and similar mags. Here’s an interesting quote from a soldier:

Pfc. Greg Smith, 21, of Northboro, Mass., a regular Playboy reader, said soldiers should be allowed to buy nudie magazines at the exchange.

“Playboy is good entertainment while you are on the can. They have jokes and good stories,” he said…

“Entertainment”. Hmm, never heard it quite put that way, but no, Pfc. Smith, if you were reading torture porn on the can (which is what the senior leadership in Washington uses), you’d be A-OK with Rep. Broun.

ASZ readers can take it from here.

With the incidence of RAPE going on in our military, they're worried about MAGAZINES??
Hell, subsidize kleenex and batteries and let the military take the edge off their sex drives.

Lemme guess that these self-same morons are the ones talking about how the soldiers are "fighting for our freedoms" while they're sitting safely in D.C. finding new ways to take our freedoms away.

Being former military, I wanted to say something about this, but I think "STFU" kinda covered it.

Women serving in combat more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed in combat by the 'enemy' and this is the focus of attention?

What? They are old enough to kill and die in Arabian deserts but not old enough to look at girly mags?

And no GI bill for you serving either, forget that, and go on your fourth, or fifth, or sixth, or seventh tour of duty, but no looking at pictures of naked women, nope, bad for ya, might go to hell, no your not already there, it only feels like it.

Well, the Bible has a lot of offensive language, too, but the Pentagon is pushing it aggressively. If these guys are mature enough to use weapons and risk their lives, shouldn't they be able to choose what they want to read (or leer at)?

Torture? Detention? Idiotic war? Stolen elections?

No, if you want to really upset Americans, take away their porn, beer, gasoline and TV.

Then you'll have a full scale giant backlash against the loss of our 'freedoms'.

Only in America.

The good ol' days

Formerly a sailor, stationed in Spain. I lived off-base.
When the time came to pack all my belongings for shipment Stateside, a Customs official was present. The actual packing of boxes was done by a local (read: Spanish) moving and storage company.
Before anything was put into a box, the Customs official would have to give his o.k. to the Spaniards.
There was a restriction on the amount of saffron that could be shipped - 4oz. - but since the agent couldn't tell how many ounces the jar held, he simply overlooked it.
However, when it came to the collection of magazines, he had to put his foot down. I had a pile of Playboy and Penthouse magazines, all purchased at the Navy Exchange. No problem! Into the boxes they went. But those Hustler magazines? Nope. The agent informed me that they were considered pornographic and couldn't be included in the shipment.
No big deal for me.
The Spaniards completed their work and sat in their truck, waiting for the Customs agent. Before they left, I gave them the Hustler mags. I instantly became an American goodwill ambassador.
The year was 1978. Has Playboy and Penthouse changed so much in thirty years? And will the good congressman take the next step and try to have those magazines removed from the stores in Georgia?
What a putz.

Please my father had 'Playboy' laying around the house all the time when I was a kid. I started buying Playgirl -great looking guys! used them as 'pin ups' in our college suite -Yummy hunks!
Sexual deviants don't bother with such beniegn publications. In fact they walk right past Them on the way to sexaully assault their female cohorts. Rape is an act of violence and Control- not a sexual act. someone needs to start hiring some REAL psychologist, sociologists and Historians and fire the whacked out Religious zealots they are allowing to Run Our Country!

Representative Broun apparently hasn't heard about the challenge to keep enlistments up. Nope, instead, he wants the military to be even less fun than it already is. Perhaps 'self-abuse' will be his next target! It's unlikely this will go anywhere.

Rep. Brown, as well as all our other so called elected officials, are all "not-sees"!!! Yes, Americans, may still have the apparent right to vote, but we have lost our right to pick whose goes on the ballot!!! The political parties have monopolized the system to the point of total control, and only allow their cronies on committees, or on the ballot!!! Call me a liar, all you want, the libertarian party, just took me off the ballot for governor, but then kicked me off of their mailing lists, and right out of the party, for answering one of their emails, bagging for activist to become delegates!!! So I applied, and I decided to throw my hat in the ring for V.P.!!! only TO BE OUTCASTED, JUST LIKE THEY OUTCASTED THE CONSTITUTION, THAT THEY SWORE TO UPHOLD AND PROTECT!!! I DARE CALL IT TREASON!!!

"It's just another sign of Amerika's complete dysfunction. Slaughtering innocent people is not obscene, but whacking-off at naked women on a page is.

Masturbation does tend to make people less violent though, so we can't have soldiers going around jacking off when they need to be killing as many innocent Iraqis as possible, so when the neocons and their corporate buds get there, they'll have "cleansed" the place nicely for them.

Remember:
Jacking-off in Iraq to images of women = SINFUL
Killing real women in Iraq = VIRTUOUS

ARE WE SICK OR WHAT?!

I did 5 years in prison, for testing the validity of the constitution, and I found it to be null and void!!! The state of Missouri, took all of the girly magazines, right out of the prisons!!! The results are that loneliness without physical reminders leads to homosexual behavior, and a disease ridden inmate population!!! Homosexuality, was Roman population control!!! Our prisons, have become homosexual factories!!! Is that what we want the military to become also???

This has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Seriously. These guys can risk their lives, but god forbid they see a little T & A to keep their minds occupied during their down-time (if they have any).

If the good congressman is truly interested in stopping obscenity, he should vote to end this war. Now, that's obscene!

If our troops are loosing their own personal freedoms, then what are they really fighting for??? Our troops went to Afghanistan to free the opium poppy from the Taliban, but will attack American citizens, in their own yards for growing marijuana!!! Our troops are fighting for world conquest, at the expense of personal liberties, and freedom!!! We have given our nation to the beast, who is waging war against humanity!!! If we truly wanted to end terrorism, we'd lay siege on washington!!!

therefore he assumes others feel the desire to rape when looking at Playboy. Just like other repressed politicians he thinks if he can just make a big enough, hard enough law, it will finally quench his own desires.

Congressman Paul Broun of Georgia was a former Marine. He is declaring Playboy and Penthouse magazines pornographic, and wants to ban them from being read by active duty soldiers. Did he not ever know any fellow Marines who read such material when he was on active duty? Or has his memory become non-existent for political reasons?
