Lieberman's Antics Do Not Go Unnoticed by the Democratic Establishment

Posted by Steve Benen, The Carpetbagger Report at 2:24 PM on May 14, 2008.

The former Democratic senator may be in danger of losing his committee chairmanship.

About a month ago, Joe Lieberman explained that he’s open to delivering the keynote address at the Republican National Convention in September. “If Sen. McCain, who I support so strongly, asked me to do it, if he thinks it will help him, I will,” Lieberman told The Hill. (His remarks came just days after Lieberman praised Rush Limbaugh for his “love for our country and support for our troops,” adding, “Rush has a big voice but he has heart that is even bigger.”)

At the time, the Democratic Senate leadership didn’t seem prepared to do anything about Lieberman’s antics. Asked whether Lieberman’s chairmanship was at risk in the next Congress, Majority Leader Harry Reid said succinctly, “No.” Majority Whip Dick Durbin added, “We have one difference of opinion, maybe two with Sen. Lieberman. As a whip, I can tell you time and again, he’s been there when we’ve needed him.”

Democratic discontent, however, seems to be on the rise.

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) could be stripped of his chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee after the next election, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has said.

Speaking to MSNBC host Keith Olbermann on Friday, Reid suggested the former Democrat, who lost to a left-wing primary challenger in 2006 and has now endorsed Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for the presidency, is not guaranteed to keep his prestigious chairmanship.

Olbermann asked Reid if there was “anything that he could do that would make you move to take his leadership position away on Homeland Security.” The majority leader responded: “Yes, of course,” but did not elaborate.

Earlier on Friday, Reid added, “I think it’s wrong what he’s done [campaigning for McCain], and I told him that.”

A Lieberman aide told The Hill, “Sen. Reid has made it clear that the chairmanship is absolutely not in jeopardy.” A month ago, I’d say that sounded right. Now, I’m not sure.

The Guardian added this item yesterday, suggesting the Republican convention may be the line Lieberman cannot cross, as far as the Democratic leadership is concerned.

Senator Joseph Lieberman, a stalwart backer of John McCain who calls himself an “independent Democrat”, could face punishment from the Democratic party if he is asked to speak at this summer’s Republican convention. […]

Reid today left the door open to sanctioning Lieberman if he speaks in favour of McCain’s nomination.

“I’ll consider anything,” Reid said at a breakfast with reporters today, adding that the Democratic presidential nominee, likely Barack Obama, would want to weigh in on Lieberman’s future role.

Hmm. A month ago, Reid suggested Lieberman is safe. Yesterday, he’s open to possible consequences.

I suppose the obvious question, then, is why Reid balked at the notion of punishing Lieberman when asked about this a month ago. My suspicion is that Reid, at least at the time, didn’t want to spark a controversy or show his cards — he abruptly said “no” when asked whether Lieberman’s chairmanship was at risk, tamping down speculation.

But over the last several weeks, my bet is that Reid has grown increasingly frustrated, and has probably heard an earful from some members of the Senate Democratic caucus. Perhaps the talk we’ve heard from Reid over the last five days is an effort to lay the groundwork for the punishment to come? At this point, I get the sense it’s a distinct possibility.

Joe wants to play on every team.

He is running for VP, Republican with McCain, he just hasn't figured out how to launch it to the public yet. It will be the 'Defend America' ticket.

Once again I ask, "Why is Harry Reid the leader of the Democratic Members in the Senate?" Why was he ever elected to that position in the first place? I can not imagine a more ineffective man. Keeping him in this position is a charade!

It's hard to forgive the Clintons for helping Lieberman keep his seat in the Senate against the wishes of CT Democrats. Bill campaigned for him against Lamont obviously with Hillary's blessing, depriving CT residents of Democratic representation.

It is obvious that Lieberman is really a Republican now. Why would any Democrat defend him at all is a wonder.

Reid is reluctant to punish Lieberman because the Democratic majority in the Senate is so slim. If Lieberman formally becomes a Republican, there will be, if I remember correctly, a 50-50 split in the Senate, which would give majority status and committee chairmanships back to the Republicans. As long as Lieberman remains an "Independent" caucusing with the Dems, he enables the Democrats to hold onto a 50-49 majority. If the Democrats can manage to pick up a few more Senate seats in the 2008 election and thereby solidify their majority, Lieberman and his chairmanship will be toast.

I really like Al Gore, and always have. Back in '92, I told my friends I wished the ticket had been Gore/Clinton rather than the converse. And his post-retirement conduct, like Jimmy Carter's, has been exemplary. But the one thing I will never understand is why he chose that unctuous, vapid, odious, pontificating, equivocating, posturing, warmongering, moralistic schmuck as his running mate. Maybe he thought it would keep would-be assassins at bay and ensure that the entire nation prayed daily for his health.

to Repubelicans. How in the hell can you trust a party that allows one of it's members to endorse and praise the leader of the opposition party. Granted Joe has the freedom to choose whomever he likes for President, the Democrats should force him to leave the party and become a Republican if he likes their choices better. Kick him the hell out. But I am sure this will be just like the high crimes and misdemeanors that the Dems won't prosecute.

Demigogues are as corrupt and guilty as the Repubes and don't want to be outed, any more than the closeted gay Repubes, with an election coming up. They still allow HilLARY to be a member of the party even after she endorsed the opposition leader over her own democratic opponent. Why oh why is she still around. She voted with the republicans on almost all the Iraq votes.

I guess it is better to be lead by losers than it is to be lead by crooks but it is getting very hard to tell the difference.

It should have been done after he thumbed his nose at the party and ran again as an independent, thus subverting the will of the Democratic voters. The Repugs put him in because they recognized him as one of them.

How can he be considered a DEM when he changed party to INDEPENDANT? Why do the DEMOCRATS still consider him a DEMOCRAT? Some one should run him our of the country on BUSH and CHENEY's coattail. He should be stripped of everything. He just keeps giving the finger to the DEMOCRATS like Bush and CHeney does. OH and hook Pelosie on Liebs coat tail.

The "Other" Judas?

James Carville, the long-time Clinton shill made no bones about Bill Richardson being a "Judas" for endorsing Obama. It is said that of all the so-called "turncoats", the Clinton's themselves are the most furious with the New Mexico Governor. I would argue that Richardson doesn't even compare with Lieberman for the "Judas" title by any stretch of the imaginatio, only it goes far beyond the Clinton candidacy and into the whole democratic party.

I also firmly believe that the only reason why the democratic leadership is tip-toeing around this "Independent" is because he holds sway to a possible republican dominance in the Senate with their current measley 1 vote majority. I am hopeful that in the upcoming election, enough democratic senators will be voted in so that this anal retentive turncoat will be relegated to the back bench of all committees and he will be stripped of any power he still holds. I further hope that he will be taken to task by his own constituents in his next bid for his office.
