John Bolton Won't Shut Up About Bombing Iran

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 4:31 PM on July 2, 2009.

And for some reason, major newspapers seem compelled to keep publishing his thoughts on the subject.

A PATTERN EMERGES.... Time's Joe Klein notices that a certain former U.N. ambassador has a preoccupation with bombing a certain Middle Eastern country, and manages to keep finding major newspapers to publish his thoughts on the subject.

In the Washington Post today, screw-loose wingnut extraordinaire John Bolton has a column in which he advocates an Israeli strike against Iran. This would be shocking, except that...

On June 26, Bolton had an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times in which he advocated bombing Iran. And, well, er...

On June 12, he had an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal in which he advocated bombing Iran.

And that's just three op-eds in three weeks. We could go back a little further and find Bolton -- in op-eds, on Fox News -- advocating military attacks on Iran for years.

Indeed, as Adam Serwer noted, given Bolton's incessant rhetoric on the subject, "it's hard to take seriously his proposal that now is actually the opportune moment to bomb Iran."

I'd just add that it's interesting to consider the competing conservative messages on Iran. For the better part of June, the line was that the United States needed to do more to support Iranians. What we really needed to do, neocons said, was speak up and let the Iranian people know we're on their side. And yet, here's Bolton, arguing again that the one thing that's really needed is a bombing campaign on Iran.

Spencer Ackerman suggests there's a problem with Bolton's approach.

Yes, the Israeli bombs will only kill the bad Iranians. When patriotic Iranians of the opposition see Israeli F-16s raining death from above on Iranian targets, Bolton actually expects them to think, "Boom shack-a-lacka! Here come our Israeli liberators! Let them bomb whatever they like, since even though Mir Hussein Moussavi supports a nuclear program as part of a consensus opinion, I believe Israeli propaganda that says it has our best interests at heart! That'll show Mahmoud Ahmadinejad! Did you hear that, Aunt Marjam? Aunt Marjam...?"

If there's one thing that a Bush official should understand, it's that people under attack from a foreign enemy don't rush to embrace their more moderate leaders.

Joe Klein described Bolton as "dangerous and demented." That may seem harsh, but under the circumstances, it also seems appropriate.

Digg!

Oh I think he understands. There is a name for it, Manifest Destiny.

Kill the Indian. Save the Man.

What I want to know is can a Jewish reporter objectively cover other Jews? I don't think so.

Kurtz: Can African-American women objectively cover Michelle Obama?

he has no power or authority anymore! And nobody cares what he thinks!

I still can't believe he didn't get punched out at the UN while he was there. Or, at least a shoe thrown at him.

Ok, here's the plan. We drop a nuke on Iran with Bolton sitting on it waving his hat and yelling "Yahoo" all the way down.

This contemptible buffoon is adored by the plutocrats, their Plutocratic Party, and the scoundrels at Fox Newstwister Channel who use him, among many other rightwinger loons, as a guest to keep the Dupes, rednecks, and crackpot evangelicals foaming at the mouth and cheering the need for getting back into the majority in Congress the scumballs who serve the Plutocracy so well.

Iran pre-emtively nuking Israel? After all... how do we really decide who is the "good guy"? Iran has not developed weapons, and has not been proven to be developing them. Israel already has them. Israel has killed FAR more innocents of late than Iran.

C'mon, are we EVER gonna' kind of, you know, lose and/or ignore these guys?!? One would think (read: HOPE) that they'd sort of creep away & disappear, but I guess nothing @all embarrasses them. So, sure, let's just "bomb" someone else real quick-like, before Iraq closes-down & Afghanistan is rethought & shut-down ... gee, can't we fight another country soonest!? These morons are insufferable. I tire of their constant drummings & war dance choreography. Stop, please stop, covering/encouraging them! They are mountain-top oracles, sans mountain.

To bomb Iran would be the actions of an idiot. The US armed forces don't have the cajones to take on the Iranians who have a notable air force, lotsa F-14s and Dassault Mysterys among others, a REAL army, real helicopters and enough in the testicle department to LAY WASTE TO THE US military. So to bomb them would mean cruise missiles or IRBMS. The US by it's own admission hasn't had any good intelligence out of Iran since the Shaw got the boot in '79. Sooooooooooooooo,............ they don't have a clue what the Iranians have or don't have. We DO know what the US gave em when the Shaw was extant, and if they DO have nukes, Jewsrael will be the first target, bet on it. Most countries in that region of the world are sick to death of the Jews and their puppets, the Americans. We know conclusively that George and his dick, Cheney, were less than stupid about things military, lets hope Osama has a few more working neurons. If he bombs Iran, he's the most stupid bastard on the planet. As far as Bolton goes, someone simply knock him CLEAN out! You know those haymakers coming from hundreds of miles gaining impact power at every mile... then heading away at ever increasing speed to nail another stupid bastard!

He isn't satisfied with his dear Wee Georgy destabilizing the entire Middle East with his insane warmongering and blundering. Now, he actually wants ANOTHER WAR. I guess two wars aren't enough for him.

The bad thing is that he and his neocon pals may actually succeed in persuading Israel to actually attack Iran. That'll be some fine fresh Hell for all of us, won't it?

Put this tinfoil hat goofball in the looney bin quickily. He's exceedingly dangerous!
