Right-Wing Insanity: Former CIA Official Wishes for Terrorist Attack on U.S. (!)

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 10:29 AM on July 1, 2009.

Former CIA official Michael Scheuer has taken some provocative policy positions over the years, but I never thought he'd go this far.

WHAT AMERICANS REALLY NEED.... Former CIA official Michael Scheuer has taken some provocative policy positions over the years, but I never thought he'd go this far.

Talking with Fox News' Glenn Beck, Scheuer argues, "The only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama Bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States --- because it's gonna take a grassroots, bottom up pressure -- because these politicians prize their offices, prize the praise of the media, and the Europeans. It's an absurd situation again, only Osama can execute an attack which will force Americans to demand that their government protect them effectively, consistently and with as much violence as necessary."

The context of this is a plan to send National Guard volunteers to the southern U.S. border to address the drug trade.

Instead of saying, "That's completely insane," Glenn Beck nodded along, in apparent approval of his guest's ridiculous argument.

I was trying to think of how best to describe how spectacularly offensive this lunacy really is, but it looks like Adam Serwer beat me to it: "[U]nderstand, this is not unpatriotic. You can wish all manner of horrors on this country, but as long as these horrors might serve a specific political agenda, you're not being unpatriotic. Unpatriotic is a public health care plan. Unpatriotic is a judge modifying subprime mortgage loans to keep a roof over someone's head. Unpatriotic is phosphate free detergent. Patriotic is wishing for a terrorist attack on the United States."

I'd just add that there will almost certainly be no consequences for this. Two nutty conservatives can talk about the advantages of another terrorist attack on U.S. soil -- indeed, they can long for it -- without facing any real pushback at all. There won't be any suspensions or boycotts. No sponsors will withdraw. None of Beck's or Scheuer's allies will distance themselves, and neither one will be excluded from polite company.

It was, in other words, just another day on Glenn Beck's highly-rated unbalanced national television broadcast.

Digg!

... call me crazy (or one of the few sane men in a crazy world), but I don't trust the people hoping for a terrorist attack to server their own political ends to protect us from terrorism, nor do I trust their advice.

I want MORE people to die! Doesn't that sound like an awesome idea that'll fix all of our problems?! Hell yeah! Bring in a fleet of Jihadists! THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! Woo-hoo!

Dumb-ass.

"The sheep are starting to think for themselves again! My God, look at who they elected for president! Quick! we need to do something! Hey, Osama, how quick can you scare up another one of those things?"

OK, so if members of the CIA are willing (wanting) to let another 9/11 happen, it kinda makes ya wonder how much they had to do with the last one, don't it?

is just another neo-con who is parlaying his previous national security position into an opportunity -- gladly given by Glenn Beck -- to be another crazy media whore.

Shameful.

I would boycott the companies that advertise on Beck's show

but I'll be damned if I'll waste my time watching Fox to find out who they are. I have no use for the plastic crap and manufactured pseudofood they're trying to peddle anyway, so the impact of my boycott would be minimal at best.

Of course, Beck is preaching to his own deranged choir. No attempt to censor or censure these insane statements will help those who choose to buy into the mythology. What we need to do instead is make our opposition as rational and appealing as possible to persuade those who are holding the cup but haven't yet downed the kool-aid.

Be careful what you wish for! Maybe someone will commit a terrorist act against Fox news...but who would be blamed? Isn't the mere act of wishing for a multitude of American deaths an act of terrorism?

But since it's a CIA agent saying it on Glenn Beck's show, it's OK.

I just can't fathom how you get to that point.
If this is your world view, are you still sane? What an incredible twisted, way through the looking glass place. This man has been engulfed entirely in a spy versus spy world that has detached from 99 percent of the reality that the rest of us live in. His plans and ideals do not relate to reality any longer. His world is entirely about winning a war of subterfuge, whatever the cost to the world he is supposed to be waging the war for. He is lost.
It is in many ways similar to the wall street microcosm that has destroyed the real world financial system. They are so deeply immersed in their world, that they disconnect from the rest of the world, except unfortunately, the destruction they cause.
A line from a novel I read was
" Specialization is for insects. " These people are like insects. Furiously industrious, but mindlessly unaware of the damage they do.

Steve Benin, do you really not see the connection? This is the same as the lies of 911

The same argument came up at the PNAC meetings: we need a terrorist attack, something huge, before we can get the American people in favor of a gigantic imperial attack on the Middle East!
Scheuer is just saying it like Cheyney and Bush said it and the Neocons said it.
And that is why we had the false flag attack of 911.
Do you really not understand this?
If you don't, you are not very astute.
If you do, then you are censoring the information, and are part of the conspiracy to coverup the truth of 911.

Not much of a choice, is it?

Isn't this a clear case of treason and can't somebody stop this wingnut from appearing on any(even the demented Fox) channel? To wish that another attack on the country happens is also sheer lunacy. Somebody call the men in white coats to pick up this loonybird.

It's no surprise that Glenn Beck should just nod and agree with this deranged idiot. He has long been in the deranged column. But what I want to know is - why is anybody watching this creep?

They sure do wish for some awful things. I don't doubt that alot of people out there don't like us. But they're 'out there' and not shouting at us over our own television sets calling themselves patriotic and the values people. There's a major contradiction here. Who'e side are they on? Do they need so much excitement in their lives? Hey, just go have an affair and have the decency to just keep the rest of us entertained. Thanks, ANNA

People like this freak of nature are DANGEROUS! If they can't get Bin Laden or some other religious fanatic to do the job for them, THEY are crazy enough to do it themselves. OUR LEADERS need to STOP worring about BOOGY MEN in the middle EAST and put a STOP to the TERRORISTS IN OUR OWN MIDST. They need to realize these TERRORISTS right here at HOME are much more DANGEROUS than the MADE UP terrorists of the RIGHT because these TERRORISTS ARE the RIGHT and look like our NEIGHBORS and FRIENDS and can blend in until they're ready to start the slaughter.
TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY! FBI, SECRET SERVICE, CIA, LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT, INVESTIGATE THESE GUYS AND STOP THEM BEFORE THEY CAUSE A CATASTROPHE.

So, Glennie, who'd be appropriate as a kiddy show host but now a Faux "commentator," brings on an "official" who endorses a terror attack against us.

Should anyone really be surprised?

That's Glennie's bread and butter? Fear, apocolypse, and we're the victims...

And his "guest" should be locked up!

Beck is disturbed but Scheuer is totally deranged. This is treasonous.
Now do you believe Nancy Pelosi over the CIA?

This is precisely the type of right-wing wacko Bush and Cheney went to for advice and put into our government to "protect us".They want Bin Ladin to detonate a powerful nuke here to save us from a European lifestyle.
I hope Osama never gets the opportunity but if Bin Ladin takes the advice of Mr.Scheuer here is a really good place to plant said nuke.

Glen Beck could interview Bin Ladin and they could both become martyrs.Just think about it Glen,72 virgins.

Wiki:

"Michael F. Scheuer is a former CIA employee. In his 22-year career, he served as the Chief of the Bin Laden Issue Station (aka "Alec Station"), from 1996 to 1999, the Osama bin Laden tracking unit at the Counterterrorist Center. He then worked again as Special Advisor to the Chief of the bin Laden unit from September 2001 to November 2004. Scheuer became a public figure after being outed as the anonymous author of the 2004 book Imperial Hubris, in which he criticised many of the common United States and Western world assumptions about the motives for Islamic terrorism, and put these into the context of greater Western-Islamic relations.

Scheuer left The Jamestown Foundation in February 2009 from a position as Senior Fellow. He claimed in an anti-war.com article that he was fired by the organization for his outspoken views on US-Israel relations.[1] Jamestown's current president, Glen Howard, has pejoratively likened his views to those of two-time presidential candidate and congressman Ron Paul."

-----------------------------------

So, essentially this guy was supposed to keep tabs on and later track down Bin Laden. He failed miserably and has had this hair up his ass ever since.

This sort of utterance in public is just one more instance of the failure on the part of so many people to recognise that trumpeting freedom of speech without also adding the requirement that this be done with a sense of responsibility is futile.

So much of what is said and published around the world these days shows this malaise. We live in a world where responsibility is ignored and, if someone is pushed to confess responsibility, he passes the buck to somebody else - usually an underling who cannot defend himself.

SICK!!!
