An Unexpected Twist: Palin's $150,000 Wardrobe Doesn't Add Up

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 4:42 PM on October 23, 2008.

It seems like the RNC's receipts aren't matching up with those of the stores' ... and here I thought the story was odd enough before.

In all sincerity, I had no intention of returning to the subject of Sarah Palin's $150,000 campaign wardrobe, but there's been one unexpected twist.

Up until now, the question has been, "Why did the RNC spend so much money on clothing and accessories?" This afternoon, a report from the New York Times generated a new question: "Why don't the numbers add up?"

Some of the fashion experts consulted Wednesday, for instance, about the $150,000 in purchases that appeared on Federal Election Commission records were puzzled by where all of that money had gone, given what they had seen of Ms. Palin's wardrobe.

Consider also the $4,902.45 charge at Atelier New York, a high-end men's store, presumably for Ms. Palin's husband, Todd, the famous First Dude.

Karlo Steel, an owner there, said he had gone through the store's receipts for September, twice, and found no sales that matched that amount, nor any combination of sales that added up to the total. Because the store carries aggressively directional men's wear, he caters to a small clientele and knows most of his customers by name, as well as the history of their purchases.... "We have no recollection of that sale and no idea what they are talking about," Mr. Steel said.

Similarly, the RNC records show a charge of $98 at a high-end children's boutique in Minneapolis, but after going through their receipts, the store owners found no record of the sale.

And here I thought the story was odd enough before.

How is Little Ms Trailer Trash ever going back to Target and J.C. Penny now that she's had a taste of Sachs 5th Avenue, Nieman Marcus and Bloomingdales?

After this election she can go back to Wasilla and shop at Wally World--where all the real "Joe Six Packs" go to shop because they have no freakin' choice!

Stinkin' GOP hypocrites!

Looks like maybe her personal shopper is helping herself, don't 'cha know??? This could possibly be felony fraud according to the dollar amount! I bet the RNC is hopping mad about this one! They've got some explaining to do!

The nerve of Sarah Palin to pretend she's qualified to be V.P. She's a Bush type jarhead. Open up her head and put in whatever you want, just like they did with W. The perfect patsy for the real power behind the Business party.

Shopping Lessons for Sarah

Stylish Sarah needs some shopping lessons from Michelle Obama, who manages to look fabulous on a fraction of the RNC budget, and at her own expense. Like her $20 million, little-used Wasilla hockey rink, her extravagant family travel budgets at Alaskan taxpayers' expense, and her state-funded gifts to her church, Palin's sartorial spending belies her claims of fiscal conservatism.

So, I don't understand. No record of the sales? Then where did the clothes come from? Me, I wouldn't know Valentino from Versaci, but those who do have identifed Ms Palin's threads as the real thing. And her campaign has not denied that they somehow acquired the expensive clothes, saying only that they will be donated (which I doubt they would have been until the expose') to charity. Also, I just read my morning paper, and it quotes P as saying that most of the clothes never leave the belly of her campaign plane, verbatim quote---that testifies to their existence. BTW during the GOP convention I read an article about a mysterious visit to a children's boutique in Minneapolis---with supporting detail from the sales clerk who sold a baby outfit she later spotted on Trig. And the argument that "she needed clothes" makes me sick---this woman was governor of a state---did she wear sweat suits to work?

I think there are no reciepts because the money was spent elsewhere and they are using this (Palins wardrobe) as a way to hide it. I think I could have picked out better clothes for her. Lilly you're right. What did she wear to all the State affairs? I can understand some new clothes, I mean she is runnng for VP, but $150000. For god sake that would have paid off my mortgage with money left over. Leave it to the polititians to recify spending this much on clothes when our whole financial system has gone belly up!!

If you notice the other women in the senate and congress always look nice, but they are not conspicuous in their appearance. No extravagant jewelry. It's called good taste. I knew that Palin was dressed way above her means and unable to pull it off. That's when it becomes insulting to other women. Valentino suits, hair and makeup stylist, other people paid to care for her children. Yep, she's just like all the other working wives and mothers. She's just a spoiled, selfish brat and the vast majority of women are not. She has set us back years. No wonder Hillary Clinton wouldn't go near her. Thanks, ANNA

Quite possibly that money is now being diverted to, oh say, defrost Osama Bin Laden who has been off somewhere in one of those secret military bases we don't hear too much about! Imagine if they propped him up next to McCain repeating his hint from one of the debates where he said "I'll get Bin Laden, I know how!" I wouldn't put anything past them to spoil this election short of hacking into the battleground states computer systems AGAIN and flipping our votes to the Repubs!

Who cares how much was spent on her clothes?

Olbermann covered it a few nights ago. Was purported to have been lobster, caviar, etc. at a Ritz-Carleton. Problem was, Michelle was not AT the Ritz-Carleton, not even in that city.

Can anyone give me an instance of a neocon ever telling the truth?

They would rather say the money was for her clothing than whatever they spent it on. which must be far worse.

the receipts are in Cindy McCain's name and they are not from Saks or Neiman Marcus, but rather from foreign designers that Cindy favors. Have you not noticed that the styles of the two women are nearly identical and that style is mirrored in the clothing of the children and the husbands? Cindy McCain probably paid for these from her personal fortune, gave a group of receipts from her daughter's charge card to the RNC to be partially reimbursed, and she and her husband have decided to eat the rest so that they look like Hockey Mom and First Dude - regular people, dontcha know? All in all, if these clothes show up on charity auctions will be the bigger surprise. I suspect that they will be tailored to fit Megan after the election and the McCain's shed themselves of this political disaster named Palin!

Obama has spent $150million on his campaign so far and still has his hand out. McCain's run was sated at $38million!

Up until last week, everytime I saw Palin on TV, I'd think: She REALLY needs to stop doing her own hair, it looks awful, she needs a hairdresser!
Only to find out last week that her hairdresser is the highest paid person on her staff!

What a laugh!!!She'd be better off doing it herself, it's not a good look, she could save big bucks using a brush and a few cheap bobby-pins.
