McCain Takes Obama's Bait: Promises to Bring Up Ayers at Debate

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 11:58 AM on October 14, 2008.

He doesn't care about Ayers, but he feels compelled to keep talking about Ayers, and has now promised to bring up Ayers at the debate.

Last week, it seemed as if the Obama campaign went out of its way to bait John McCain on the Bill Ayers "issue." Obama, Biden, and surrogates said they were surprised McCain talked all about Ayers leading up to the debate, but not at the debate itself.

"Well, I am surprised that, you know, we've been seeing some pretty over-the-top attacks coming out of the McCain campaign over the last several days that he wasn't willing to say it to my face," Obama told ABC's Charlie Gibson. "But I guess we've got one last debate."

Obama, in this sense, was almost daring McCain to make these attacks directly.

The taunting apparently worked. This morning, McCain told a St. Louis radio station that he feels compelled to make the attack now, and it's Obama's fault.

"Oh, yeah. Y'know, I was astonished to hear him say that he was surprised for me to have the guts to do that, because the fact is that the question didn't come up in that fashion. So, y'know, and I think he's probably ensured that it will come up this time. And, look Mark, it's not that I give a damn about some old washed-up terrorist..."

He doesn't care about Ayers, but he feels compelled to keep talking about Ayers, and has now effectively promised to bring up Ayers at the debate. Not that he cares, though. Not at all. Perish the thought.

So, what happens now? Kevin noted the other day that there are three possible angles here.

First, McCain does nothing and ends up looking like a coward. Second, their taunts get under McCain's skin so badly that he goes over the edge and does something really stupid. Third, McCain takes the bait and decides to bring up Ayers at the next debate.

The first two possibilities are obviously good for Obama. And the third? I guess they must be really sure they have a dynamite response ready in case McCain decides to unload next Wednesday. Either that or they're trying to fake McCain into thinking they have a dynamite response, thus scaring him into not bringing it up. Or else, by being so obvious about it, they're actually trying to sell McCain on the fakeout theory -- and then when he falls into the trap and brings up Ayers, they're going to crush him.

I guess we'll find out tomorrow night.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Is this all the ammunition McCain has? He's wasting his own time that could be better spent on health care or the economy. If the Ayers story had any significance we'd know it by now. ANNA

It's a solid tactic. Turn McCain's attack back on him and paint him into a corner with it.

I'm sure Obama already has a response. In fact, I bet he already had a response ready before the last debate.

Obama is running a brilliant campaign on so many levels. No doubt he's completely ready for the last debate.

I think if I were Obama I'd simply go on stage and tell the maverick what I heard my dad say to an argumentative neighbor:

"maverick, I'd have a battle of wits with you, but my dad told me never to fight an unarmed man."

Maverick is promising to whip "that one's" "you know what" and promising to bring up Ayers.

To the first I would ask "you know you don't control this outcome, right?" To the second I'd have to respond as everyone has been responding for weeks "and your point is?"

If I were so cursed as to be McCain at this point Id bring up the good Rev. Yes it is a trap that could crush McCain but, what else does he have? The man is out of ammo. The only ones listing to him are the nut cases. At this point McCain cannot win the election but he can poison the well for the rest of America. So much for a former American hero.

That sometimes there is a thin line between a terrorist and a patriot, isn't there? I doubt if ANY politician doesn't have an association or two that could be awkward. We know McCain's got 'em. Maybe Obama will just remind us of the, although that seems a little too undignified for him.

And then Palin's husband's associations have not been made the controversy they should be. Why is it that any extremism on the right is seen as love of one's home (and therefore understandible), and extremism on the left is seen as hate of one's home (and therefore bad)? What about as I see as the liberal love of country: seeing what's wrong honestly and being idealistic enough to think it will be better for us all if it's changed?

One thing I've said before: if anyone at an Obama rally were shouting "Kill him" the riot police would be there. Those doing it on the right are seen as isolated crazies. On the left it would be seen as an organized movement for assasination.

The McNutt-PaleLie team remind me of some old movie characters. James Cagney in "White Heat." Humphery Bogart in "The Petrified Forest." Both actors portrayed thoroughly despicable bad guys!

McCain only wants to talk about the Vietnam era. He is fixated and completely stuck in a time warp and is 40 years behind the times.

To call someone who was a 60's radical fighting against the Vietnam war a "terrorist" is one thing, but to constantly hold up one's qualifications as having been broken down by torture 40 years ago sounds like someone who is either completely off his rocker because of what happened 40 years ago (so he cannot let it go and live in the present) or he honestly is deluded into thinking he is still a POW!!

Either way, the guy seems to exhibit some typical symptoms of some kind of dementia or PTSD that he is trying to work through using all of us as his scapegoats. He may well be in the last stages of Melanoma, which is affecting his brain, seeming to cause seizures and "restless walking syndrome", and won't release medical records. This is likely why supporters are talking like it is really Palin who is running for President and that is especially frightening.

To equate a man whose radical past is not equal to his respected contribution in the present as the equivalent to "Ties to or pallin around with terrorists" when Obama was 8 years old at the time of Ayers radical past, is simply the ravings of a LUNATIC. We should call it for what it is--CRAZY! Especially since McPain & Co. have very strong ties to Saddam Hussein, corporate lobbyists, the Keating 5 and pretty much all the major players responsible for the current economic meltdown! And all of McCain's plans say loud and clear: Reward the wealthy, corrupt bankers and other corporatists, continue to siphon off our future in favor of fat cats, while taxing our healthcare benefits but cutting taxes on corporations, capital gains taxes and other millionaire club perks.

McCain is the Naked Emperor Old Guy with NO NEW IDEAS, and very dangerous knee jerk, erratic, panic-based campaign that is inciting violence among his supporters. If he can't compete, now he wants to literally kill his competition and send the Alaska first goons after Obama?

Glad to hear you're ready to fight on the Ayers attack, which is really about nothing at all.

One bad sign is your disowning of ACORN, which is about something important. Their drive to enroll poor people is an important part of your movement base, reaching into the ranks of the traditional non-voters well beyond what the official campaign can do. By failing to acknowledge their efforts and saying you don't need them you have helped legitimize the attack on ACORN, and now the sharks smell blood in the water!

You have nothing, nothing to gain by giving the Swift-boaters an inch! And no one will give you quarter for making nice!

Do you remember the Manchurian Candidate?

McCain is a terrorist sleeper controlled by a cell in Vietnam.

At any moment he will hear the keyword that will incite him to perform horrible acts.

I would encourage Mr. Obama to keep his distance and not shake hands tonight.
