Latest Troopergate: Palin Plays Make Belive; Feels Vindicated

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 7:29 AM on October 13, 2008.

In response to being found guilty of violating the public trust, Palin has decided to play make-believe.

The news on Friday night was fairly devastating for Sarah Palin: an independent investigation launched by the Alaskan legislature found that the governor had, in fact, violated the public trust in her Troopergate scandal. She abused the powers of her office, violated state ethics rules, and lied about it. This is pretty tough to spin.

In response, Palin, who is now apparently bordering on delusional, has decided to play make-believe.

Sarah Palin told Alaska reporters Saturday that she had been "cleared of any legal wrongdoing, any hint of unethical activity" in the investigative report released the day before that explored her actions in dismissing a state official who refused to get her ex-brother-in-law fired from the state police.

"Well, I'm very very pleased to be cleared of any legal wrongdoing, any hint of any kind of unethical activity there," Palin said on a Saturday conference call with reporters from the Anchorage Daily News, KTVA-Channel 11 and KTUU-Channel 2. "Very pleased to be cleared of any of that."

I know, I know, after the last eight years, I really should be used to this kind of thing. But I can't help but find this breathtaking. Either Sarah Palin is lying brazenly or she's functionally illiterate.

The very first finding in the report is that Palin "abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act.... Compliance with the code of ethics is not optional." Over and again, the report highlights instances in which Palin's conduct was at odds with Alaska's Ethics Act. Palin read this and concluded she's been "cleared" of "any hint of any kind of unethical activity."

So, before the report comes out, Palin issued her own report announcing that she'd cleared herself of any wrongdoing. After the report came out, and concludes that she'd violated the public trust, Palin once again cleared herself of any wrongdoing.

ABC News' Jake Tapper added that Palin made multiple claims about the Troopergate scandal over the weekend, all of which were patently false.

John Cole summarized the problem nicely: "I don't know how to react to this. I really just don't. When someone is that willing to look at you and just flat out make shit up and reject facts, there really is nothing you can do without driving yourself insane."

I'd just add one other observation. On Friday, Palin was found to have violated the public trust in an abuse of power scandal. On Saturday, it was on the front page of the major dailies. And on Sunday morning, NBC's "Meet the Press," ABC's "This Week," and CNN's "Late Edition" ignored the story altogether, despite lengthy discussions about recent political events, as if a major scandal involving a candidate for national office isn't particularly interesting. I'll simply never understand this.

does not know what to do when S.Palin lies so blatantly, I would suggest that he asks her point blank: WHY are you lying?

Is that commissioners can be fired for any reason...ethical reason or unethical. Legal reason or illegal.

No matter what, the firing can happen.

In many ways, this would be like "acquitting" a man of murder charges, by finding he had acted in self-defense...and meanwhile, citing him for being in illegal possession of the RPG launcher and fully-automatic assault rifle that he used in the killing.

It's TRUTHINESS at its best! Whatever I feel is true can now be deemed true - as long as I repeat it often enough.

She must have attention deficit something or other. She darts around like a fruitfly. Some people live their lives putting out fires and are unable to concentrate on the important things. No wonder she doesn't read. Her pattern of behavior is erratic and she seems out of control. Like a hyperactive child. McCain isn't much better. They are one scary pair. ANNA

the U.S. media downplaying the story

I was a bit surprised at the lack of coverage but I think I know why. The big news outlets want this race to continue and make the public believe it is is still a close call. They couldn't "blather" 24/7 if they didn't create drama. And this Palin scandal will affect McCain's dwindling chances and the media is trying to ignore it as best they can.

Strangely, the Troopergate story made it to the front pages of many non-American newspapers on Saturday. Are their readers more interested in the perils of Palin? No, their editors just don't have a vested interest in supressing the story.

That everyone knows about this!

We can't let the mSm and their handlers decide what is and what is not reported...

That is the beauty of the internet!

We can, and should be, our own source for the news that is meant to be out there, making sure that everyone is informed...

Of course Palin is lying through her pit bull teeth!
Of course the mSm are applying the lipstick for her lies!
Politicians are well known for not telling the truth and the mSm are well known for not pointing this blatant fact out...

So do we just sit back and say, "gosh darn them!"? Or do we do something about it and post our own blogs? Or make comments to articles such as this one as well as every article even remotely related to this one?
Go to your local papers' website and post a letter to the editor... Go to every chat room you can think of and post it there too!

If we sit back and do nothing, then we are just as bad and just as responsible for allowing the lies to continue as those like Palin and the mSm are for saying them and not reporting them...

Think about this and then do something!

What I find just as sad, is that I am only the 7th person to write a comment on this article! There should be hundreds if not thousands of comments here on this subject...

My blog is at: http://www.quietbearspeaks.blogspot.com
I put this here to show you that I walk my talk...

Do you?

Thanks for reading...

Either this woman is a pathological liar or the Steve Schmidt (Rove, Atwater..?) GOP campaign machine is feeding her with lines to mouth that are destroying any credibility she might have left.

Rachel Maddow was extremely and visibly PISSED at this halfwit's response to the report, after repeatedly asking rhetorical questions answered by Palin's clips Rachel finally exploded and said "Palin is a LIAR, in broadcasting we are supposed to use other weasel words but the word LIAR for somebody that LIES is appropriate"

Oh Lordy, if the fates would deliver the Alaskan Breeder into the interview chair on Rachel's show...wouldn't that be GREAT television and wouldn't The Snow Queen look the total dumbass hick that she really is?
