Is the McCain Campaign Behind the Hate Speech at Rallies?

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 4:01 PM on October 8, 2008.

"It is obviously with tacit approval; and quite probably on the campaign's specific instructions."

Way back in February, Karl Rove heard a growing number of Republicans blasting "Barack Hussein Obama," and warned his fellow Republicans to drop the line. Rove argued it would only perpetuate the notion that Republicans were bigoted, which in turn would hurt the party.

That same week, at an event in Ohio, McCain was introduced by some conservative loud-mouth named Bill Cunningham, who blasted "Barack Hussein Obama." McCain, who was not on stage during Cunningham's harangue, later expressed said he wanted to "disassociate" himself from the remarks. McCain added that he would take responsibility to ensure that similar comments are not repeated at future campaign events.

That was February. This is October:

For the second time in three days, the speaker at a McCain campaign rally used Barack Obama's middle name "Hussein" in a demeaning fashion to ignite the crowd.

Speaking in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Bill Platt, the GOP chair of Lehigh County, twice referred to "Barack Hussein Obama" minutes before John McCain and Sarah Palin were set to take the stage.

On Monday, a local Florida sheriff preceded Palin's speech by declaring: "On Nov. 4, let's leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened."

To be fair, a campaign aide later conceded that this was "inappropriate rhetoric." But the trend nevertheless seems to point in one direction: whipping the angry, far-right Republican base into a frenzy. That includes the increasing frequency of "Hussein" references, but it also includes looking the other way while campaign supporters exclaim "treason!," "terrorist!," and "kill him!" during official rallies.

Josh Marshall, not exactly one for off-the-wall theories, argued the McCain campaign may very well be doing this deliberately: "It is obviously with tacit approval (to believe anything else is to be a dupe at this point); and quite probably on the campaign's specific instructions. Given the regularity of the cries of 'treason' and 'terrorist' and the like, and the frequency with which the screamers seem in oddly convenient proximity to the mics, we should probably be considering the possibly that these folks are campaign plants. It happens all the time. It's just that usually they don't scream out accusations of capital crimes."

Desperation and the Angry Mob: McCain should denounce the lies and threats against Obama

This kind of fear-mongering and hateful speech is unacceptable, no matter why [or when] it is done.

We should all tell John McCain to renounce these statements, tone down his rhetoric, and stop inciting hatred. Progressive Future has a tool on its website that makes it easy to send him this message – you can find it here.

Of course they are Agents Provocateurs. It's a standard technique of provocation of a crowd to push them into extreme action by pushing the boundaries and planting ideas.

The question is who is paying them? No doubt they are Republican operatives, but why are they not pounced upon immediately by the Secret Service? There are cameras everywhere. Take their pictures and track them down.

Remember the "rogue" Secret service guys who didn't follow procedures, and JFK got whacked? What makes me nervous is that there could be a similar situation occurring now. Who would put it past the thugs in power now to flip Secret Service people to their unholy cause?

Sarah Palin is inciting the crowds by telling them that Obama associates with terrorists.

Consequently the crowd responds by calling for killing Obama.

Not too surprising, seeing that McCain and Palin can't run on the issues. What else do they have left to offer, but rabble rousing speeches?

I strongly suggest that everyone should watch "V for Vendetta" once more with special attention to the character played by John Hurt, "High Chancellor Sutliffe" or some similar name. How much resemblance is there between his career and John McCain's? Do ya think?

PBS has a poll

PBS has an online poll posted asking if Sarah Palin is qualified. Apparently the right wing knew about this in advance and are flooding the voting with YES votes.

The poll will be reported on PBS and picked up by mainstream media. It can influence undecided voters in swing states.

Please do two things -- takes 20 seconds.

1) Click on link and vote yourself.

Here's the link:
http://www.pbs.org/now/polls/poll-435.html

2) Then send this to every single Obama-Biden voter you know, and urge them to vote and pass it on.

The last thing we need is PBS saying their viewers think Sarah Palin is qualified.

Right now it's tied 49%-49%

Consider your history: Hitler would anger crowds at rallies, incite them to attack Jews, their homes, their businesses, then smile when his followers would go out into the streets that night and do exactly that. Look at Sarah Palin's face or John McCain's when he is watching her work the crowd, and you see the same look as on Hitler's as the crowds cheered!

Fast forward: These crowds are being incited to action - definitely. Are they using plants? Absolutely! Consider that Obama has campaign offices in every major metro area where they are campaigning actively; that millions of people are putting Obama/Biden stickers on cars and signs on lawns; and that the McCain-Palin crowds believe that this man and those who support him are a threat to this nation! I would not be surprised if soon we see attacks on offices and individuals like those in the mid-1930's in Germany against the Jews.

Expect civil unrest because that is exactly what this party and its current Administration want. They are using McCain and Palin to do their dirty work because they are too ambitious and stupid to realize that they are being used to create a martial law emergency, and most Americans are too ignorant of history to see what is happening until it will be too late. Sen. Sherman noted that this administration threatened martial law over the bailout bill, now their only hope is civil unrest and violence to justify martial law. Nature has not done it for them, and another 9/11 will backfire on them if they try to fabricate something, so all they have left is the campaign of their chosen dupes.

The scary thing is that this will probably work, and I hope that when McCain and Palin finally wake up to what has happened they have a place to hide because Americans will hold them partially responsible! These two should either smarten up (ok, stop laughing!) or be arrested and tried for inciting to civil unrest and violence under the Patriot Act they so strongly support!

so you can bet they'll be a staple of Republican tactics from now until November. If Obama DOES get ellected, he should fully review ALL of our security agencies, including the FBI, CIA, SS, and NSA from top to bottom. All are fascist rat holes that need serious fumigation before he goes ANYWHERE as POTUS.

Wake UP! They're both avoiding the issues. Neither one will rock the gravy boat. They'll both do the corporate lobby's bidding. You don't have to fool all the people all the time. Just enough to get your vote. Look at the bailout,it failed to stem the tide. Now what? We have the power,we're not using it. Vote for alternative candidates, throw the bums out! WE the people can take control back if we work together to foil the monied interests. They'll
stick it to us every time.
Let's stick it to them.

This is more than just a rope-a-dope by McCain. Someone yelled "Kill him," referring to Obama. The FBI should have made arrests. I think the DNC, Congress, and Obama should be pressing charges and calling for full investigations and arrests. If not, it points to deeper corruption. McCain's people, the GOP, and the survivalist movement are infested with flegling domestic terrorists. We better not turn a blind eye. If Obama wins, this isn't going to magically just go away. In this environment, he will be in danger.
