Are Harvard Men Sidelined by Sharia?

Posted by Bean , Lawyers, Guns and Money at 2:02 PM on March 13, 2008.

Harvard has instituted a women-only gym hour to accommodate Muslim women, and conservatives are calling it "discrimination" against Ivy League men.

Michael Graham at the Boston Herald has his panties in a bunch over Harvard's decision to create a women-only hour in the school's gym, so that Muslim women can exercise comfortably and in keeping with the rules of modesty imposed by Sharia. He calls discrimination against those poor Harvard boys who have been sidelined by the school's decision. Woe is them!

Now, here's the thing. I'll admit my ambivalence (to put it mildly) about religious edicts (of ANY faith) that require women's "modesty" while usually allowing men to traipse all over town. But, aside from the fact that we live in a pluralistic society that should accommodate many faiths, using this as an excuse to decry, oh, everything Harvard has ever done to encourage dialogue with Muslim students and world leaders is just bull.

I'm told by a Boston-native that the Herald is beantown's version of the NY Post. Graham certainly proved it today.

I really don't see why these women need the gym to themselves. The dressing rooms are gender-specific, aren't they? The women can work out in whatever garb they choose, so I really don't see how their modesty is being compromised by simply having men in the same building.

if Harvard had banned women from the gym for an hour so that Muslim men could exercise without being exposed to women wearing shorts, there would have been an uproar, and it would have been justified. If fundamentalist Christian women had demanded men-free gym time, so that they don't have to risk their modesty, they would have been laughed at. So it is only right to protest at this decision which accommodates unreasonable religious dictates. If women choose to follow the tenets of Islam (if it is a choice) and avoid a gym full of men, that is their prerogative. The West does not have the duty to accommodate them. Tolerance is one thing, bending over backwards is another. This is bending over backwards. It is *not* the equivalent of offering certain kinds of food or a prayer break.
By the way, now Muslim men will probably demand *their* women-free gym time.

Harvard has 3 gyms not counting the one for the law school. QRAC, MAC, and Hemenway. QRAC is the one this is being done at, and it is the farthest away from the main campus. Also, most all of the dorms have a weight room.

I've never used QRAC myself, but I know that MAC and Hemenway are great facilities.

As a Bostonian, I concur. The Boston Herald is quite conservative and their headlines often smack of tabloid journalism. I avoid that rag altogether. The Boston Globe is by far better.
