Canadian Lawyers Seek to Prosecute Bush, Get Him Banned

Former President George W. Bush’s first post-presidency speech will take place on St. Patrick’s Day — March 17 — in Calgary, Alberta. Although organizers have declined to say if Bush will be paid, he once boasted that he hoped to make “ridiculous” money on the lecture circuit once he leaves office.

But instead of greeting Bush with open arms and (potentially) wads of cash, activists and human rights lawyers in Canada are hoping their government will greet him with handcuffs — or at the very least — bar him entry in to the country. In fact, Vancouver Lawyer Gail Davidson said the government has an obligation under the law to ban Bush from entering Canada because of his role in supporting torture:

Davidson says that because Bush has been “credibly accused” of supporting torture in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Canada has a legal obligation to deny him entry under Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. The law says foreign nationals who have committed war crimes or crimes against humanity, including torture, are “inadmissible” to Canada. “The test isn’t whether the person’s been convicted, but whether there’s reasonable grounds to think that they have been involved,” says Davidson.

Davidson is correct; Bush has been “credibly accused” of supporting torture. Earlier this year, Manfred Nowak, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, urged the U.S. to pursue Bush and Donald Rumsfeld on charges that they authorized torture and other harsh interrogation techniques. Indeed, Bush himself said last year that he was aware of his advisers’ discussions on torture and recently admitted that he personally authorized waterboarding Khalid Sheik Muhammad.

Davidson sent Prime Minister Stephen Harper a letter last month asking that the government “either bar Bush from Canada, prosecute him once he arrives, or have the federal attorney general consent to a private prosecution” but she has yet to receive a response.

If (or when) Bush is granted entry, Calgary activists will be waiting. “We want to give him the welcome that he deserves — which is we want him to go back to the States, or we want him arrested,” says organizer Collette Lemieux. “It’s very important that we keep the pressure up. …We have to make it clear that there’s accountability,” she said.

Davidson’s law firm sought to bring torture charges against Bush during his visit to Vancouver in 2004 but the Canadian government “used a claim of diplomatic immunity” to block them. Nonetheless, Davidson is determined to bring Bush to justice. “It’s now a matter of public record that Bush was in charge of setting up a regime of torture that spanned several parts of the globe and resulted in horrendous injuries and even death. Canada has a duty,” she said.

Digg!

Although I seriously doubt Stephen Harper would allow Bush to be arrested and charged with a crime, perhaps the activists will show up and prevent him from leaving the airport when he lands in Canada.

Or, if he manages to show up to give his little speech, disrupt, heckle, shout down that little treasonous bastard! They won't have the apparatus that Bush had in place to protect him here from the truth of what the American people think of him. No "free speech zones" to protect Bush's ears from hearing the damning truth.

Let. Him. Have. It.

GO CANADA!

Not easy to do. They love everybody. Bush should hear the message and make other plans. They don't want him there and he has no right to disrupt their lives. Why doesn't he visit the UAE and bring his daddy to vist some old friends. ANNA

5 men in nondescript grayish suits jump out and black bag his ass.

They can take him away and interrogate him intensely to their hearts' content.

We need never hear from him again.

Do something!

Take him, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Woo, Gonzales, et al. and put them on a recently dislodged hunk of continental ice from the Arctic.

Then listen to them deny global warming as the iceberg quickly melts out from under them.

Add a few polar bears, that need no protection, for good measure.

Film it too because it will make a great reality show. Call it American Evil. People might actually pay attention.

The only difference tween Bush and a mass murderer--he wears a suit. Bush does. So go Canada, progressively and in the name of justice. Try him, see if he is the mass murderer I believe he is, inciting people to kill in his name.

Well within their rights to arrest Bush

Since one of Bush's torture victims was a Canadian Citizen, they would be well within their rights and morally required to arrest and prosecute Bush. But maybe someone will convince him to go to France. He's much more likely to be arrested there.

A very, very small brightly painted car rolls up

and an impossible number of leering, slobbering clowns pile out. They surround W and his entourage. W is pelted with extra large floppy shoes and he is assaulted with cream pies, seltzer and his own words; in high squeeky voices we hear choruses of "MIssion Accomplished!!! Mission Accomplished!!! Mission Accomplished!!!" and "Is our children learning yet?!! Is our childrem learning yet?!!! Is our children learning yet?!!!" Next the clowns coccon W in silly string, and they start to recite him his Miranda rights: "SHHH, You have the right to remain silent... But wait! This is Canada! He don't need no stinkin'rights! Rights are for left wing pussies!" Then a very small clown carrying a chimp mask and an incredibly large butterfly net vaults out of the very very small car's sun roof unto W's back. The clown slaps the mask over W's head and then nets the ex-prez. Other clowns approach with a gigantic ribbon and bow and tie the whole package up birthday present style. A large sign is then hung around the captive chimps' neck: " Dear Royal Canadian Mounted Police, This is a dangerous monkey! He hurts people and he tells a lot of bad lies! Please put him away forever so that he can not hurt anybody anymore ever, especially children who miss their Moms and Dads killed by stupid wars."
The group then stages a curtain call to the stirring sounds of "God Bless America". They pile back into their very, very small car and go out for ice cream.

Inspired by the comments above.

Sounds like a job for the Cacophony Society.
