On yesterday’s Faith & Freedom, a right-wing radio program hosted at Liberty University, Christian extremist Shawn Akers accused atheists of trying to “finish the job” that Muslims extremists carried out on September 11, 2001.

Akers referred to a lawsuit filed by American Atheists to prevent two beams, welded in the shape of a cross, and pulled from Ground Zero, from being displayed at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

“One religion, or extremists from a particular religion, brought down the twin towers, but the atheists are coming in to finish the job,” Akers claimed, “This perfect cross survived, and people got hope from that. But now, these atheists have come in and literally filed charges to literally bring thing this down.”

The evangelical lawyer added that American Atheists’ lawsuit, which was thrown out in federal court last month, pointed to growing persecution against religious people in the United States.

“We have very successfully gone into an age of religious McCarthyism where we are seeking out religion as a religion to eradicate it in very forthright ways.”
