Behind Sarah Palin's Wacky Pentecostal Faith
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest Belief headlines via email.
The last few weeks have been rather busy for Pentecostal/Charismatic types like Sen. John Ensign (R-NV), Gov. Sarah Palin, and Bishop Thomas Weeks. Ensign alone has seen the headlines monopolized by his paid-off adulterous relationship, and the outing of his political and religious ties to The Family and his dabbling in the do-it-yourself exorcism movement. The senator’s political career, despite his vow to run for reelection, seems suspect.
Then, when you consider the excitement sparked both by Sarah Palin’s exit from the governorship of Alaska (to pursue a higher calling) and the news that Bishop Thomas Weeks has found a new wife after beating and divorcing Juanita Bynum, one might surmise that Pentecostals and Charismatics are primed to take over Howard Sterns’ title as “King(s) of All Media.”
Given the avalanche of media attention on these Pentecostal and Charismatic “newsmakers,” one might expect to find more helpful information on the movement(s) to which all three belong. After all, understanding their affiliations and beliefs can help to make sense of the motivations of such disparate figures; to say nothing of the prosperity purveyors like Creflo Dollar, Paula White, and Joel Osteen who share their tradition to some extent. When God is like “on-demand cable”—standing by to provide instant forgiveness and prosperity—it is very hard to convince the most fervent believers to adhere to basic rules of propriety, let alone values.
From a Senate investigation of prosperity ministers to Sarah Palin’s New Apostolic Reformation movement connections, Pentecostalism and its progeny (Charismatic, Third Wave, Full Gospel and non-denominational churches) have multiplied rapidly, making it is difficult to discern what the original movement is and where the offshoots are. Consider, for example, the fact that most people are unaware that Joel Osteen’s Father, John Osteen, was originally a Southern Baptist who turned Charismatic then Word of Faith (the old name for prosperity gospel). There is a reason why Joel Osteen can teach “Your best Life now”—he’s a word of Faith/prosperity guy who’s toned down the rhetoric for broader consumption.
Health and Wealth
Genealogy is important. So, in order to help you distinguish one movement from another, let me give you a brief primer on Pentecostalism and its two mutations: Prosperity Gospel and the New Apostolic movement.
The Pentecostal movement has been defined by historical, theological, and sociological means, but to understand its “mutations,” focusing on the movement’s practices is key. The Pentecostal emphasis on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which can also function as a religious practice, are outlined in various New Testament texts (including I Corinthians 12-8-10, I Corinthians 12:28, and Romans 12:3-8). These gifts, or practices, include healings, exorcism, speaking and interpretation of tongues, words of wisdom, and prophetic utterances. Speaking in tongues or glossolialia, once touted as the primary practice of Pentecostals is now, despite the occasional outburst of televangelists, something very few Pentecostals engage in according to a 2006 Pew survey. Instead, practices of healing, faith, and exorcism have gained primacy among the “spiritual gifts.” As a result, the long-term health and strength of Prosperity Gospel and the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) rests on the elevation and promotion of these practices above all others. The deviations, then, are just as important in understanding how Pentecostalism is being reshaped and redefined.

Ashcroft lied about who the terrorist were on 911 (some found alive by the FBI who said it wasn't them).
He cost us in Democratic cites big bucks paying for "false terrorists alerts" (admitted as so by Tom Ridge).
Tom Ridge himself lied about the terrorism and told us to duct tape our windows, etc. against bioterrorism. It never occurred but Home Depot made a lot of money. Tom when he left his office was given a directorship on the board of Home Depot.
How many citizens died an early death or had a heart attack with this type of stress? Heartbreak over the actions of their government?
This was worse than yelling fire in a crowded room. They weren't held accountable but like most in the government left office with their bag of pillage. They will be back somewhere in our government since these "sucker oners" never find such cushy jobs and money.
Obama says we should move on and not dwell on the past "mistakes". It wasn't just a lack of judgement but criminal in every respect.

This is extremely disturbing, not to mention frightening…with an emphasis on the word "extreme".
Unfortunately, for too many years, the more rational and sane-minded have regarded these zealots to be little more than harmless fanatics who could be ignored. Meanwhile these zombies have been quietly infecting our society, gathering the brain-dead to be their "armies of the faithful" and raising vast sums of money, via their televangelists. "Religion" has become a very profitable business, indeed, thanks to all the "love donations" that come pouring in from people who, frequently, can ill afford them.
Our government has always been in bed with these hypocrites. For example: how many times did Billy Graham "advise" presidents? Now that the old bastard is gone, his son has moved right in to take over the family business…and business is GREAT! And: why have "religious" institutions always received a free-pass through their tax-exempt statuses?
I think that some people are FINALLY starting to realize that these "religious" fascists are no laughing matter and are, in fact, VERY dangerous and determined to bring the U.S. totally under their control.
We can NEVER let this happen!
It is time to react to this destructive trend and to stamp it out before…like the mythical hydra…it grows too many poisonous heads to be controlled.
Expose these parasites whenever possible. Mock and ridicule them aggressively wherever they appear. Challenge them whenever you confront them. Quit allowing them to corrupt our society with their infantile myths and hollow promises. Drive these fools back underground where they belong.
Better yet: drive these superstitious fossils to the extinction they richly deserve!

But never mind all that. Actually I kind of admire the evangelical charlatans who suck money from the pockets of the gullible and ignorant like human Hoovers. You have to admire world-class larceny when you see it. That's what makes religion the marvelous institution it has become.

She didn't do very well in politics so she is changing to religion and propably becoming a fierce preacher whose main song is going to be abortion and abstinence and her reward will be a lot of money.
So much of her is just messed up talk, I doubt her true devotion to religion.
Too much talk but no action.

In her essay "Life and Peace," for example, Juli Loesch describes her attendance at a Holly Near concert to benefit a local antinuclear group. She encounters literature tables for Native American folkwa vs, Save the Whales, Ban the Bomb. Peace. Humanity. Abortion.
"ABORTION?" she writes. "It was as if I’d been handed a flowered note that contained a death threat. My hands went cold. I went back to my seat, my heart clogged. The irony was that I’d come to oppose abortion as a direct result of my own antinuclear activism."
Loesch writes that when she spoke out against abortion at an antinuclear gathering, she:
"...tried to present a meticulous secular case against abortion. I marshalled all the scientific evidence...I followed it up with the most basic principle found in every human ethical system...do not do to others what you would not like done to you.
"This was rewarded by a brief silence, which was broken by a single question:
‘Are you a Catholic?’
‘Am I a Catholic? That has nothing to do with...’
‘So you ARE a Catholic?’
‘Yes, but...’
‘Well, then. You’re imposing your religious beliefs...’
"And, therefore, I suppose, I lose."
I made a similar point in an interview with Abolitionist-Online in Australia. To argue (as some Christians do) that animal rights and vegetarianism are solely "Jewish" concerns is kind of like saying, "It's only wrong to own a slave if you're a Quaker." No. Suffering and injustice concern us all. Moral absolutes apply to everyone--including atheists and agnostics.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is 1.6 million strong (larger than any pro-life group), but try and discuss animal rights and vegetarianism with Christians apart from religion (since we're not trying to "convert" them to another religion--we just want them to stop being cruel to animals) and all they can think of is the MOVE !
I encounter "Christians," who, rather than answer the simple question: "Is it ethical to do to other animals what we would never do to other human beings?", focus on things like my religious identity, whether we worship in "churches" or "temples," whether or not we have to "work" for our salvation, whether we refer to sinners as "dogs" or use half a dozen different animal words, etc. These have nothing to do with the issue at hand!
Absolute truths apply to everyone; only a bigot would see them as sectarian. Hitler, for example, made the mistake of thinking Albert Einstein's scientific discoveries were merely "Jewish science" and therefore not applicable to gentiles. (In this case, perhaps it's fortunate that Hitler had such a bigoted mentality, or the Nazis might have gotten the bomb before us!)
Some Christians understand this. When I pointed out to Catholic pro-lifer Jim Frey of Berkeley Pro-Life that animal rights and vegetarianism apply to everyone, including atheists and agnostics, he said, "Just like with abortion."
Usually, it's the right which obsesses over one's religious identity--not the Left. Again, Sarah Palin's religious identity and beliefs should be completely irrelevant in the secular, political arena. It's possible to discuss politics without bringing religion into it. Let's just focus on the issues at hand.

The Jesus wealth movement is first built around preachers who like lots of wealth, and second around politicians who could care less for "Thou shalt not steal". Best guess, Governor Palin left her Governor's job early as a way of deflecting state prosecution for embezzling $100,000 of state funds to fly her kids all over the place for free. Or was it about illegally exacting personal revenge against a state trooper? Or was it something else in the closet?
Finally the churches have millions of converts. These are pretty honest souls. They want to get ahead, like everyone. If they have a fault it's gullibility for a pious grifter. In fact, the Bernie Madoffs of the world regularly work these people over -- easiest millions that they ever made.

Some well-known viral memes of the past were Stalinism, the Pol Pot regime, the Nazis, etc. They were mostly political forms of viral memes that eventually killed their hosts.
In addition, we have viral religious memes. Let's see: the Inquisition, the Crusades, Catholicism, Scientology, and the umpteen splinter Protestant memes. You can see how the viral meme killed its hosts in Guyana (Jim Jones) and Applewhite's UFO cult group.
It's quite unfortunate that the US has a foundational legacy of tolerance for cults, religious zealots and viral religious memes of other sorts. Unfortunate, in that they're given credence and allowed to flourish.
Given that the vast majority of the US's population is on meds or alcoholic, is concerned with their home budget (due to CEOs destroying the economy), are trying to raise kids, have less than a college education, and already have been immersed in a religion, they are unaware of religion's power and control over their critical thinking faculties.
Religion - in general - is designed to impair your ability to think critically. That's because they tell you to believe rather than think. An extremely large number of Americans have no problem having someone telling them what to do because of the meds, their lack of critical thinking skills, and their need to be led by authority figures. Thus, they don't realize they're being duped by those who have succumbed to the viral meme - which is going to damage its hosts until they're no longer capable of discerning reality from the fantasy that the meme provides.
Oh, how humans can be duped.

So praying to a saint is idol worship but preaching to a Demon is not? You're not only conceding their existence, but their Status.
although diametrically opposed in methods- the intended purpose is the same- 'Salvation'.So there is essentiallly no difference in whether you pray to a Saint to give strength or berate a demon to release you from it's grip, is irrelevant. Both Saint and Demon then possess equal powers over human behavior and fate. 'Let in the Holy spirit' or Drive out the Devil. You must interact with them to invoke them or repell them.
What is most intriguing is the fact the Protestants didn't originally practice exorcism. That's a Catholic Ritual. Protestants rejected the idea of 'lesser Gods', thus the effects of 'lesser Devils'ah? Jews of course discount any other entity beyond the Scope of God's. God is the One and Only One protector, judge and punisher.
So it seems these sects are far more akin to Old Catholic traditions than Protestant.
Let's be honest Hagee Doesn't hate the Vatican, he envies it.
When will they nominate their own 'Saints' who 'waged war against the demons and the damned'? If they started a 'Hall of Fame' for Evangelicals- have no doubt these preaching posers would be vying for induction.
These 'demons' are no less contradictory to monotheism than believing in Sun Gods, trolls or wood nymphs.
So Catholism becomes the religion of the Saints and blessings, while the Protestant get linked with the demons and their torment. Are they sure they want that. It makes being a Catholic seem so much more ....pleasant. How Strange.

Never discussed in the corporate media, are the consequences of the collapse of capitalism. Never discussed is the destruction of public education, public health, "living wage" jobs, etc. that we all need to survive. These are all being destroyed by the hundreds of billions looting the economy for unending phoney wars on "terrorism". And now the trillions to Wall Street, banks, a bottomless "black hole" of unaccounted looting.
This run-amok gangster capitalism has collapsed. Capitalism cannot be "reformed" or "bailed out in any way that will restore economic health to working people and to society. Don't you ever wonder why Rupert Murdoch supported Obama?
The complete bankruptcy of "progressive" politics is now painfully evident. With the election of Obama and complete Democratic Party control of Congress. we have a continuation of all the Bush-Cheney wars, corrupt conomic looting of the economy, increasing unemployment and impoverishment of millions, continued destruction of the global environment, etc.

The way we throw around the terms 'ethics,' 'values.' and family values' without defining why we believe, or what we believe, is definitely anti-intellectual. When people say we in America are 'dumbing down' I guess this is a symptom.

And even at an elementary level of learning the Gospels, Jesus tells his followers that materialism is NOT the way to go. "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and give to God what is Gods"
These right wing mega Churches are just like today's republicans. All that they are concerned about is wealth and power. Not one of them tries to follow Jesus' model, especially about helping the least fortunate among us.

It is my hope that, someday before it's too late, we stop paying homage out of fear to destructive superstitions, and instead start paying more attention to the needs of our common humanity.
Remember – no matter what ANY religion tries to tell us, when it comes to the afterlife and the spiritual realm, every single religion is GUESSING. NOBODY who knows the truth ever comes back to tell the tale.

Never mind that those of the Pentecostal groups are amongst the most giving and salt of the earth people I have ever met. Unlike those who expect the government to help people, like on demand cable, the Pentecostals are there helping without even being asked.
While I am not Pentecostal I know many who are, and feel blessed. So what are YOU doing to help those in need? Just talk? Or are you yourself actually doing something?
In the 80's the weekly Catholic prayer groups I attended was charasmatic, and its still active.
And since MOST pentocastal churchs are African American I consider this slam on the faith to be racist.

They also suggest that one go apologise to those whom one has wronged. This is not groveling, but rather the mark of a sincere commitment to change. This "C Street" permission to do anything you want because you're one of God's chosen, or the "dump the wife you were beating" and just find a new one that think's you walk on water violates all the Laws of Karma that run through every one of the world's major religious traditions - you will reap as you have sown would be the phrase with which most of us are familiar. There is no free ride, and no "Get out of Jail Free" card in life. We're not doomed by our past actions, but neither are they without consequences.
Grow up Right Wing Religious Adherents. Read the Jesus' teachings - the man you purport to follow. They speak of redemption, but they don't speak of irresponsibility. Only children get to be children ... so Grow up.

Caesar gets their votes, but Jesus is sure handy for fundraising.
But then, the pope doesn't have it too bad, either. What's a popemobile cost? All the while those faithful are told to "lay up their treasures in heaven" the catholic church stores theirs in the Vatican, hoping that the latest sex scandal won't deplete its wealth too much.
It's all hypocrisy in the name of the Lord. The "faithful" are worshipping the golden calf and calling it Jesus. It would be hysterically funny if it weren't so pervasive.

the dualistic, 'rah-rah' is applied to every facet of their "American Exceptionalism'-fueled culture.
"American" is just another brandname, meaning almost nothing, but used & applied with the same feverish "Manifest Destiny wide-eyed fanaticism as the religions they invent.

Now, seriously, there is a good reason few of these certifiably insane people no longer "speak in tongues": they've finally figured out that it immediately stamps them with a label for what they are: dangerous lunatics.

Perspective.
