Could Dick Cheney Go to Prison?

By Ray McGovern, Consortium News. Posted July 18, 2009.

Cheney seems to fear that if our system of justice works, he could be in for some serious, uncommuted jail time.

So far, the summer has been mild in the Washington area. But for former Vice President Dick Cheney, the temperature is well over 100 degrees. He is sweating profusely, and it is becoming increasingly clear why.

Cheney has broken openly with former President George W. Bush on one issue of transcendent importance -- to Cheney. For whatever reason, Bush decided not to hand out blanket pardons before they both rode off into the sunset.

Cheney has complained bitterly that his former chief of staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby should have been pardoned, rather than simply having his jail sentence commuted.

Cheney told the media that Bush left Libby "sort of hanging in the wind" by refusing to issue a pardon before leaving office. Libby had been convicted of perjury, obstruction of justice and lying to federal agents investigating the leak of a former CIA operations officer's identity.

"I believe firmly that Scooter was unjustly accused and prosecuted and deserved a pardon, and the president disagreed with that," Cheney said. He would disclose no details of his efforts to lobby Bush on Libby's behalf, saying they would be "best left to history."

It is getting close to history time. You do not need to be a crackerjack analyst to understand that Cheney is feeling betrayed -- that he is thinking not of Libby, but of himself, and fearing that, if our system of justice works, he could be in for some serious, uncommuted jail time.

His situation has grown pathetic. Aside from the man himself, it has fallen almost solely to faithful daughter, Liz, to defend her dad and to start a political backfire to keep him out of prison. She is to be admired for her faithfulness. In the process, though, she has unwittingly given much away.

Liz Cheney on the Offensive

On Washington Times' "America's Morning News" radio program Monday, Liz Cheney acted again as designated hitter, responding to the recent New York Times report that her father had given "direct orders" to the CIA to withhold "information about a secret counterterrorism program for eight years."

Not for the first time, Liz Cheney disclosed what has her father so worried and agitated. She said he is "very angry" over recent press reports that Attorney General Eric Holder may be about to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate "the Bush administration's brutal interrogation practices."

She branded this "shameful" -- worse still, "un-American." Not the interrogation practices, mind you, but the notion that her father should be held to account for them.

Typically, she did well in sticking closely to her talking points, arguing that the issue is "somebody taking office and then starting to prosecute people who carried out policies that they disagreed with, you know, in the previous administration."

As if unprecedented decisions to torture, in violation of international law and the War Crimes Act of 1996, can be accurately described as "policies" over which there can be honest disagreement. This is about crimes, not "policies."

Pulling out all the stops, Liz Cheney worried aloud about what this does to "morale at the CIA," where the practitioners of what Bush called "an alternative set of procedures" for interrogation believed they were acting with the blessing of the Justice Department. (Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity addressed that bromide frontally on April 29, 2009, in a memorandum to our new president.)

Liz Cheney went on to argue that this could, in the future, inhibit CIA functionaries from various actions out of fear of criminal liability. (To me, that sounds like a distinct plus.)

The Decider

What has pretty much escaped notice in the Fawning Corporate Media (FCM) is that the former vice president has also reminded us all that President Bush was the "decider."

That unusual word sounded quite macho as Bush strutted about reminding us often that he was also commander in chief. But now, it could be the kiss of death -- for Bush, as well as for Dick Cheney.

I'll personally suck a bag of d*ck if it happens. There ya go universe, prove me wrong. Please.

All kidding aside, guys like Dick Cheney don't go to prison. Even if he were by some direct divine intervention (and keep in mind you're reading the words of an Atheist) he would merely use his cronies and contacts to 'die' and disappear to live off the millions of dollars he's gotten from all those Haliburton* deferred stock options he has from the public eye no doubt after being pardoned or acquitted by whatever sitting President was in power at the time.

* Haliburton was at around $13.10 a share on December 31st 2001. By 2006 it was over $40 a share and had split twice.

Cheney & Paul Wellstone

As the sleeping media, public and democrats yawn, stretch and blink their way toward possible awakening, more and more people are learning that the White House Iraq Group, from Rove to Libby, in concert with the U.S. President, Vice-President and Secretary of Defense, marketed a lie about the need for a U.S. invasion of Iraq that has had a deadly effect. Even the New York Times was willing to report that Libby, now sanctioned and soon to be tried for his cover-up of the CIA leak, first learned about the outing of Joseph Wilson’s wife from none other than his boss, Dick Cheney.

Cheney. The man in command on 9/11. (This includes his being in charge of multiple war games and terror drills that he had scheduled on 9/11). Cheney, the entrepreneur whose Halliburton stock options rose over three thousand percent by September of 2005. Cheney, who as CEO of Halliburton, made an executive decision to acquire the W.R. Grace Company. In February 7, 2005, this company received a multi-count criminal indictment against officials, charging them with withholding numerous studies spelling out the dangers that asbestos posed to its customers. (Asbestos disease will be responsible for the disability and death of thousands of people for most of the rest of the 21st century.)

If investigations are now underway that include the objective of finding out that Cheney may be responsible, directly or indirectly, for the many deaths that stem from his powerful influence, why not investigate his equally likely involvement in the death of Senator Paul Wellstone? Wellstone, perhaps more than any other single entity, stood in the way of Cheney and company’s agenda. As the only senator running for office to speak against the Iraq war resolution, his popularity went up after his powerful speech on the Senate floor. An almost guaranteed victory would have given the Democrats control of the Senate maybe courage to do something with it. He had Halliburton up against the ropes and would have prevented its incredible war profits. He was even a key figure in the suits against W.R.Grace.

If we are hoping for an important investigation that will lead to a more complete wake-up of the media, the public and the democrats, I am afraid the CIA leak case will not hold a candle to what would emerge from an authentic investigation of Senator Wellstone’s death. A strong prima facie case has already been made that offers starting points for such an investigation in my book, American Assassination: The Strange Death of Senator Paul Wellstone. An investigation of the issues and questions identified in this book might actually result in the kind of revolution needed to finally stop the downward spiral of democracy and health and environment. We owe such an investigation to all Americans. We owe it to Senator Paul Wellstone. The assassination of one of our own may just be the last straw for the sleepy American public.

As you have seen, the torture issue has died away.
The issues with him telling the CIA to not tell Congress of its actions is in the throes of death.
And the wiretapping issues are long gone.
None of this will put Cheney in prison.

But what will put him there is his complicity in 9/11.
For some reason, the media will not go there.
There is piles of evidence of complicity of the government, plenty of contradictions, impossibilities, and improbabilities in the official story of 9/11. But Alternet and the rest of the media refuse to present ANY of that information.
Why?
I think it is because there are groups, like "Q" at the NSA, and some pro Israel groups, that put pressure on the media. Some pressure may come from the foundational support of sites like Alternet, some of them connected to pro Israel groups and big Kissinger international corporate power, all of which gained with 9/11.

We have wasted a lot of time yapping about
Cheney on issues which will go nowhere.
Let's start presenting the proof of complicity in the attacks of 9/11 and get him on something that will never die once presented.

CHENEY SPILLED THE BEANS

One rather hopeful by-product of Cheney's campaign to rewrite recent history is that he has publicly admitted authorizing war crimes. His line is that "they worked." As always, the facts suggest that Cheney is lying about that but, much more important, it is not relevant. Try this: "You are accused in planning the genocidal murder of six million Jews." Defendant: "But it worked!"

The ends cannot decriminalize the means. Someone should explain that to Dick Cheney, in case he has to assist in his own defense.

Many in the 9/11 "Truth" movement think Cheney was in charge on 9/11.

But Jane Mayer's book, The Dark Side: How the War on Terror Turned Into a War on American Ideals, strongly suggests otherwise.

It turns out Cheney was in a panic after 9/11--a fact which makes no sense in any version of the 9/11 "inside job" theory:

"Officials who worked in the White House and other sensitive posts with access to raw intelligence files during the fall of 2001 say it is nearly impossible to exaggerate the sense of mortal and existential danger that dominated the thinking of the upper rungs of the Bush Administration during those months."

"They thought they were going to get hit again. They convinced themselves that they were facing a ticking time bomb," recalled Roger Cressey, who then headed what was known as the Terrorist Threats Sub-Group of the National Security Council....

A sense of constant danger followed Cheney everywhere. When he commuted to his White House office from the vice presidential residence, he was chauffeured in an armored motorcade that varied its route to foil possible attackers. On the backseat behind Cheney rested a duffel bag stocked with a gas mask and a biochemical survival suit. Rarely did he travel without a medical doctor in tow....

"I don't know him anymore." In the view of some detractors, such as Lawrence Wilkerson, the chief of staff to former Secretary of State Colin Powell, "Cheney was traumatized by 9/11. The poor guy became paranoid."

There you have it. If Cheney had planned 9/11--or even if he'd known about the imminent attacks--he would not have been in a panic. And it seems unlikely he would pretend to be terrified. More smoking-gun evidence that 9/11 was not an inside job.

The 9/11 "Truthers" will respond to this information as they always do--by ignoring it. ;)

Here's something that's been bugging me. According to the Constitution, the vice-President has only two responsibilities:

1. Breaking a tie vote in the Senate.

2. Assuming the duties as chief-executive should the president die or become mentally incapacitated.

While there is little doubt that historians will be debating the mental capacities of George W. Bush for generations to come, the question is just begging to be asked:

Who (or what) gave Dick Cheney the authority to order the CIA to do (or not do) anything? What's wrong with this picture?

If these reports are true, Cheney was acting way beyond his constitutional authority. Questions abound: Why didn't the spooks at Langley headquarters tell the Veep to go stuff himself? Why didn't the CIA lodge a complaint with the President? Or did they? Who was really in charge of that administration? Is our children learning? Are these latest revelations merely the tip of the proverbial iceberg?

The answer to that last question is, undoubtedly, yes. When Cheney and Daughter went out on the talk show circuit back in March, there seemed to me to be an air of desperation about them. What is this all about, I wondered aloud. Cheney never gave a damn about the security of the American people! Why this sudden change? What the hell is going on here? Now I know. Now we all know.

As the months transpire and the juicy tidbits of information continue to be made public, the depth of the hole that Cheney has dug for himself will become apparent to all but the most habitual viewers of FOX and Friends. After their "vague plans" were revealed the other day, Dick has apparently taken a vow of silence and has left Liz with the responsibility of "catapulting the propaganda". Poor kid. She has one hell of a task before her. This hole is just too damned deep.

How about the rest of that crooked MISadministration, starting with the criminal and traitor, Cowboy Georgie, who LIED in order to start an illegal war in Iraq, and going all the way through Rice, who went along with the lies and obfuscated the truth whenever possible?

At the time, the lot of them should have been forcibly removed from office, thrown in jail, tried and convicted of treason and, then, lined up against a wall and SHOT!!!

They should STILL be tried, convicted and shot!

(I'd pay good money to see that one!)

were they, perhaps, complicit?

Now tell me which leader said "Impeachment is off the table". Did the voters in that "liberal" district replace her? Is she gonna have a change of mind? And what about the rest? What of those who try to bring it up only to be silenced? And all this despite a strong filibuster proof Democratic majority. Ah but wait. Both the Republicans and most of the Democrats enabled Cheney to do his crimes so what if they're scared to death that he'll take them down as well? It's no wonder Cheney can keep telling America "Go FUCK yourself!"

I may not be able to take back my vote for Obama but I'm ready to vote Independent in 2010. Even on the presidential races, I barely considered voting Obama but now that Obama has shown his true colors as has most of the party, I can't even remotely bring myself to reconsider him. I would prefer someone like Dennis Kucinich primary him by 2012 and replace him. The Democrats are doing one hell of a job working to throw themselves the fuck outta office and by golly they'll get their DEATH WISH come 2010 and beyond !

is a fantasy that would never happen.

The Democrats have come to consider their take down of Richard Nixon to be a mistake because of the decades of crap that the right-wing has spewed on society ever since. Many think that its hardly worth the trouble.

That said, if Cheney were to go to prison it would as likely as not be one of the private prisons that he owns a stake in so they will treat him more as a share holder than a prisoner.

Not a chance of that war criminal and traitor seeing the inside of a cell. Bush didn’t pardon those people in a selfish effort to protect his image. It doesn’t work for me, as he is a sociopath, serial killer by proxy, the head war criminal and traitor.
We have a near lawless for sure Fascist nation. The congress gave a pass to all the communications corporations that were complicit in the hugely wrong spying on every American. Think of the proclamations in recent years. “Impeachment is off the table” “We must look forward not backwards,” that no less by our change savior Obama, “single payer is off the table” and others I’m sure many will recall w/ little thought. Obama has failed to restore any of the liberties taken from us by Bush and in fact seems to have embraced those travesties of justice and freedom. All we get is a little talk and some dancing but I say, “there will be no change.” Elections are stolen or meaningless, the will of the people be damned. It is time for nation wide strikes and to start breaking things.

If the MSM was'nt controlled by the globalists; they would have been reporting these facts that you have outlined. How do we get our country back from these evil control freaks? An organization in New York City, (NYCCAN) has a ballot proposal with over 70,000 signatures, to demand a new (honest) 9/11 investigation. A recent Zogby poll shows that 66% of New Yorkers have doubts about the 9/11 Commission Report. I have many. We need the truth.

Cheney going to prison might be the best thing for the USA, and for the entire world.

It would be the best thing for the Republican party, it would teach them they can't get away with their twisted mindset. Had Nixon gone to jail much or most of this past 28 yrs, since Reagan, would never have happened.

I hope Cheney and a few others would go to jail. No one, absolutely no one is above the law. Not even the Theocons of the Rethug party. Hopefully, the Cons, Neocons and Theocons of the Repub party will, at least, be afraid if Cheney and Bush almost go to prison.

So let the investigations begin!!!

With all the scandals of the Bush era, assassination plots, lies to start wars, outing of CIA agents, etc., one rather clear violation of law seems to have been nearly forgotten. The Bush administration admits, almost proudly, to illegal wiretaps on a massive scale. It is curious that this topic has simply dropped from our consciousness and our discussions.

Why has the Obama administration gone to bat for the former Bush administration? Obama plays a surprisingly active role in defending the Bush team in court and in playing down any discussion of holding Bush lawbreakers to account. Is it possible that Cheney holds some information that Obama would find very embarrassing? Was Cheney spying on Obama and other Democrats? Is this what the FISA violations were all about?

Because they haven't a clue where Iraq and Afghanistan are, and have been subjected to the most Powerful Propaganda to attack This Evil that Resides in Foreign Lands that Hates us so much that they commit attrocities such as 9/11 and 7/7.

We have been programmed to hate these people. People can only know the information they are exposed to, and propaganda is extremely powerful if it comes from Governments, and is continually re-inforced through the TV and The Press.

Even highly intelligent people are still convinced that Muslims trained in Terror Camps in Afghanistan, planned and perpertrated 9/11, despite the overwhelming evidence that it would be impossible for them to have done so.

Last week I saw an excellent documentary made by a Canadian film crew, that exposed the reality of the people we are supposedly at war with in Afghanistan. Using locals, they went behind the lines for "The Enemy" who we are attacking in THEIR Country, to illustrate the kind of people they are. It is completely obvious that these extremely poor and primative people even now haven't a clue where Canada and America are and most have never even heard of George Bush. All they are aware of is invaders from foreign lands - us - Bombing and Killing their Families and Friends. They are merely trying to defend themselves and expell the invaders, which eventually they will succeed at, as they have throughout history. They would have had as much capability or interest at pulling off something as sophisticated and complex as 9/11 as a remote primative tribe in an undiscovered South American jungle.

Meanwhile, the intelligent amongst us, which includes the vast majority of Politicians, Those Working For Intelligence Services, and Journalists who continue to promote these lies, when they know the truth - are as Guilty as Hell.

Evil from the likes of Cheney, Bush, Blair - and now Obama can only survive and flourish, because of those who lie in support of it. I am not blaming your average American or British soldier. They have simply been programmed to be killing machines like soldiers throughout time immemorial. What's different know, is that anyone who really takes the time to investigate for themselves, can see that the evil is coming from us.

We are the invaders. It is us who are committing War Crimes Against Humanity.

Are we such Cowards, that we are going to let this continue? Are we going to allow the Evil within to continue to Flourish like a Cancer destroying our body?

The tumours can still be cut out, and we can still save our body, but only if we have the courage to make a start by putting people such as Bush, Cheney and Blair on Trial for War Crimes Against Humanity.

This kid looks about 10 years old. He's a British soldier, and now he is Dead.

God help us.

Hello mum, this is going to be hard for you to read ...

Tony

perfect place for these crooks. If we want jail for the Bush slimeballs, we must keep on fighting for it. We can't just throw up our hands and give up. Fight for it.

and for that matter his family are all depraved, immoral unethical purveyors of death and destruction. They all belong in the same deep dark prison. Do they have family cells, outside of the US blackops in foreign countries that is?

If Cheney was anywhere close to going to jail, Obama would "pardon" that fat slob. Others have correctly pointed out the criminals in Congress of both parties who enabled Cheney's wrong doing. At this point, you'll have to wait for Cheney to donate his big fat blubber for energy production once he leaves the planet to eternity !

PS: A criminal pardoning a criminal ! Yeah, that's "change you can believe in" !

Just a fast observation, but there should SOON be a number of comfy vacancies in Guantanamo –– more than enough room for all the entire Bush/Cheney Crew. Nice climate, good food, plenty of time for prayer, recreation, intense further questionings & soccer.
And, don't forget, having them all in there will help provide safety & security for Our Country.

If by some fantasmatronic twist of fate the bastard is held accountable for his actions and criminal behavior, I hope he rots in a sewer for the remainder of his days in solitary confinement, only brought out to be waterboarded (cuz it ain't torture, right?). I'm all for compassion and forgiveness and stuff... to those that are repentent. But to the ruthless, I'll give no quarter, only the mercy with which they themselves showed to others.

Obama is not too bright if he doesn't start prosecuting the last 8 years of bankrupt lawlessness... his dedication to the rule of law and the Constitution thus far is NOT giving me much hope.

But that's 'Merkuh's owning class for ya'... parasitic, amoral, lawless and cruel.

Chenney has a many years of very serious heart disease, in fact it should have excluded him from being VP. He is about what 70 years old? He will probably make it to his grave long before he will ever be convicted for his leadership role in his massive violations of our Constitution and law.

REPUGlican, demoCRAP, libertarian or whatever moronic party you want to name, they're ALL friggin' POLITICIANS. Which means:

1) They are self-serving.

2) They are professional liars.

3) They are totally lacking in scruples.

4) Most of them come to politics by way of having been lawyers, first. (Please reread 1 through 3 for an accurate definition of "lawyers"!)

5) Their heads are wedged so far up their asses that they suffer from brain-damage.

A politician should NEVER be allowed to be in charge of ANYTHING.

Unfortunately, all that ever run for public office are losers, like these…so "we" get stuck with really lousy choices: the ol' "lesser of two evils" syndrome.

Want serious change?

Starting at the local level and working on up, vote for a non-politician who is not affiliated with ANY party in every election that comes up…and work hard to help throw every single elected official out of office…

…and then, round the bastards up, tar-and-feather them and ride them the hell out of town on the most splinter-covered rails you can find!

Fact: It's a 2 party system-Improve It by Enforcing Our Federal Laws & Constitution
Posted by: JohnHKennedy Denver CO on Jul 22, 2009 7:42 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
We have to realize we have a two party system and it is not going to change anytime soon.

If we want to cause our political class to legislate in the way we want, WE have to provide our own checks to their bad behavior.

If we do not have the courage to Un-Elect some of them occasionally (including those of our own party), even if the result is the other party winning the seat, than WE are the reason They do not listen to us or legislate for our benefit. They think we have no choice but to continue to re-elect them, even if they ignore us, so that our party (whichever) has power. But power not used for the benefit of the voters will then always be used to the benefit of the rich and connected.

If the elected Federal Representative from our party, (regardless of which party) essentially ignore the general wishes of the rank and file, then the Base of our party (whichever) Needs To Teach Them A Lesson.

We Voters need to tough it out for an election or two and refuse to work for, vote for or donate to their campaigns (even if they win the primary) and do very visibly work against them, making sure they and the public understand the reason why, that the politician in question does not work for the people who elected them.

Only in this way will the voters who elect a particular politician ever be able to control them. There must be a penalty associated with ignoring the people who elected a politician. Voters shouldn't have to repeatedly beg the politician we put in office, for anything reasonable.

The same goes for Presidents and Vice-Presidents who violate Federal Laws (Torture) and our US Constitution.

They Must Be Prosecuted to the fullest extent of the laws or eventually we will have the de facto tyranny that our country's founders rebelled against. We get closer to it with every generation of weak and complacent voters. It is time to fight back.

THIS is about prosecuting the violations of Our Federal Laws by our elected leaders. To that end

This is a no brainer...little Dick Cheney will not even be indicted. IN fact not one of the sociopaths from the Bush administration will be indicted. Eric Holder, Pres O, even my "Democratic" Congressman Ed Perlmutter (Co) is for the return to Federal prison of Don Siegelman but they have no time to prosecute these international criminals. After all, that wouldn't be bipartisan.
Just as Nixon's henchmen returned...and the Iran/Contra thugs played significant roles in the last adm, the cabal of Bush and Cheney will return. Cowardly ninnies (country club Dems) don't take on tough issues like this...AND THEY WON'T.

Because the UN is has some of the lowest standards of competence and integrity in the world. When it was formed they gave 4 out of 5 seats on the Security Council (with veto power) to countries that had killed at least hundreds of thousands of civilians. The SC was of course there to make sure that only those not capable of winning a major aggressive war would be prevented from starting one.

The act of putting Cheney through a inquiry by Attorney General Eric Holder would at least make president the fact that not even the VP can break international law and not be held accountable to some degree. A public display, a tactic used for thousands of years (although he won't be tied to a post, damn), is more effective that one would think . Making his last days miserable here on earth is the least we can do for all who have died as a result of this demented mans obsession with Empire.

Hmm. Dick Cheney vociferously defends Libby; both are members of Bill Kristol's Project for the New American Century; as are Rumsfeld, Bolton, Wolfowitz, and other loons who couldn't get Bill Clinton to do a "Regime Change" in Iraq,so became the Bush Administration. Gonna be a bunch of flying arms as they all try to cover each others' behinds.
