Press Attorney General Eric Holder to Bring Torture Architects to Justice

By Byard Duncan, AlterNet. Posted July 14, 2009.

Demand accountability and help topple ugly Bush precedents.

In spite of President Barack Obama's insistence that the United States "move forward and not backward" on the issue of Bush-era torture policies, Attorney General Eric Holder has recently indicated he may launch an investigation that would call ex-officials to account.

If carried out, Holder's investigation would rupture some toxic political precedents: The intimate relationship that formed between the White House and the Department of Justice during the Bush years would certainly come into question, as would Obama's decidedly non-"change"- oriented approach to detention policies. Perhaps most importantly, Holder's investigation would sanction the criticism and remediation of previous presidents' crimes.

None of this will be easy. Newsweek's Daniel Klaidman notes, launching an investigation "would roil the country, would likely plunge Washington into a new round of partisan warfare, and could even imperil Obama's domestic priorities, including health care and energy reform." It would bring Holder face to face with an array of problematic political conundrums.

It would also require a legal team as adept at logistical and linguistic maneuvering as Bush's gaggle of cronies. Holder has already called on his staff to pick 10 candidates for the prosecutor position -- a position that he said will require "gravitas and grit."

Fortunately, he has hinted that pursuing justice will remain distinct from presidential directives."I hope that whatever decision I make would not have a negative impact on the president's agenda," he told Newsweek. "But that can't be a part of my decision."

Holder has a unique chance here. Not only can he punish some of our country's most odious criminals; he can also make it clear to future offenders that there is nowhere to run.

But he needs to hear from you. Join the American Civil Liberties Union in its campaign to present evidence to Holder. Help deal out justice to Dick Cheney, Jay Bybee and John Yoo. You can do it here.

Here are the rest of our Take Action Campaigns for the week.

II -- Pressure Obama for a Public Option

Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean is among the many in support of a public health option, and he has put together an organization designed to mobilize progressive support. Standwithdrdean.com allows citizens like you to urge policymakers to vote down any health care legislation that doesn't include a public option.

"Legislation rises and falls on whether the American public is allowed to choose a universally available public option or not," Dean argues. Standing with  Dean, who is a physician, means joining nearly 400,000 others who refuse to wallow in the mires of "middle ground" politicking.

Obama's "urge to compromise," Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman notes, "will lead him to negotiate with himself, and give away far too much." It's up to us to see that he doesn't.

III -- Reform Immigration Policies

The U.S.'s immigration policies are tangled, damaging and nonsensical. They shred family ties, cause a whirlpool of wage decreases, deplete the workforce and do nothing to improve national security. Each year, we spend billions of dollars to maintain the broken status quo. It's time for a change.

Obama supports such a change, but only Congress can draft meaningful legislation. It's up to us to make them understand the necessity of reforming immigration policies. Join others at Reform Immigration for America who have already made their voices heard.

IV -- Repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

Among the most thinly veiled examples of institutionalized homophobia in the United States is "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," the military's absurd requirement that gay men and lesbians remain silent about their sexual orientation.

It's outrageous and homophobic to think sexual orientation has some bearing on an individual's ability to perform his/her job. Yet the U.S. continues to maintain this bankrupt policy. Let your representative know that you've had enough. Tell him or her to ditch "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

And the American public will be numb with apathy because they've been conditioned to believe that that there's nothing they can do about it.

and not expect your head to roll when your "game" is found out. Is there any difference?

I am so sick of hearing that "their deeds" were wrong but their intent good.

This last administration blew it all and were willing to do anything to convince the American people that "they" had saved us by twisting the rules. It was all an intent to redirect our concerns over a war being fought in the wrong country for the wrong reasons. Because lo and behold, had they circumvented anything by torturing these prisoners, we would have well known it. Instead, they got bogus info, brought the reputation of the US to shambles and now are acting like macho men who would risk their reputations to break the rules so they could save our asses. (Hopefully, few will buy their immature/risky/cheating logic.)

The rules are the rules for a good reason. If this administration doesn't seek accountability someone else will and it will not be favorable to any of us.....i.e. silence is agreement!!!..unfortunately by all US citizens...and Eric Holder and Obama.

The Democrats have never been held accountable for anything. It has only taken Obama 6 months to turn an economic downturn into an economic disaster.

The white house is falling apart in front of our eyes and Obama is still campaigning, instead of leading; still blaming Bush instead of taking responsibility; still running around the world apologizing for America's success!

The petition on 'Don't ask, don't tell' was impossible to understand. What does 'prefix' mean? It asks the signer to fill in the blue sections ..those are not clear. Please clarify and enable us to join in. Thank you.

Didn't this guy get the memo? Anyone who tries to bring Dick "Satan" Cheney or George "Lucifer" Bush to justice will come down with cancer really fast! There will be an antidote though, it will be verry expensive ...

If Holder is gutsy enough to take these guys on I can only wish him well. This is what many of us have been screaming for. After seven years Americans are still dying everyday in wars that never should have happened. We have it in our power to prevent history from repeating iself. Shouldn't we take advantage of the opportunity. These men are univerally hated, we owe it to ourselves and the rest of the world. We can't continue to shelter them. ANNA

but Obama is in bed with the corporations and the military just like Bush. There is zero incentive for Obama to go after his base, so why should he?

Obama will wait for the heat of the new allegations to die down then he will go back to arguing its all in the past, again.

peace,
Paul

This is why we have elections.
Bush had one policy, Obama has a different policy.
There are good intentions with both. Both seek to protect the United States of America.
If you make policy decisions punishable, every out-going administration will find itself under charges.
This is terrible public policy.

Everyone is hemming and hawing about why it might not be such a great idea to prosecute torturers.

Think of it this way: Could there be a worse crime committed in our name? Even a treasonous act is not done in our name, if we prosecute. The only worse crime I can think of is leading our country into an unjust war.

So if anyone thinks maybe we shouldn't prosecute torturers, remember that you are then becoming the torturer, because it was done in your name.

take action and address the matters of high crimes and misdemeanors of the past eight years.
That this matter is being "floated" in DC and the press is rather telling, somehow...
I went to the DOJ website this morning and called,(email contact not working), letting Mr Holder know that I support a full investigation of any and all instances of malfeasance committed by Bu$hCo. It will not surprise me in the least if some Dems get caught in this matter as well. Tough. It is way past time for the truth to come out.
Laws operate as precedence platforms; the laws crafted by Yoo, Bybee, et al are on the books, and need to be negated, corrected, amended, whatever, asap. These 'laws' are nothing more that a disgusting grab for power and also set the stage for a bonified police state and prison planet. Wake up! take action!

THIS IS IT!

The healthcare reform bill released by the House Of Representatives is an excellent bill as I understand it. It is carefully written, and thoughtfully constructed, informed, prudent and wise.

This is the type of bill that all Americans can feel good about. And this is the type of bill that has the potential to dramatically improve the quality of healthcare for all Americans. Rich, middle class and poor a like. Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and all other party affiliations. This bill has the potential to dramatically improve the quality of life of every American.

The house healthcare bill should be viewed as the minimum GOLD STANDARD by which all other proposed healthcare legislation should be judged. All supporters of true high quality healthcare reform should now place all your support behind this healthcare reform bill released by the United States House Of Representatives, as the minimum Gold standard for healthcare reform in America.

You should all now support this bill with all your might, and all of your unrelenting tenacity. This healthcare bill is a VERY, VERY GOOD! bill for all of the American people. Fight tooth, and nail for every bit of this bill if you have too. Be aggressive, creative, and relentless for this bill.

AND FIGHT!! like your life and the lives of your loved ones depends on it. BECAUSE IT DOES!

SPREAD THE WORD

God Bless You

Jack Smith — Working Class
