After months of relentless news about terrorism, anthrax, war and the hunt for
Osama bin Laden, our national conversation has taken a dramatic shift.
Reflection has superceded our initial grief and anger, as we try to understand
how the nightmare of 9/11 will affect us, our loved ones and our country in the
long term.
To capture the cutting edge of that conversation, AlterNet has released After 9/11: Solutions for a Saner World. The well-rounded
collection of 42 articles untangles the knot of our new post-9/11 landscape,
tackling every subject from civil liberties to Islamic fundamentalism to
economics to sex.
"'After 9/11' answers the once-unanswerable questions and envisions a
once-unimaginable future," says AlterNet's executive editor Don Hazen. "Its
essays provide the context people need to understand how the terrorist attacks
have changed their individual lives and what every one of us can do to prevent
future attacks."
Some of the essays are controversial, like Tamim Ansary's "The Taliban -- An
Afghan American Speaks," which sparked a national debate culminating in the New
York Times Magazine. Others are inspirational, like Bill Moyer's patriotic call
to re-mobilize America's citizenry. Eleven of the essays were written
exclusively for the book, to update the national consciousness since the first
few months after the attacks. The others were carefully selected from the
thousands of articles featured on AlterNet in the months after the terrorist
attacks.
The editors of AlterNet encourage you, our readers, to not only pick up a copy
for your own family, but also to introduce After 9/11 into your communities --
your local bookstores, your churches, your classrooms, your community centers
and wherever else people gather. We do not have a major marketing or
distribution budget, so our best way of reaching more people is you. If we are
to steer the national conversation away from revenge and bloodshed toward
solutions and true security, we will need your help.
